Full Version: how to develop H/Hr REALISTIC relationship.

Okay. So I'm attempting (key word being attempting) to rewrite DH. I've read a few rewrites that were posted on Portkey for inspiration and I've gathered some ideas as far as plot development goes.

In this experimental fic of mine, I'm going to include from DH the part where Ron bails on H&Hr, because that gives the duo time alone where I'm going to deepen their friendship a LOT!!! happy.gif

-Sometime while Ron is gone I'm going to have Herm apologize for being OOC in HBP, and I'll have Harry acknowledge that he didn't realize how much he missed being close to Herm blah blah blah. This obviously doesn't bring them closer romantically, but I think that it's important for their friendship to deepen before they fall in love.

-Ron is still gone here-> To get rid of Ginny (*evil chuckles to self twisted.gif) I'm gonna make Herm help Harry practice Occlumency, and somehow (although I'm not sure how yet blush.gif lol) Harry's mind will somehow find it's way into Herm's memories. He will see a memory of Herm asking why Ginny loves Harry, and Ginny will give a few romantic reasons and a few shallow reasons why she "loves" Harry. (They can't be all shallow reasons, b/c I don't think that Ginny is as completely shallow as some make her out to be). But this scene is included to give Harry insight on how shallow Ginny Sue's true feelings for him actually are. And that takes care of Ginny. hehehe...

-I don't think I need to put any special effort into ruining Ron and Hermione's "romantic" feelings for each other, since they naturally just seem to annoy the crap outta each other. Herm will just make some statement, somewhere, that Ron is too immature for her. Or something...

-So now that I've destroyed the H/G R/Hr ness and deepened Harry and Hermione's friendship... I need a tad bit of help with figuring out how Harry would realistically develop romantic feelings for Hermione. I mean, I was thinking of having Hermione show up all beautiful and perfect (but not Sue ish) to Bill and Fleur's wedding after the destruction of H/G & R/Hr, and having Harry suddenly show romantic interest in her. But let's face it. That's COMPLETELY not realistic. At all. After all of these years of only seeing Herm as a friend, it would take more than that to have him see our Hermione as a girl he could possibly grow to love romantically. Help???

I just hate fics where all of a sudden one day, Harry decides almost outta nowhere that he is in love with Hermione. Umm...not? So does anyone have any ideas on how to include very, very subtle H/Hr ness? Like maybe scenes I can include? Or does anyone have any suggestions on other ways I could destory the H/G & R/Hr ness? Any ideas at all? I would appreciate it soooo much. Pretty pumpkin pie please???!!! happy.gif

Hi, HarmonyForever08!

I have few suggestion to you.

Let's go. First of all, you can hate a character when you're reading them: when you're writing, the situation is different: you must love them. You never going to make a good villian believable if you do not love it. All characters are important for your plot, even the ones that only appear to say "What time is it?".

Never make them be one thing. That's what happened to Voldermort, for example. He's evil. Period. He's unidemensional e nothing more. JK lost a great opportunity to show Voldermort as a boy that inch by inch is seduced by power. He was evil since he was a little boy. Instead of making him using his powers to intimidate the other kids in the orphanage, she could make him be a shy boy, sometimes scared of what he could do and after goes to Hogwards, he start to modify his personality. The only good thing is that she made him be a lonely boy, what is not good enough because Harry was lonely and and didn't turn evil. Hermione was lonely (even at Hogwards) and doesn't turned evil. Tom Riddle NEVER turned evil. He was evil already. If the idea was to show what can we do about choices, she failed completely. Snape, being multi-dimensional is a character that attracted much more attention than the main villian of the serie.

People have qualities and weakness. So it's H/Hr, let's bash Ron and Ginny. If you want to make it believable don't be simple like this. Harry and Hermione are not perfect. Harry is self-centred and Hermione can be terribly cruel. The beauty is to show all their sides. It's not because they're loved by all of us that they will be right always. They're unfair sometimes.

About the relationships: what's your opinion about them? If H/G and R/Hr are together initially, it has a motive. What motive is it? Hermione was pinning for Ron in HBP. What had made Ron go to Lavender even after be invited by Hermione (his crush) to go to Slug's party? Oh, he's a prat. NO! Never answer like this! Too easy. Read the book and think about all the possibilities. Which character is better, a big prat (unidemensional) or a guy that has lots of inscurity issues, feels too inferior to the girl he likes, doesn't think he's fanciable (Luna was the only girl that showed interest for him and she's weird), he's poor, plain, is an average wizard, has a crush to a girl that's brilliant speaking of inteligence and talent, is pretty, called the best quidditch player's attention and affection (Krum do really liked Hermione), probably comes from a wealthy family (her parents travels a lot and she buys expensive gifts), and see this girl ignore somethings about him, what she doesn't do to his other friend, etc (multi-dimensional)? Which one you prefer?

Ginny suddenly called Harry's attention. There's lots of talk about love potion, but we all know that's only JK making a poor job of showing her (Ginny) as Harry's LI. But suppose a love potion was used, what was the motive? She's obsessed to have /Harry no matter what (unidimensional) or she saw Harry and Cho relationship fail, she could be told by Neville about Harry's emotional reaction to Hermione, she could think about everything they (H/Hr) did together all those years, specially that year, she could see something (a glance, for example) between H/Hr that make her suspect that they can be together... Let's face it: when Ginny made that harsh comment after Malfoy's incident, it could be a jeaulous girl finally find a weakness in her perfect rival. The only thing that she's better than Hermione is quidditch. They played it in the beginning of HBP in the Burrow, remember? So, Ginny can have multi-dimensional traits even if her creator didn't make her like this.

