First off I challenge all of you to say the name of this thread 3 times fast. Maybe even backwards for those of you bold enough. Anyways,
Ricelius and
Mrs.Pepper have proposed to have another type of contest like the Portkey's Reader's Choice we had a while back. This time we'll be judging HP poetry instead of fanfiction.
Here in lies the problem. Most of us are well versed in judging fanfiction but how many of us feel they could judge a poetry contest? Not me, that's for sure. I think Nappa's putting together a seperate thread for this as we speak so most of the information we need will be there soon enough. I'm just wondering if any of us here feel they could help out with the judging here since I fell it'd be a good idea to get at least one Mod behind this. There'll be 4-5 categories, one for each ship and I think there's also one for general non-shippy HP work. They're looking for judges to help weed through those qualified for the contest and those not. Like I said though, I think a PK Mod should be on the panel too, if not just to show that it's supported.
Here's the original thread they brought the idea up in:
http://talk.portkey.org/index.php?showtopi...t=0entry63957 If any of you are interested then get in contact with either Mrs.Pepper or Ricelius. Maybe Nappa will be able to post something here once he's got that other thread done up.

I feel that a Mod as well as an Admin should be on the panel.

Count me in with you, mate. I do not feel confident enough to be able to judge poetry - never done it before. The sheer thought of judging poetry is daunting, for me!
Also, I think that if Portkey is to put our 'official' stamp on this, then we should invite 'celebrity authors' to help in judging this contest.
Linda Mc Cabe, Lori Summers, Romulus Lupin, Ryoko Blue and (our very own mod) Eric, T.C.Geralds amongst others should be some of those on the panel. This would give it a 'substantial feel' as a lot of these suthors are famous in the fandom and would give the winners a rush with their endorsements.
Just my 2 knuts.

Hey guys. My major question about these Poetry Awards is if you know exactly what kind of structure its going to have. Also, if you need any sort of help, I can tell you what worked well, and what we felt needed to be changed for the Portkey Awards.
I haven't really been paying too much attention to this issue, but I am wondering exactly what the level of interest in this subject is? Because it might be necessary to take steps to up the publicity level, as it were.

Hmmm... As far as any sort of panel goes, that's probably a good idea to at least invite those people...Bear in mind though, you probably don't want to make the panel look too imposing, as it were.
Just my thoughts.

Portkey Poetry People's Choice
Portkey Poetry People's Choice
Portkey Poetry People's Choice
weh, that was a tongue twister!
Sorry, I can't volunteer. I have no poetry talents either.
Do they really need a panel? Can they choose the winners by popular voting?

We should ask them first if they want to put their names on it... although I think having the name "Portkey" should be fame enough in itself. I don't know if 'famous' fanfic writers need endorse it further, especially since they write fanfiction and not poetry.
My friend Mandy on here does very nice poetry and I'm sure could lend us some pointers. Let me ask her how to go about this and perhaps we could have her be one of the judges?
What do the rest of you think?

Heaven, Anyone who knows about 'Poetry' would be an asset to this contest. I suggest that you ask your friend, Mandy, to become a judge and help with the organization of this contest, since she would obviously know more about this than we know.

Absolutely, we will have to ask them.

Yeah! I know what you mean, the name "Portkey" would be fame enough in itself, but consider this. If the winner happens to be an unknown, imagine the thrill/rush that the winner would get to have his or her poem endorsed by the likes of those authors.
Also, we've only seen these writer's fanfics; we don't know yet whether they have an appreciation for poetry or not, some might, some might not. - let's ask them and find out, the maximum we'll get is a yes or a no.
I'll talk to innermurk, too, maybe she knows about poetry. She attends literary conferences and the like, so she may be someone who is interested in poetry.

Good to see some comments on this, I'll be sure to pass them on to Ricelius and Mrs.Pepper since I'm pretty sure that they're the ones putting it together. I'll have to see how far they've come. I'll also give them the list of those members mentioned for the judging panel.
As for what darkstar mentioned about drawing more attention to the competition, Nappa agreed to do up a banner like we had for the original People's Choice Awards and eventually a seperate thread will be opened up o nthe main forum like we did last time. I think Nappa's waiting for the input he needed for how the banner should look so that's why we haven't seen it yet.
I completely agree with asking one of our more famous authors to join the panel. Of course, we need to ask them first and of course being able to judge poetry is also a must.

