R/Hr may have "anvil sized" hints (yeah right), but we sure do have a heck of a lot of "subtle" hints!

-Love the Hermione saying "Voldemort" moment.
-Any moment of when they're complimenting each other.
-When they're both proud of what they've done.
-Whenever they flirt.
-Jaw drop in GOF.

...many, many more...

Hmm, would Hermione asking Harry to knit with her be a "subtle" moment, because she was disappointed afterwards?

Off-topic: I'm watching COS, and I keep hearing Harry/Dan call out, "Jenny." tongue.gif

After they scape from the centaurs and Grawp... they're arguing and when they hear someone (Ron, actually) and by instict get back by back... Not very obvious, more subtle than anything, but I love it wub.gif

That happens so much in the books, I swear! It'll be that they did something "instinctively" or Harry will do something and Hermione will be right behind him (and vice versa) or Harry will give a knowing look to Hermione (and vice versa) or he'll see something about her that nobody else does (and vice versa) or they'll do/say something "together".

Add to that all their exclusive knowledge/experiences (fighting in the DoM together, the time-turner adventure, "dogging your footsteps", "friendship and bravery", GoF when nobody else believed Harry - too many moments to list, in OoTP - cancelling her vacation to be w/ Harry, etc,).

hexonjellybeans12

Harry gets excited to find out Hermione thinks of him as worthy and Hermione gets excited to find out Harry thinks the same (i.e. convo w/ Sluggy). Coincidence...I think NOT!

I love this thread, well my favorite subtle moment is just not a moment, is more like a conclusion, you see hermione thinks that boys only tihink about is quidditch, you guys remeber Slughorn's christmas party, she says and i quote:

"Quidditch!" said Hermione angrily. "Is that all boys care about? Cormac hasn't asked me one single question about myself, no, I've just been treated to 'A Hundred Great Saves Made by Cormac McLaggen' nonstop ever since.....

She's very furios and anoyed, but still she start to be very interested of what harry is doing with the quidditch team remeber the talk that harry and hermione have over ginny and dean's split: "Of course, this puts you in a bit of a dilemma, doesn't it?" said Hermione. "What d'you mean?" said Harry quickly. "The Quidditch team," said Hermione. "If Ginny and Dean aren't speaking . . ." "Oh — oh yeah," said Harry,, maybe she was trying to show to harry that she knows what she is talking about when it comes to quidditch, and probably ginny notice this to and that's why she says this:

"Oh, don't start acting as though you understand Quidditch," snapped Ginny, "you'll only embarrass yourself."

That scene will live on forever on youtube *sigh*...

Another moment:

The hug in PS/SS when they're 'through the trapdoor", but then when Hermione looks as though she is ready again to fling her arms around Harry, at the end, she doesn't. Now, is this because Harry is sore and tired, or because there are other people aroung... whistling.gif

Or when Harry's about to face Quirrel/Voldemort in PS/SS and Hermione's just said her "you're a great wizard" speech... you can see (at least in the movie) her wanting to kiss (okay, they're only 11!) him.

My friend's brother commented about that. wink.gif

I am really leaning towards Harry saying it... and Hermione crying, possibly saying those 3 little words Harry has never heard and then sharing their first kiss...

Okay, sappy, I know, but JK could write it so beautifully...

That hug (unless you mean the "You're a great wizard" hug, omitted from the PHILOSOPHER'S STONE movie but grafted onto the CHAMBER OF SECRETS movie) isn't in my copies of either Book One or its film version. In the book, however, after Hermione's blue flames free him and Ron from the Devil's Snare (in the movie she and Harry relax their way out of it, then she shoots sunlight at it to free Ron), Harry joins her by the wall (!), saying, "Lucky you pay attention in Herbology, Hermione." He's also wiping sweat off his face, but I'm not sure what that signifies. (In the French version of the book, Harry in this scene says simply, "Lucky you pay attention in class." Any of you francophones have a clue about that?)

I don't know if this was mentioned before, but did u notice that, especially in OotP, when Harry or Hermione arrive in the Common Room they sit next to each other? I don't have the exact quote, cause I don't have the English version, but I noticed that at least 3 times it's mentioned that Harry sits next to Hermione or Hermione next to Harry. JK Rowling could have simply said that Harry sat down, the observation "next to Hermione" seems useless unless she wants to point at something.

Maybe someone could post the exact quotes biggrin.gif

Does anyone think they've identified the first-ever H/H moment in the series? I've got two possible contenders, both, I think, rather subtle.

The first is after Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley, and before his first trip on the Hogwarts Express:

QUOTE
(Bloomsbury/Raincoast edition, p. 67)

Harry kept to his room, with his new owl for company. He had decided to call her Hedwig, a name he had found in A History of Magic. His school books were very interesting. He lay on his bed reading late into the night, Hedwig swooping in and out of the open window as she pleased.

