25Nov2003 Moving this from the "Administration" forum to the new "Newbie Guides". ~gal-texter

EDIT 28SEP2003:
Might as well merge all these appreciation topics into a single thread.

Admins - you don't need to reply. People might think you're paying me to fangirl you! Just kidding! 8-) This is just my way of saying thanks for and giving feedback on our board's features. thumbup.gif

Everyone - feel free to gush over other cool Portkey features! Just take care not to bash the other sites, please. wink.gif

I just want to keep this list handy whenever my brain goes This (non-Portkey) site doesn't offer such-and-such option? We take it for granted in Portkey!, while visiting other sites. smile.gif wink.gif

MY ORIGINAL POST on 14Sep2003
Hello, I just wanted to say thanks to James / Nappa / Heaven for making it easy to get the URL for each post. I used to have a roundabout way of doing this
(i.e., see which member made the post --> find all posts by that member --> click on that particular post --> copy and paste the URL).

This option is really handy in cross-linking threads and sites.

I'll post about something else in the Admins Only folder later...
NAPPA
smile.gif That would be me. ^.^

Tell me if there is something else might help you guys in moderating... I've been looking around to find a way to directly remove a signature with a link. But it's a lot more complicated than it sounds ^.^

Just wanted to say thanks to Nappa/James/Heaven/whomever else for these neat features. I miss them when I'm in other sites thumbup.gif

No need to reply to this post 8-)

EDIT: Also, I notice some fields are no longer instantly visible. I mean, guests (users not logged in) could not see the signature fields.
One has to click on a member's profile before seeing his/her location.

I appreciate the effort to protect our privacy, guys. If that wasn't your original intention, then consider it a side benefit. thumbup.gif

Let's see ... more board features I like:
  • Global URL of Each Post -- already mentioned
  • Absolutely cool skins! They're eye candies
  • Efficient and powerful Search Engine
  • Signatures displayed in (nearly) every post
  • Each post may be deleted by the person who made it
  • Customizable Member Title
  • Pop-up window notices of owls
  • PM mailbox that's as easy to use and organize as Outlook and other popular email programs
  • Lots of icons
  • Ease in finding a member's posts
Thieving Magpie
  • I like the image on the top right, which changes everytime I press refresh to increase the server load, which isn't that bad anymore, since even IE is caching like a charm now!
  • I like the velocity of the server.(It's quite nice if you have DSL)
  • The fe(male) icon. The best feature at all.
  • All the things galtxtr mentioned
  • And the fast feature on demand feature, which is quite unusual elsewhere

Here's another thing I missed last night:

The ease by which we use the CODE command. I tried it last night in another site. I was trying to put up a template. It wouldn't display properly there.

EDIT Sep29:

Goodness, how could I have forgotten?? online2long.gif Portkey's the only multi-national site that's building a multi-lingual forum!
Admins especially NAPPA - my Filipino (aka Pinoy) Portkey-mates were all thrilled to have our own place here. sorcerer.gif You wouldn't understand their posts in our native language, but they've been saying that.

*slaps forehead for not citing this forum earlier* Even if it's not exactly board-software related, it is cool!

MOD NOTE: This and the next 2 posts originally formed a separate thread ~gal-texter

Hi -

I was just wondering if there was a rule about not logging in for a long time - and the account will be deactivated because of that [the lack of use]. wacko.gif Sorry if that made no sense whatsoever. I'm just asking because over at another HP site, I didn't log in since March and as a result, my account got deactivated. So yeah - I was just wondering if the same rule applies here, or there's no such rule at all. (And I seriously don't want my account to get deactivated! I love Portkey too much! Err . . . yeah blink.gif )

Thank ya for your time cool.gif (if you're reading this)

No.
Portkey doesn't have this rule. And Likely never have it. Mostly because it'd would be a hassel. And doing this uses up more bandwidth. It doesn't save any bandwidth.

WHEE! biggrin.gif I see your point though. I'm so glad now *sweatdrop*

More cool font colors! I know they're available in other sites. I appreciate having them here, all the same.
Facade
I just am in love with the site. We do tend to take the features that are mentioned for granted.I was wondering what happened to the purple highlight of the user name...

I thought Nappa was thinking of replacing it with an orange background? To make our usernames more conspicuous?

NAPPA
^.^ I literally have about 12 projects regarding portkey in my hands. ^.^ There is just soooo much to do, that I often forget things. IT might be a little hil till the forums are exactly the way they were.
gal-texter
No rush, Nappa. This username thing is not a priority. smile.gif
PhoenixWriter
Something what I never saw at any other site is that Portkey offers to hoste sites like Symbolic Flights.
gal-texter
Another thing PK can be proud of: the Admins' quick response to bugs!

Today, Nappa fixed a small bug in the gender field (which we've also cited as a feature you'll miss in other sites). It now defaults to "not" instead of "male". It used to revert to the "male" default whenever a member changes his/her profile.

And another very quick response to our latest "Mod issue". thumbup.gif

*logs off PK for the night*

This is going to sound really really cheesy but . .

A shipper site that also welcomes people of other ships. [Oh great, I'm talking in the fandom language now.] I really appreciate Portkey for that. It's not a H/H, L/J, D/G and R/L site (primarily H/H) that doesn't turn away anybody. Besides that, we get to hear other people's opinions on HP and the ships - and this sort of makes the tension between ships less tense.

And of course, all the features that were already mentioned - especially the powerful search engine. And did I mention the cool mods? sorcerer.gif (And to Pen or anyone else, you ever saw this? wink.gif )

I guess these are the reasons why, and probably more, that I consider Portkey my second home.

EDIT 11/15: I forgot to mention the review system, didn't I? blush.gif Well, I love it. You don't have to wait 24 hours for the review to appear on the site; it appears instantly. That's a highly regarded feature in my case, since I'm so impatient.

*end cheesy/sappy post*
gal-texter
We were talking about another option that seems to be here since the beginning. The fact that PK lists the author's stories all on the same page. Makes it easy for readers to find his/her favorite authors' stories.

Add to that our new feature of including Portkeymates' PK stories in their respective profiles. smile.gif

PS. Nitya (Sarcastic Dragonette), thanks for that link. Sorry for my delayed reply, I haven't read your post sooner.
Nousia
Pen - it's okay.

Another cool option - anonymity when you log in. I dunno why, but that's my favorite feature. Yes, to the unspoken question, I'm in wub.gif with it.
