WHAT DOES "HMS" MEAN???
[lots of us are wondering that...

HMS stands for Her Majesty's Service, which is what the British have as a title for all of their ships.
HMS stands for Her Majesty's Ship.

Thank you!
I have been wondering for AGES. I mean.. we use the SS Fire and Ice, and that's basically the same thing, so I figured it was something like that. But I felt dumb saying HMS, not knowing exactly what I was saying.

Sep 19 2003, 09:10 PM
Ironically, SS is the same acronym I use for my D/G site, Sugar'n Spice (I'm sure it doesn't stand for that, though). I had no idea! ^^
Haha...first time I saw "HMS" I thought it was "PMS" ^^; Sorry H/Hr fans!

"SS" is the title used on US submarines. I'm not entirely sure what it means but it could be "Submarine Ship". Of course, it might also be short for USS "Unites States Ship".

I tend to agree with Kerry. SS means Steam Ship. United States Ship would be USS. And now I can add HMS to my knowledge of the ship world, since I always made up what I thought HMS meant and it never made sense. Her Majesty's Service definitely differs from Home Made Soda... lol

Hey, Kaykos, sky is blue, MalfoyMyFerret (this forum's mods) -
I hope you don't mind if I pin this topic. I've been pinning the origin of our ships' names in their respective forums, for everyone's info. Everyone, feel free to add comments, more explanations, violent objections, suggested alternatives, and wild speculations on ... tan tan ta nan ...
Why the D/G Ship is called the HMS Fire and IceBtw, here's more info on shipping:
Fandom Dictionary -- includes info on how "ship" and other terms acquired their present fandom connotations
And here's one I copied from Fiction Alley Park's
SCUSA forum:
| QUOTE |
Ship Abbreviations: HMAS, HMS, SS, RMS If you've been wondering what the ship abbreviations stand for, here's a guide: ~by plumeria of FAP SCUSA
There are three main abbreviations used here at SCUSA. Here's what they stand for:
HMAS: His/Her Majesty's Australian Ship HMS: His/Her Majesty's Ship (Great Britain) SS: Submarine (also Steamship)
I'm told that RMS, which was used for a few ships, stands for either Royal Mail Schooner or Royal Mail Steamship. However, this appears to be an obsolete title. |

OC is basically a character the author makes up. I'm not quite sure what it stands for...but I've always assumed it was "own charecter". But I've never really asked about this, so I wouldn't know for sure, I just looked at the two letters and assumed.

OC is Original Character.
i just want to know what AU means... its been bugging the hell out of me!
i think the reason that we refer to D/G as fire and ice is because we all know that draco is cold, and Ginny being a red head makes her stereotypicly fiery. AND she's a weasley known for there fiery tempers!

okay I get all those but I just wanted to know why are muffins the mascots of this ship
not that I don't like it...
but whyI read somewhere that they were like pumpkin pie to H/Hr but at least I know the story of that one, about
Harry tasting like pumpkin pieSo I was just wondering if we (D/G shippers) have a story like that, like a fic or a challenge, in the "Round Robin 2" I saw a huge use od the fuffly pastry... is that why?, or that was just in honor of the D/G?
I don't think I made any sense i this post

maybe I did *crosses fingers*

Ana - Muffins is not the mascot of the D/G ship, although I know Kristina, Faith, Ryoko, Michelle and everyone else wishes it was.

Actually, the mascot, or the symbol of the D/G is the Mai Tai.
Mai Tai - I'll have the D/Gers explain that to you.
Muffins - Go
here. Again, I'll have the D/Gers explain that to you.
- Nitya, pipsqueak.

You know guys, I'm still confused about this muffins thingy. I know Sakura explained it a while back. But I'm still confused.
But then, who said you can pick only one symbol for your ship? Or name?
Sakura1287
Feb 7 2004, 07:47 PM
Yes, Nitya is right. It's not the mascot, but we deeply and spitefully wish it were.
The muffinfilms site is what sprung the interest in muffins, but what made them a psuedo-mascot is their role in the ultra-huge DLA fic that is currently being written.
Once we start releasing it to the public, you'll understand why we talk about them everywhere.
| QUOTE |
| Mai Tai - I'll have the D/Gers explain that to you. |
This was sprung from Cassie's fic, The Draco Trilogy. Draco's favorite drink is the Mai Tai.
I personally think that the muffin would make a much better mascot, since that fic is hardly centered around D/G.
But that's just my opinion.
Thus concludes the history of the muffin.
Kristina
Edited because Pen always posts at the same time I do.

Ah, so that clears up the Mai Tai and muffins mystery! Thanks, Sakura/Tina!
As for having more than one symbol or name for a ship, we H/H shippers have the same experience. Is our ship's name HMS Pumpkin Pie or HMS Harmony? Me, I prefer Harmony, but I don't mind the Pumpkin Pie name, either.
