PORTKEY's Trademark Oddness
---------------------------------------------
Yes. Portkey has some really weird things in the way it works. Mostly becuase we've built the system ourselves, and have little to no expereince in running a site like portkey. We've only decently celebrated 1 year anniversary, but really, it's still in infancy.

Oddness One :
-----------------------
You have TWO logins.
One >> Forums & Media Center
Two >> Fan Fiction Section

Oddness Two :
-----------------------
Fan Fiction section has TWO places to login.
One >> http://fanfiction.portkey.org (at the top of the page)
Two >> http://users.portkey.org

---- Why ?
------- (1) : To do , signed reviews and removing reviews from YOUR stories (something soon)
------- (2) : To control your stories ( if you're and author). To maintain your favourite fanfictions listings. Etc.

More to come soonish.
James
I don't consider it to be oddness, and its not due to lack of experience that we have two different user databases rolleyes.gif

Further, I don't consider the logging in at two places bit to be unusual. Logging into a control panel is a matter of security. I could make it so that you are permanantly logged into that as well if I wanted to, I'm just worried that people might accidently leave a computer logged in and then somebody else deletes their story or something.

DAMN! I forgot to mention that reasoning.... you would think that after telling people this about 10 time now, I would remember to put that in ^.^... ^.^

I could get very confused. But I do understand why two logins are needed... well. Sort of.

Well, those reasons seem good enough for me. I don't mind the login process for reviewing. On fanfiction.net, I have over 4 accounts, so I log in a lot, each for a certain genre. It isn't too arduous to login twice. That and, I really like this site. ^^

More info about this "Portkey Oddness". Here's a snip from a chat I had with NAPPA on Apr 12.

NAPPA: hehe - I regret some of the software decisions.
NAPPA: it's strange how hindsight is 20/20
NAPPA: James asked if he should make the forum / fanfiction login same - I said no.
NAPPA: Forced [Thieving] Magpie to use an addon to IPB that was later discontinued.
NAPPA: And [PK fanarts] gallery - the same situation
NAPPA: I should keep my ideas out of the programmers heads.

gal-texter: I do that tongue.gif

NAPPA: hehe
NAPPA: not to this big messy a situation , I'm sure

EXPLANATIONS

IPB = Invision Power Board, PK's board software

The forums/message boards (the screen you're reading right now), fanarts gallery and fanfic recommendations engine ("fic rec-engine") share the same database. The fanfic section has another database of member info, as explained in the older posts on this thread.

This means that if you want to log in the fanfic side, you have to enter your user name and password in there even if you're already logged in the forums.