Harry would probably admit that this was a very Hermione-ish thing to do. But has he ever admitted it to anyone, even Hermione? I rather doubt it, and I hope he does tell her about it in Book Seven. Perhaps he sensed that he would meet her or someone like her at Hogwarts?

The other contender happens during the Sorting in that first book:

QUOTE
(p.90)

"Granger, Hermione!"

Hermione almost ran to the stool and pulled the hat eagerly on her head.

"GRYFFINDOR!" shouted the hat. Ron groaned.

A horrible thought struck Harry, as horrible thoughts always do when you're very nervous. What if he wasn't chosen at all? What if he just sat there with the hat over his eyes for ages, until Professor McGonagall jerked it off his head and said there had obviously been a mistake and he'd better get back on the train?

Now why did Harry have to get such a thought right after Hermione's Sorting -- especially since Ron had just groaned in dismay at the realization that she would indeed be in "whatever House I'm in"? Isn't this a rather large hint, early on, about which of them Hermione was destined for?

Didn't Harry also read his books because he thought that being from a Muggle home would put him at a disadvantage? That he might be quite a bit behind? I doubt it was for anyone besides himself.

Again, sorry for being a brat, but Hermione was the first sorted into Gryffindor. The house that sounded good to him and the house that Ron had talked about. Plus, Hermione had mentioned that she wanted to be placed into Gryffindor, so when she was, he was probably just worried he wouldn't be. Also, Harry's had been such an outcast, he was probably afraid of not getting what he wanted. I don't see this as a shippy moment.
mystiquefire
I think this is the 1st shippy moment:
QUOTE
p. 106
“Are you really?” said Hermione. “I know all about you, of course-I got a few extra books for background reading, and you’re in Modern Magical History and The Rise and Fall of the Dark Arts and Great Wizarding Events of the Twentieth Century.”
Hermione knows more about Harry than Harry himself. But she's not like a fangirl because right from the start Hermione treats him as "Just Harry" (which is something Ginny has never been able to do). As much as she knows about him, she is the only person not astonished by the fact he's famous.

I've been slowly re-reading the books again (and I mean slowly, it took me almost two weeks to finish CoS, lol). I've been looking for clues, seeing how things mentioned in the early books foreshadow future events and such. But I've also been looking out for H/Hr moments. Here's three that I came across while reading CoS.

The Polyjuice Potion (p. 168)
QUOTE
'It was a c-cat hair!' she howled. 'M-Millicent Bulstrode m-must have a cat! And the p-potion isn't supposed to be used for animal transformations!'

'Uh oh,' said Ron.

'You'll be teased something dreadful,' said Myrtle happily.

'It's OK, Hermione,' said Harry quickly. 'We'll take you up to the hospital wing. Madam Pomfrey never asks too many questions ...'

This moment may not look too shippy, but putting it into context, Ron is basically dumbfounded when he sees cat!Hermione and stands there blankly while Harry is quick to reassure Hermione.

The Very Secret Diary (p. 173-4)
QUOTE
'Could've been anything,' said Ron. 'Maybe he got thirty O.W.Ls or saved a teacher from the giant squid. Maybe he murdered Myrtle, that would've done everyone a favour ...'

But Harry could tell from the arrested look on Hermione's face that she was thinking what he was thinking.

'What?' said Ron, looking from one to the other.

Dobby's Reward (p. 249)
QUOTE
'Harry had been to several Hogwarts feasts, but never one quite like this. Everybody was in their pyjamas, and the celebrations lasted all night. Harry didn't know whether the best bit was Hermione running towards him, screaming, 'You solved it! You solved it!'...

QUOTE(mystiquefire @ Mar 18 2007, 09:21 PM)

I think this is the first shippy moment:

But does it qualify as subtle, which this thread is calling for? I thought the two moments I previously cited might so qualify, and I indicated as much.

QUOTE
(Accio Harry!)

Didn't Harry also read his books because he thought that being from a Muggle home would put him at a disadvantage? That he might be quite a bit behind? I doubt it was for anyone besides himself.

It would appear, wouldn't it, that there are multiple layers to this book thing? Since I first read Book Six, I've come to consider that the bond between Harry and Hermione started forming before they were even friends. So couldn't it just as well have started, as I previously tried to suggest, before they ever even met? Indeed, this might have been the first example of how they've complemented each other: Harry, before he gets on the Express, seeking knowledge of the Wizarding World through books, and Hermione, at her first meeting with Harry on the Express, showing that she's gained knowledge of him through them.

