PK Spotlight on
Harrys Mistress
IPB Image

We're thrilled to feature one of Portkey's most popular authors, Harrys Mistress, in our third issue. Her stories always draw in plenty of favorable reviews. Her readers have regularly included her tales in our fic recommendations (recs) database. If you click on the thumb-up graphic thumbsup.gif on her forum messages (below her avatar), you'd see that our database has 13 of her stories to date, excluding some sequels or companion tales. Click that image thumbsup.gif every now and then as that recs list gets updated in real time. What's more, those endorsements were initiated by at least eight people and heartily seconded by countless more.

Aside from that, readers have also voted for her stories, "Love Lost. Love Found," "It's Just Pretend" and "Summer Bliss" in three of Portkey's official fic contests. To see which particular PK contests included her fics, please click on the star and trophy graphics (star.gif and contest_winner.gif) below her avatar.

We'd like to thank her again for being so patient with us and for making time to answer our questions despite our shortcomings. sweatdrop.gif We emailed her our prelim questions while she was on vacation in her ranch. She only had her iPhone with her, so she acknowledged getting our email but had to wait until she could use her laptop to type her answers. At any rate, it only took her a couple of days to get back to us.

Our talk with her touched on topics such as her inspirations for her HP stories, as well as her other interests in real life and pop culture. Let's treat this Q&A as an opening for a casual chat in which you, our dear readers, are welcome to participate.

  • Spotlight Team (ST): You've written many HP stories already in different settings and genres. Say, the trio during and after their Hogwarts years; or canon pairings but with alternative endings (such as H/Hr getting married after failed relationships with Ron and Ginny); and even the trio with their kids. Of all the tales you've written, which ones do you like best? Which genres too? Please tell us why.

Harrys Mistress (HM): You know, I’ve never really thought about it. I just usually come up with an idea and run with it. I’ve enjoyed writing all of my different styles for different reasons. I never really start out saying, “I want to right an angsty fic” or “I feel like writing strictly romance.” I just usually write what comes to my mind. I basically just love writing about my favorite ships, H/Hr being my favorite, obviously. The last fic I wrote, Love Lost. Love Found, I found myself really missing writing about R/L and D/G…that’s what made me think of 14 Days and 14 Nights.

  • ST: Your stories have uncomplicated plots in a good way. This makes it easy for readers like me (jediyoda) to follow your plots and to soon become your fan. Do you usually plan to keep your plots fairly simple or have you considered writing "grandiose" stories with complicated plots that would force the reader to really have to think about what your story is all about?