About H/G and R/Hr ending. Well, JK gave already the answer. R/Hr separated in DH and they could never come back. There's affection between them but no understanding and it's not one sided: Hermione is terrible to Ron too. What did he feel when he saw her all worried about Harry during 5th year summer? Or when the way she reacted about perfects badges? She was sure that Harry would be made perfect and got surprised and embarresed when she discovere it was Ron. When she sided Harry in 4th year, after GOF incident. People here tend to put only on Ron's shoulders their failure but he didn't believed, Harry started the fight and Ron saw Hermione goes to Harry's side again. Think for his side too if you want to develop anything about him. When he was made Gryffindor's keeper, the most important thing that pehaps happened to him in Hogwards, Hermione was sleeping during the celebrations. When you're going to make them bicker for anything, try to have it in your mind.

Harry can like Ginny but does not feel nothing more special about her. Do not forget that he was an abused child. He understand crushes as romantic love. Crushes end quickly. He's there, near her, but with his head in his quest. After almost one year, the result is what we saw in DH: he ignored her completely after the battle and let's face it: she wasn't exactly pinning for him (she was with her mother). They're the opposite of R/Hr: they have affinity but no affection.

About H/Hr. The same thing. Think in how they react around each other. Think not only in what Harry likes in Hermione but what he hates too. The same with her. The beauty of them together is that they're able to see about everything in the other. As I said said before, Harry was an abused child. He knows that he feels something very powerful about Hermione but he can't understand what he feels. That's why he translated it as sibling love. There's no "chest monster" with her, but a warm glow. It can be true love. I know that we don't see Harry thinking in how she's pretty but we have him looking at her a lot (OOTP specially). Harry's behavior about Hermione is translated by his reactions and not conscious actions. The same with Hermione but only because the story is in Harry's POV. We have to understand her by the way Harry tells us how she reacted.

I think that's it. I hope I could help you.

^ WOW!

So, ver subtle H/Hr-ness, huh? hmmm..

Maybe you could just highlight or deepen the H/Hr scenes already presented on the book. Or develop their closeness during the Horcrux hunt when Ron isn't with them.

And that scene when they visited the Potters' grave? Maybe you could tweak that into Hermione being super supportive and Harry is this morose broken boy man who leans to her for support. And then gradually deepen everything from there.

I know, what I suggested are not very original but you are looking for subtle hints of H/Hr, right?

So, there. msn-wink.gif

I think some of the best subtle hints of love or devotion to someone is in everyday moments or small little touches that if love wasn't there would be mundane but if it is love then it is monumetal. It is all in the reception of things like that.

Perhaps have him do little things for her and she for him that clue the reader to how much they care but they don't see it in theirself you know?

Sometimes the best evidence for love is in how you live with someone. Like when you get up to get a glass of water or a drink you get one for your love as well. You know what I mean? I hope that made sense lol

maybe Harry could take over a chore or something after realizing that Hermione hates to do it. Maybe after all this time of hermione helping and caring for Harry he finally "gets" it and starts trying to do some things for her and they end up being comical but sweet attempts. smile.gif

Marcella: I see what you're saying about the "love every character" thing. What you're saying is, instead of taking the face value of characters I dislike (and even the ones I do like) and writing them that shallow, then my story will probably lack depth. But if I read into these characters' actions and write them as being multi-dimensional, this will lead to more interesting situations and plots, and they will be more believable. So, I suppose that if I take this approach, the characters will write their stories themselves, kinda?? lol

Hmmm...you gave me a lot of great ideas and things to think about. Guess I'll have to think even more before I write. But wow! You really went out of your way to help me. Thanks a lot!!!! laugh.gif blush.gif happy.gif

cakeandmilk: Yeah, I was thinking about keeping some of the same scenes from the book and "tweaking" them, as you put it. Jack up the romance a bit. And haha I def put a lot of thought into the grave scene. I was thinking about having a supportive!Hermione, too! Lol great minds think alike!!! laugh.gif Thanks for the help!!!! happy.gif

snoopy pie: "I think some of the best subtle hints of love or devotion to someone is in everyday moments or small little touches that if love wasn't there would be mundane but if it is love then it is monumetal. It is all in the reception of things like that."

^^^I totally agree!!! But you know what bugs me?? In the books, Hermione and Harry already share those subtle moments of love, quite frequently, like when she grabs his shoulder or hand, when they lock eye contact, or when Hermione just asks Harry if he wants his toothbrush. Like *awwwwww* (ewww I did not just type "like" disregard the "like" upset.gif ). Anyway... yeah Harry and Hermione always shared tiny little moments like this, while R/Hr and H/G never, EVER did!!! The Harry/Hermione was TOTALLY there, physically, but JK just had to keep the possibility of H/Hr ness out of Harry's consciousness! RAWR!!! If only she had given him a chance to contemplate the possibility of H/Hr ness then mabye he would have read into these little hints of romance. But NOOOOO!!! She had to have her OBHWF!!!! You know what that stands for??? Oafish...err-Boogerey...Hairy, Weasley FUNGI!!!!!!!! Err...yeah!!!! wallbash.gif Sorry I'm losing myself a bit offtopic.gif

Anyway...YESS!!! I'll add lots of fluff!! YAYYYY FLUFF!!!!!!!!!! wub.gif happy.gif lol Thank youuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