Hermione was not the first Sorted into Gryffindor -- Lavender Brown was. We're clearly told that Harry was worried considerably less about not being Sorted into Gryffindor than about not being chosen at all -- and from there, being "Sorted" back into "Dursley House"! Also, this scene occurs after the moment you and Mystiquefire agree was "the first shippy moment." Couldn't it, then, have been the second?
mystiquefire
Not sure if this is a shippy moment
QUOTE
GoF p. 79
However he and Hermione worked out where most of the poles and pegs should go…All of them stood back to admire their handiwork.
This is when everyone is setting up camp for the QWC in GoF. It's nice that H/Hr both have a common Muggle up-bringing. And once again something neither Ron nor Ginny can relate to.
*Maybe the something from the Muggle world will be a clue to finding Voldie's horcruxes; after all Voldie also had a Muggle childhood. It'd be a perfect moment to show how H/Hr work together.

Oh, I always thought that was cute! Working it all out together, etc. I don't think it's shippy but I know my heart skipped a beat when I read that. Then again, my heart always jumps when the words "Harry" and "Hermione" are in a sentence together. biggrin.gif

Slightly offtopic.gif !

My sister, mom, and I were playing the Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban game on the Playstation and there was this one part where the trio have to battle with Draco. Wells Draco and co. use this spell that gives a person a pumpkin for a head (ooooh, pumpkins....lol) and Hermione got hit and I SWEAR when she was yelling, even though it is muffled, she is saying "Harry! Help!" I know, dumb, but it's still cute.... wub.gif And kind of subtle, even if its in the game, not the book. lol.

Hmmm...I don't really think either of them are 'shippy' considering the 2 didn't even know each other, I guess. Definitely laid down a foundation, though. You're right about Lv, though. She was sorted into Gryffindor as was Seamus. Of course, Seamus took a full minute to be sorted while Hermione was sorted quickly so that possibly could have been why. Not really sure, could go either way I suppose.

IMO, though, I think the fact that Hermione has always seen Harry as 'just harry' is probably the single most important thing in their entire relationship. Especially, when you take into account that DD wanted Harry raised away from the wizarding world where everyone would know his name and there could've even been "Harry Potter Day". Hermione is the one who has been away from that also so she's in the same boat with Harry, just seeing him for who he is and not who he's 'supposed' to be.

Clever observation since the earilest of JKR's beginnings for SS/PS started out with the Potters living on a remote island with the Grangers living on mainland, Mister Granger seeing something like an explosion out on the island, driving a boat out there and checking it out. (JKrowling.com, extra stuff --the brush--, edits)

Why else would the Grangers be so significant in the beginning if the two weren't destined even before they met? Heh.

I know it's not exactly in the book, but it almost was!

I am reading through all the books again and came across a lovely subtlety in CoS last night. Hermione has just been petrified along with Penelope Clearwater:

QUOTE
Percy Weasley was sitting in a chair behind Lee, but for once he didn't seem keen to make his views heard. He was looking pale and stunned.

"Percy's in shock," George told Harry quietly. "That Ravenclaw girl--Penelope Clearwater--she's a prefect. I don't think he thought the monster would dare attack a prefect."

But Harry was only half-listening. He didn't seem to be able to get rid of the picture of Hermione, lying on the hospital bed as though carved out of stone.

The fact that JKR has made a point of showing Percy in shock over Penelope and then juxtaposed Harry in shock over Hermione is pointed. As yet, we don't know that Penelope and Percy are an "item." The twins simply think Percy's freaked out because she's a prefect--they can't tell he loves her, but that's the real reason why he seems totally detached in the scene. And Harry is detached and stunned in a mirror image of Percy's behavior--but we get to see inside Harry's thoughts. They are of Hermione. If we could see inside Percy's thoughts, we would see *his* beloved.

Oh I love this one!!!! I seem to have forgotten this particular scene...but it was really subtle. If it wasn't juxtaposed to Percy's reaction to Penelope's condition, I would think it was expected Harry to feel that way, Hermione's his friend. And to note, when we see this, we (the reader) don't even know that Percy/Penelope are dating, so it is very easy to just take it at face value that Percy IS just concerned about prefects. VERY tricky on JK's part... "re-read"...INDEED!

I like this one from the POA movie as well:
It was at the Quiddith match where every Gryffindorians were yelling "Go, Go Gryffindor!" Only Hermione distinctively yelled, "Go, Harry!" "Go, Harry!"
They've shown everybody in the stand when Harry fell from his broom after he was attacked by the dementors but the focal point is still Hermione covering her mouth full of fear and concern for Harry.
Seamus22
With the quidditch you have to love how Harry is the only one to make Hermione worry so much. Especially when she practically digs her nails into her skin freaking out. Has she ever done that for Ron? If I didn't know any better I'd she forgets he's there play too.

I love this from HBP:

". . .Or d'you [Hermione] think she [Pince] overheard you being rude about Filch? I always thought there might be something going on between them. . ."
"Oh, ha ha. . ."
Enjoying the fact that they could speak normally again, they made their way along the deserted, lamp-lit corridors back to the common room, arguing whether or not Filch and Madam Pince were secretly in love with each other.

