What do you mean ? You don't need money to be a member at the site. You don't need to donate to get an account. It's all freee. Donation is for people who can afford to send in money. Nothing else.

Are donations still needed? If you they are I'll see what I can do! ::Imagine::

Donations are still welcome, but we're really hoping to get subscrptions / pledges. People willing to pay a fixed amount everymonth. If we have enough money, then we're more into a new server. But more that that, right now, we're looking for people who have their own sites, that might want to join up and get a server with us. We'll match current prices and specifications. Me and James have made a lot of good connections with webcompanies - but no one gives away a machine free.

BUT we're not moving into a new site till we introduce the new portkey portkey user system. Which is coming soon.

OK - now, a few of us here are from UK, - and not exactly being in US dollars currency - how the heck are we supposed to donate if we would like?
Clearly - one has to be cautious over the internet about credit cards and so on..
what do you you suggest NAPPA?

If you are over 18 - you should be able to have a credit card. If you do, then you can sign up for a paypal account. It's free to send out money. And using that - last time I checked, the british pound was much bigger than the dollar. I did a search on google, and found a currency converter.
10.00 USD United States Dollars = 6.01333 GBP United Kingdom Pounds
That's how much it is. If you want to do the calculations yourselves, then you can check out >>

Hello Admin and staff i have a suggestion for you here.
I have an idea to you can increase the people that Donates money to you.
for everyone that donates money and is a member of Portkey.org.
maybe they could get a sign och a simbol like you mod:s have of some kind.
Maybe that could increase the people so they can donate and the site can grow with faster servers and incresed services for you member and visitors.
Thanks in Advanced.

a monthly donater to the portkey.org and proud of it.

Related Question: I didn't see my tiny little country (Philippines) on the Paypal page. Can Paypal fix that, or is it too much of a bother? My billing address is in the Philippines.
BTW Rodrigo, I edited this thread's title.

Thanks, on behalf of all Portkey-mates, for your regular donations! I'd say that even if I weren't a Mod.

re : Paypal
--------------
Paypal doesn't take money from some of countried near Indonesia. They don't also do business with that region because of fraud issues. However, if you have a credit card, you might be able to donate through Amazon.com -- I will have to set it up so that Heaven gets the money and can send the money to me. ^.^ That is if it's at all possible to do it with Amazon. ^.^ Another might be opening up that cafepress store so people might busy things online, and portkey earns a commision. PP.ORG does that. We might get moving on that front. Again , there info are off the top of my head. ^.^ I need to check them.
re : Sign for the donators

I Have thought about adding something to that affect, and I've seen in some forums they do that. And at first I didn't want to because it might make people feel guilty and feel a little too much is being asked of them. And it wouldn't fit what James and Me had said from the beginning, we would not make people who donate have more features. But I don't think that this is the same. So, I'm making the graphic for it. It will show up on the posts.

That "graphic" is a good idea. But maybe you can give the donor the option to turn off its display? See, some cultures may consider this as "showing off" one's donations. I know some of my countrymen may mind that display.
Just a thought. Or maybe the graphic shouldn't be too ostentatious?

If people do it through the Paypal system, I can ask them their preference. If they do have a member name, and they want to show that they did infact donate, I can edit that field of their profile and show it.
To make it possible to let the group edit their own isn't possible in this forum's software. *sigh* wish we had VB .. well , actually, I do have it thanks to a generous offer, the problem is that the conversion to the new board is rather buggy. Lots of people end up being twice or thrice in the member database... very iky situation... err... I'm getting offtopic. ^.^

And here is is the second bunch .... I will email the people who have already donated to the site, and ask them if they want to show it on their posts. ^.^

Personally, I wouldn't mind donating 5 dollars now and then, especially not if it were as easy as PayPal promises to be. Unfortunately, I've never been able to get PayPal to accept my credit card (the activation code doesn't show up on my statement) so I'm wondering if there's a different way to do it. I'm from neither the U.S. nor Germany (though rather close to Germany). That Amazon thing sounds promising, though, if you can get it to work.

By the way, if you need help in a less monetary way, I offer my services

(I have webmaster and coding experience, though I can't brag about anything near those 100 GB you mentioned)

ricelius: Thanks very much for the offer. I'll keep you in mind if we need help.
RE: Paypal
----
I have two credit cards now. One of them refuses to work with the service - from the same bank. It's just simply not funny. I will see if I can set up the Amazon way. Which is supposed to be semi easy too. But I don't think it has all the convinience. I think it's possible to send the money directly without having to go through credit card verification. I'm sure there is a option for using it with a bank account.

MOD NOTE: Merged this topic, originally titled "A Suggestion" with the "IMPROVING PORTKEY.ORG" one, as they were similar in topic. This was originally in the Off Topic forum, and then I moved it over here to the Administration forum. - Nitya/S.D., 9th Feb 2004Hey y'all,
I'm Calvin Potterson, (a few people may remember my "glory days" on FFN with my Harry Potter/Calvin & Hobbes crossover or the "Mystical Silence" fic I'm writing with nerdypurdy, if not, well, read 'em.

)
Well, it was the link to "DONATIONS" on the portkey.org site that kind of kickstarted this idea (its not mine, I got it thirdhand from a fellow H/Hrer). Why not include a link to the free click and donate charities online (such as www.donationjunction.com) which have sponsors (who normally have adbanners on the site) who pay a cent or two to a cause per click.
Hundreds (thousands?) of HP fans come to this site, (and if this could be coordinated with other HP sites millions); and even if a small portion clicked on the sites it'd be something we could do for a good cause.
Just a thought.
Anyway, this is also my unofficial greeting to all of you H/Hrers out there, as I've visited Portkey loads, but never contributed to any of the discussions. Glad to be here!
