Alot of fanfiction I have read that features D/G as a ship also has Blaise Zabini as Dracos either cousin, friend or ally. whatever he is Dracos friend and through that Ginnys or he is just there. either way It seems that these three characters are often stuck as a trio. (not that I'm complaining)

As much as I like Dracos character he has that ego...that need to feel superior. and Ginny has as I see it the will and determination to be a rebel not just be classified as another weasley if you toss in Blaise, a character who as I see as liking to be in the shadows but very cunning like a snake waiting to strike, combine all three you get a great trio.

I love fics that feature these three as main characters but I was wonering if anyone else has any comments on this.

Yep, me too! Sometimes it only starts with a Blaise/Ginny kind of friendship, then it turned out that Draco knew that these two were meeting each other, got curious and has thrown in the bunch, making them the 'Serpent Trio'!

Honestly, yes, like Jules said, they would make a wonderful gang, and I'll bet they'd be able to support each other too. Draco, being the most angsty, most sarcastic in the trio, Ginny with that fiery attitude, if Draco turns very moody, she'll be able to calm him down. Throwing in Blaise which has full of HUmor, will definitely lighten up the mood of the friendship, and if Ginny goes out of hand, he'll be the one to stop her, since Draco will surely be hesitant in stopping a fiery Weasley.

Nonetheless, I love the three and if I'm creative enough, I'll throw in Pansy Parkinson, honestly, Ginny would be the Lion in the Serpent's LAir, or the Rose among the thorns.

Just my silly and humble opinion

I love fics with Blaise as Draco's cousin or friend too, mostly because they make an interesting duo. Other than that, I think adding Blaise into D/G fics is a technical thing, especially if a writer wants to explore things from the Slytherin POV. Having only Draco is no longer enough if the fic is going to be Slytherin-centric. Moreover, Draco is so flat in canon that to develop him in fics usually means (1) having Ginny see a different side of him in which case the plot usually have D/G right from the start, or (2) having another third party present a different perspective of Draco. I'm inclined toward (2) as it usually paints a more complex picture of a person by contrasting how Draco is in public, and how Draco is when he's with a friend. The layers give Draco's characterisation more realism. That's where Blaise comes in handy.

I'm gonna revive this thread, as I have noticed too that there is a lot of Blaise coming into D/G fics (and I am guilty of this myself).

Nearly every D/G fic I have read has Blaise in it, and usually he is the flirty, humorous one that keeps Draco in check, and manages to befriend Ginny. I think they make a great trio, and I enjoy reading fics about them.

Ah yeah I absolutely adore Blaise. In my head he's really, really, really, fantastically...hot. Everything that Draco is...only even more calm and collected, because he doesn't have to deal with being in love with a fiery redhead. And he's great when he wryly keeps his best friend in check.

To expand on the Alternate Trio idea...I like it when it's a Quartet, and the fourth person is either Luna (paired with Blaise, as in Echo's excellent fic "I Have Never Felt Your Fear") or Pansy "I'm so sexy I sizzle when you touch me" Parkinson. Maybe Quintet is better.

I happen to really love Pansy as a character. Too many people brush her off as the pug-faced cow, but I love to play with her character and make her a friend to Ginny and Draco. I always see her as rather vindictive though, (but that can be fun).

I generally don't use Luna all that much. I like having her in my fics, but a lot of the time she just doesn't fit with where I am going.

I was always guilty in the past of just dismissing Luna...until I read Echo's fics. She's the first writer (in my memory) who I saw use Luna in a really great, unique way. The first fic I started writing (I'm still working on the fourth chapter, sad day) uses Luna in a major way...and I have to admit I sorta pattern her after Echo's version.

Also, so often I see Ginny as good friends with Neville...and I never really got around to appreciating that one.

One fic I really loved that had Luna starring in it as Ginny's friend is one where Draco and Ginny become friends, as do Blaise and Ginny. Luna talks about serpent knickers on the Hogwarts train, but I can't remember the title of it for the life of me.