Sounds like good reasoning there and I know that anyone who knows the forum well would be thrilled if they knew she recommended their work. Hell, I'd be willing to put together a filthy HP limiric or 2 if she joins.
EDIT: By the way, the thread is up on the main board. Now we just have to start filling it up with info. I've just sent Ricelius a PM so hopefully I'll have some concrete info soon enough.

It's a good idea, but I dunno, I've always been a fan of letting the work speak for itself... Ryoko and I will rec one another's fics in our own on occasion but otherwise it's all through word of mouth. A lot of people don't even bother reading authors notes these days, and that goes for the ones before and at the end of stories.
I was talking to James and I said I could make some banners or the like for the winners to display wherever they like, I'll even personalize them with whatever they want me to, long as it doesn't require drawing, cause I suck at it

I'll email my friend Mandy and ask if she's interested in doing this and get back to you guys on it

Okay guys, here's an update on innermurk:
I sent her this PM:Do you have any idea of appreciating or judging poetry?
If you do, have a look at the following threads:
http://talk.portkey.org/index.php?showtopi...t=0entry66400http://talk.portkey.org/index.php?showforum=99Perhaps you could help in the organization/judging this contest... I was asked, but the sheer thought of judging poetry intimidates me.
Keith
And got this reply:Keith,
I haven't had any previous experience in judging poetry to reccommend me for anything like this.
However, my sister is a big poetry writer, and I do help her with revisions at times, so I'm not a poetry dunce. (just don't give me a pop quiz, lol)
Anyway, I would be happy to help, if they want me.
Bottom line, she wouldn't mind doing it. Let me know what you guys think

I asked my friend Mandy if she would help judge because she's EXCELLENT with poetry. I PM'ed Mrs. Pepper and Ricelius but I've not gotten a reply from either of them yet, I don't know if they will write back since I gave them Mandy's MB name.

Heaven - Mrs Pepper said they'd love to have Mandy become a judge. But ricelius wonders if it's too early to invite anyone to judge? They also want to know if Mandy wants to join the contest?
Mrs Pepper hopes to do more work on the contest by next week, when she gets a break from RL.

Hi guys,
Mrs. Pepper PM'd me that no one has confirmed to be a judge yet. Quis, she said she &/or ricelius PM'd you and Mandy, but they haven't gotten replies.
Any advice? I can relay them by PM or SMS to Mrs. Pepper.

Oh boy.. I remember getting that PM now. Could of sworn that I responded to it but I guess not. I remember when we were talking with them about how they judging should work and who we should ask. I also recommended a few people we had talked about in here. To the best of my knowledge a few people were asked if they were interested in being judges but I personally only asked one of them. Not sure how the responses were, if any it seems, since I asked them to get in touch with Ricelius or Mrs.Pepper since they were in charge.
I'll put together a PM now and send it to the people we had been recommending. At least we'll know if they had already been asked or not. Worst case scenario is the judging will be a few days later but we'll see.

*edit*
What's the deal on innermurk and Mandy? I was under the impression they were confirmed, as well as ricelius and mrs.pepper. That's 4, how many do they need, they never did say how many they had in mind. Anyways, back to the PM.
*another edit*
I've sent out PM's to Romulus Lupin, Ryoko Blue, ECR Potter, and TC Geralds. I wasn't able to find Linda McCabe or Lori Summers to PM them so I assume they aren't PK members.
As well as the two running the contest and the two people that they've already been in contact with that gives up a possible total of 8 judges, more than enough I'd say. For the time being this is out of my hands. I'll just go let them know I've sent out the PM's.

Hi,
Mrs. Pepper told me days ago that she, ricelius, innermurk, and romulus lupin are in the panel of judges. She didn't say if that was the complete roster. They're presently going over the entries.

ADMIN NOTE: I'm moving this from the Mods' Only forum to the re-designed "Portkey: A History: Poetry Contest" section.
Got a major nostalgia attack upon reading this thread.
I wasn't an admin yet at the time the prev posts were made. Mrs Pepper , ricelius, innermurk and romulus lupin had done a fantastic job!
This,
this and
this threads don't even begin to describe their dedication and hard work. I had often seen Mrs Pepper (Lally) and romulus lupin (Gil) log in at ungodly hours (2 am, 11 pm, etc)** in the hidden forum for judges. You four judges all win top honors as far as I'm concerned!
**I could tell what the time was for them as the three of us live in the same timezone.
