What does "Red Herring" mean?

I hear it at times and I heard that many Herons consider H/Hr moments to be "Red Herring."

So, what does it mean since I don't see it in the glossary.
Facade
Red Herring isn't net lingo or such, it's a literary device.

QUOTE
red herring
n 1: any diversion intended to distract attention from the main
          issue

JKR is famous for using red herrings in her stories. An example of a red herring JKR has used is making us think Snape was the bad guy in SS/PS when it really was Quirrel.

You know, i try to stay out of the fight between H/Hr and Hr/R but after the HBP i'm furious. I'm reading sforums here and muggle.net and this Harmony and Heron stuff, where did this come from? Anyone like to give me a background from where this pop up?

A Harmonian is an H/HR shipper.

A Heron is a H/R shipper.

HARry/herMiONEE. Harmony.

HERmione/RON. Heron.

I have not been on h/h fan sites in ages...mostly I just sit at fanfiction.net and read and write about it. But since "The Interview" lol...I have gotten back onto a couple shipper sites. I guess I am just behind on the times but I was just wondering what OTP standed for. I saw it not in the context of being the initials for Order of the Pheonix which I know OotP anyways. Well, can anybody help? I am just feeling really lost. Thanks

Answered question in a PM. Closing this topic. -Sarmi

Not exactly. It is one of the catchalls for those who ship both H/G and R/Hr (carrot-red hair).

Where? Orange Crush is the Fiction Alley Park name for H/G. OBHFW is the catch all for R/Hr & H/G shippers.

Just a tad more thoughts from me . . .

QUOTE(story645)

That's correct--Orange Crush is not the name of the shippers, but the ship itself (at least in the FAP SCUSA registry). However, I've also heard the H/G ship called Chocolate because of something that happened in OotP, I think. So that's where you get the term Chocolatiers. Don't ask me which one to use--I'm certainly not qualified in H/G.

One Big Happy Weasley Family (OBHWF) implies both the H/G ship (Orange Crush) and the R/Hr ship (Good Ship R/H), since that neatly lops everybody into the Weasley family by marriage. H/Hr is of course deeply contradictive of anything of the sort.

As an H/Hr shipper, I find that it's easy to assume (mistakenly) that all H/G shippers are in fact R/Hr shippers and vice versa. Therefore, they are separately distinguished from OBHWF, which does imply both ships simultaneously.

Shock.gif Thanks for the direction. Now I see why You fellow shippers were all so pissed off. Now I am too! SuperAngry.gif If she wants people to keep reading her books, she should learn to be a little more patient with people like us. I know it's her book and all, but that doesn't give her the right to say things like that to people who are paying money for books that are basically her sallery. But we shouldn't be telling her how to wright her book either. Mabye if we shippers just stuck our stories and she sticks to her books, we wouldn't be having this problem now would we?

"Choco" means "A misguided attempt at making something out of nothing, usually perpetrated by unfounded hints of said Something's emergence, usually disguised as proper foreshadowing. Symptoms usually manifest after the appearance of a Gary/Jenny Sue."

JUST KIDDING.

Okay, maybe the joke was half-meant.

Anyway, Chocos are what H+G shippers are called, mainly because Ginny offered Harry chocolate.

Yes. Its roots are profound.

Then again, Harmony, Red Moon, Good Ship, etc., etc. didn't exactly emerge from the minds of scholars, if you know what I mean.

AdamantEve, I think you had it right on that one. A brilliant and accurate assessment. Going in the Harmony Bible. Okay, well, if there's no Harmony Bible, then there should be, anyway.

lol There should be a Harmony Bible but I thought OotP was our bible since it contained many H/Hr moments. Oh well, there are at least a few decent moments in each book.

I wonder who made up all these names for these different ships and how they all became vital and final. The internet has its ways.... tongue.gif

Well, if we already have a bible, then it should be something like "The Anarchist's Cookbook" only, this'll be: "The Militant Shipper's Guide to Piracy: Harmony Edition" or something.