Talk about subtle... thumbup.gif

Yea this is definitly reading way, way too much into the former post, but why did JKR choose those two characters, granted it was funny, but she could have choose different people, trelawney and flich might've had a similar effect...hell, snape and sprout might've been interesting too...

but because the two are kind of connected maybe...
the librarian, who yells and keep them (mostly Hermione) in check similarly to the way Hermione keeps her feelings in check. And the caretaker (who takes more cares for people than HArry? whistling.gif ) always keeping Harry in check when he's sneaking about to face Malfoy, with those he cares about. Doesn't he keep Harry in check?

The point is that both those two characters equal repression; what both HArry and Hermione face this year in multiple sections of their lives including love. That wasn't just a random selection on JKR's part. Even if it's not romantic, the repression in their characters was chosen to signal to the reader--guess what, 'my HBP' characters will get fixed.

With the quidditch you have to love how Harry is the only one to make Hermione worry so much. Especially when she practically digs her nails into her skin freaking out. Has she ever done that for Ron? If I didn't know any better I'd she forgets he's there play too.

I know! I always love the Quidditch scenes because of the H/Hr moments...it killed me in HBP when Harry cracked his skull and Hermione didn't come to see him... sad.gif

That we know of. I think (and secretly hope) that it's an omission on Ron's part that Hermione wasn't there, unless she was avoiding the hospital wing because of Ron's being there--but I am one of those who think Hermione's not into Ron like that at all... so I think it was omitted (kind of like the Good Luck kiss in OP--I think HP got one, we just didn't see it) but I think she was there... (If any of that makes sense.) It would be against her whole character to not visit her best friend in the hospital with a cracked skull. I mean, come on.

So I've just finished rereading OoTP as the movie is coming and all and yeah I've overcome a few moments . rolleyes.gif

Good stuff. good stuff.

There was one part, its not really a H/Hr moment but yeah..

It was after the interview publish in the Quibbler about Voldermort returning and all and Umbridge basically banned all talks of it but the professors still had ways to show how happy they were towards Harry. The funniest was when Prof. Sprout gave Griffindor 20 points when Harry handed over the watering can.

Just thought i'd put it there for laughs.

But getting to more serious matters (h/hr moments) I loved all the parts when Harry kept on referring Hermione as the reasonable part of his thoughts.

Here are some moments from PoA:

Flight of the Fat Lady (p. 120)
QUOTE
Next moment, Professor Dumbledore was there, sweeping towards the portrait; the Gryffindors squeezed together to let him through, and Harry, Ron and Hermione moved closer to see what the trouble was.

'Oh, my -' Hermione exclaimed and grabbed Harry's arm.

The Marauder's Map (p. 149)
QUOTE
'Yes, but - but -' Hermione seemed to be struggling to find another problem. 'Look, Harry still shouldn't be coming into Hogsmeade, he hasn't got a signed form! If anyone finds out, he'll be in so much trouble! And it's not nightfall yet - what if Sirius Black turns up today? Now?'

'He'd have a job spotting Harry in this,' said Ron, nodding through the mullioned windows at the thick, swirling snow.

'Come on, Hermione, it's Christmas, Harry deserves a break.'

Hermione bit her lip, looking extremely worried.

'Are you going to report me?' Harry asked her, grinning.

'Oh - of course not - but honestly, Harry -'

Gryffindor Versus Ravenclaw (p. 195-6)
QUOTE
Only one person wasn't joining in the festivities. Hermione, incredibly, was sitting in a corner, attempting to read an enormous book entitled Home Life and Social Habits of British Muggles. Harry broke away from the table where Fred and George had started juggling Butterbeer bottles, and went over to her.

'Did you even come to the match?' he asked her.

'Of course I did,' said Hermione, in a strangely high-pitched voice, not looking up. 'And I'm very glad we won, and I think you did really well, but I need to read this by Monday.'

'Come on, Hermione, come and have some food,' Harry said, looking over at Ron and wondering whether he was in a good enough mood to bury the hatchet.

'I can't, Harry, I've still got four hundred and twenty-two pages to read!' said Hermione, now sounding slightly hysterical. 'Anyway ...' she glanced at Ron, too, 'he doesn't want me to join in.'

There was no arguing with this, as Ron chose that moment to say loudly, 'If Scabbers hadn't just been eaten, he could have had some of these Fudge Flies, he used to really like them -'

Hermione burst into tears. Before Harry could say or do anything, she had tucked the enormous book under her arm, and, still sobbing, run towards the staircase to the girls' dormitaries and out of sight.

'Can't you give her a break?' Harry asked Ron quietly.

'No,' said Ron flatly.
