I just found this site and after lurking for a while finding the fic recommendation section, I decided to join because I found a wonderful fic but the author never finished it but I'd like somebody to point me in the direction of similar fics. Yet I can't start new threads except for here. What gives?

Hm, I gotta admit I cocked an eyebrow when I saw your thread's title. Surely you're aware that "give me a break" is often meant to be sarcastic? But then, you're new and your other forum post sounded pretty harmless, so I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt. Now if you really were being sarcastic, then that'd reflect badly on you, not on us.

The Fic Recs (recommendations) forum description** says:

New rec threads for specific stories may only be opened through the Fic Recommendation Engine (FIC REC-ENGINE)'s "Add New Recs" function.

** scroll down that page to read it. You could also see it in our board's main page.

There are more explanations on top of each fic category's page, like
this one for Harry/Hermione Fic Recs.

Also, newbies can post in other forums like the shipping sections.

Here in Portkey, we've put plenty of guidelines and FAQs on our pages' margins, esp the top and right ones. We've also put descriptions of each section's purpose. They're like street signs or wall directions to guide people. This site has much to offer, but visitors must do their part in reading all available help docs to make the most out of our content. smile.gif

Now obviously this isn't a typical "welcome to PK" message. You could start fresh by checking for guidelines next time before posting messages -- or sig images, for that matter. We're not as strict as other sites, but we do have a rationale for our rules.

Relax, we're not gonna ban you or suspend your privileges as we're chalking these up to newbie mistakes.

Hey, I cannot fully express how happy I am that you've decided to delurked. Many people do when it comes to Portkey. msn-wink.gif

Pen/gal-texter, one of our Admins, pretty much said what needs to be said so I won't bother repeating them for you. But I guess you rushed posting. It wouldn't hurt if you can just go by the rules (because I think it is pretty clear by this post that you didn't or at least need to go over them again). There are pretty much thousands of URLs thrown around the place for references to our rules. And I believe, if you have any more questions, visiting the FAQ Desk would be of great help.

Nevertheless, welcome to Portkey! happy.gif

Thanks gal. Successfully made my thread. Might want to check it out. There have been other boards that I've been active at that force new members to make like 20 or so posts before they're allowed to make their own threads and I thought that was the deal here but I'm glad I was wrong. When an admin is a dictator like that it really irkes me. Thanks again for the help.

Welcome to PK. I love your username btw. thumbsup.gif I just went to check out the link you gave for your topic/fanfic request.

I have a few questions, since I might be able to recommend a few AU fanfics that you might like.

1. Do you like HP fanfics that bash ron, ginny, molly or Weasleys in general?

2. Do you like HP fanfics that bash dumbledore?

3. Do you like stories that are really AU and sometimes act like books 6 & 7 don't exist?

I'll go over to your other post and give you some links to some fanfics you might like if you answer 'yes' to these questions.

Again, welcome to PK.

Are you saying you actually agree DH sucked? grin.gif

In regards to what you offered in the other thread:
The Real Us didn't keep my interest past the 2nd chapter. Deceit And Lies is a little too absurd for my liking. As much as I don't like Ginny anymore, she's not the bitch that is portrayed in D&L and Dumbledore certainly isn't "evil".

I'm trying to get into Fate's Gambit but I'm really looking for a reworking of the series starting at year 1 like Vicis Vulnus did but I get the feeling those are rare if not nonexistent.

So pretty much the only things that are important to me are rewrites, staying 90% solidified in "Harry Potter world", but most importantly it should really center on Harry/Hermione's relationship. Sorry if that's too specific.

I gotta say, thanks for devoting energy into trying to help me find a Harry/Hermione fic I'll like.

Maybe those admins saw a deluge of trolls or automated registrations in their boards that prompted them to restrict newbies from making their own threads. That was our primary motivation here. I won't reveal what our thresholds are lest the trolls and spammers exploit that, but they're very easy to reach.

Another reason we've restricted "create new topic" options in some of our sub-forums is because members don't bother checking whether what they're posting would would fit where they're posting it. That kind of restriction applies to all non-staff including oldtimers.

Now I had to hide your "recommendation" thread because it doesn't read like a recommendation for me for a SPECIFIC fanfic. We're you talking about "Vicis Vulnus" itself in your comments? Is it the same story you're talking about here:

I just got done reading an unfinished AU(alternate universe) fanfiction where Harry relives his Hogwarts days from the first year with his knowledge/memories that he has from his later years. From what I could gather it was supposed to go throughout the whole series?

If you weren't describing Vicis Vulnus above, OR if you weren't really recommending it, then you'd have to look over the "broad searches" we've got here. Look for criteria that come closest to what you're looking for. Off hand I'd say it's the "canon allies turn mean in fanfic" criterion.

Yes it is.