Section X: Definition of Terms

A "Heron" is defined as a "relationship founded on constant bickering and mutual disrespect, differing only from the term 'enemies' (see definition) when the behavioral pattern is mistakenly classified as 'sexual tension' (see definition)."

....

"Enemies" are individuals who appear to loathe one another and mutually endeavor to hurt each other either physically, mentally, emotionally, or magically when they are within close proximity. Usually characterised by either one, or both: a) laughing maniacally in the background (by turns) at the one being hurt; or b ) namecalling (e.g. Mudblood, Nightmare, Scarlet Woman, Teaspoon, Idiot).

....

"Sexual Tension," often unresolved, is defined as "a phenomenon occuring between two people attracted to one another carrying on a heated debate/discussion, as if they were fighting, yet their body language would suggest an obvious desire to stay within each other's personal space. Often characterised by stepping closer to one another to get in each other's face, whispering viciously into each other's ears, and the occasional grabbing, not necessarily on their naughty bits. Must be distinguished from 'fighting' (See definition).

....

"Fighting" is defined as "having a mutual disconnection of ideals and principles and acting on such disconnection either with fisticuffs, magic, or barbed words. Distinguished from 'sexual tension' by the body language of the fighting parties. Where in sexual tension, the disagreeing parties are being drawn to one another, fighting parties draw *away* from one another, often putting a physical object between them to mark the distance (e.g. A kneazle, a book, a bloke's best friend. tongue.gif )

Does anyone know if there is a website that lists all of the ships? Kind of a ships' registry for lack of a better term. Any help would be appreciated.
Hogwarts_Sniper
There was a comprehensive list of all of the major (and a LOT of minor) ships in the HP universe. But that was yonks ago and I have no idea if its still around, let alone where it is. blush.gif
puck_nc
A lot of these terms got cemented when Fiction Alley Park was the only, then biggest forum on the Web. They ship Pumpkin Pie for H/Hr, for example, based on a line in an early, popular one-shot; Harmony came from another forum.

The Harry/Ginny ship was originally and accurately called Orange Crush. After the fifth book, they switched to the very silly and shallow "Chocolate" based on that single interaction full of Ginny not understanding Harry at all.

I still call them Orange Crush myself, when I bother to call them anything at all.

I don't feel stupid, I blame the H/G shippers for having such a stupid ass name for their ship. I thought it meant Cho/Harry too. I was baseing it on being a combination of the two characters names. Like Heron or Harmony. Though, I suppose Cho/Harry would be like Chorr or something. I thought it was weird I never say Henny anywhere, I thought that's what the Harry/Ginny ship should be called. Hey, if it sounds stupid, I don't care, H/G makes me want to poke my eyes out.

~edited to add quote tags. But hey, the other ship names (incl those for PK's ships) sound stupid to other people, too. tongue.gif

Hi, I was just checking through the glossary and I noticed PWP and yeah in its PG13 form it could stand for Plot? What Plot? But I wanted to let you know just in case someone out there comes across this acronym w/o checking the rating of the story and happens to be under adult age, that there is an adult meaning for this PWP that means something totally different in the R/M rated world of fanfiction.

In the R/M rated world of fanfiction PWP stands for p0rn without plot and it is definitely something kids under 18 years old should stay clear of.

That version of PWP doesn't happen much on PK but on other fanfiction sites it does and sometimes the ratings done on them are not updated for content correctly. I've come across some recently but that's ok for me since I'm adult but I wanted to warn kiddos out there to be careful.

I just wanted to put this here in case anyone didn't know about this.

see you later and I hope it helps

Yes, indeed, I feel stupid. sweatdrop.gif I always thought it was Cho/Harry. To tell you the truth, Choco is the last name I'd ever guess HG shippers calling their ship.

Cherry is almost like Charry! This is definitely serendipity at its finest. To think that I'm a newbie here too ... huh.gif
