Hi,

Mrs. Pepper and I got the idea that Portkey really needs a contest for HP related poetry, like we have a contest for fanfics. After discussing this in various threads, gal-texter suggested we come up with some guidelines and post them here for you to see.

We've decided to closely mimic the way you did Readers' Choice Awards: authors submit works in a forum, a jury sorts through it all and comes up with some nominations, and finally there's a popular vote on the nominations to declare a winner. Now, we'd like to have at least two categories -- a general and an execrable (purposefully horrible poetry -- see this thread for details). It would be nice to have more categories, but we're not sure how many entries we'll get. At any rate, we'd like to aggressively promote this contest, if it is to be held; would it be possible to get a Portkey banner for it? Another thing is members for the jury -- we need those as well. We've decided on one jury for all categories, and Mrs. Pepper and I would like to be in it. However, we'll only participate in the general and execrable categories, respectively. The contest is meant to encourage people to write poetry, and for those that can't/won't do it conventionally, we have the execrable category. It seems reasonable that only authors will be able to submit their original works and to limit authors to submitting one piece of work per category.

So, what do you think? Would it be possible to accomplish this? We really don't have much experience in this, so we appreciate any help -- and we'll definitely need some mods for creating forums and modifying posts. If you have any comments or suggestions, please tell us. We hope you'll help us with this

Question now is -- how do we promote it ? I mean okay banners -- I knew what to use for the banners in other things.. but ... What am I supposed to do for poetry . PS : I don't have a clue about poetry , so I'm not the best person for this.

Anyway. Judging aside, the first thing I will do is add a new forums and make this section in it. I will make you two the dos who will organise this. You two will work in secret, and when done, you can send me a message, and I will open it up for everyone to see. In the mean time, I will make some banners -- perhaps you guys can send me some small extracts to make the banners. I can't write poems. I tried a long time ago -- it was awful!

I know James is good in this area. Maybe he can be a judge.. ^.^ I dunno ^.^

PS : Is this original HP related poem contest. Or is it SHIPPY related ? or BOTH ?

and is this for Original poems, or for existings ones ( shakespeare , etc.)

We'll work on the extracts... I'm really not that much into poetry either, I just find really terrible poetry rather amusing. I guess I could provide you with a couple of verses

We were thinking about making a category for each ship. However, we're not sure if we'll get enough entries to do this... Hence the aggressive promotion.
Personally, I think it should only be original content -- that is, written by PK members. That's the point of it all -- to get people to write.

I'll ask some of the other Mods if they're interested and have any background or basis for judging poetry. I'm with Nappa when I say that I'm hardly qualified myself. If, however, we want to have a contest of filthy HP limericks than I'm your man!

From what I see you'll have a total of 5 different categories? One for each of the ships we host and one for general HP? I also agree this should only be for Original works only and you should mention that modifying already made works into HP should not be allowed.

Great ideas, Quis! Actually it would be 6 categories -- one for each of the ships, one for general HP, and one for the limericks you talked about. Unless of course we add a limerick category for each ship... However, I think we should go with the 6 categories system.

Oooh! A poetry contest yay! I love poetry, I couldn't write it if my life depended on it, but I'm glad you guys made this contest so now I can read through it. WooHoo!!!

I read this thread a few days ago and was really interested in this idea...

But then I looked around and didn't see any other talk about it.

I would love to be involved if you guys need help or anything, where is this contest taking place?

The contest will be taking place here in the Portkey Forums, much like the Portkey Reader's Choice awards were. Work on the contest has actually started but will be remaining hidden until we've got most of the structure set up. Like ricelius has been telling me, there's plenty of time so we're gonna do this right and not rush it. I keep saying "we" but I should stress that most of the work is being done my ricelius and Mrs. Pepper, sorry if it sounds like I'm stealing some credit guys.

In any case, I'll try to give a progress review when needed so that you guys don't think we've dropped the project. In the meanwhile if you're interested in HP Poetry we've already got a (non-contest) thread in the H/Hr forum. Here's the link:
