But for the Sake of a Decision

The grass in the park, a rich green again now, refreshed by the autumn dews after the long, hot summer, was already sprinkled with the first leaves of autumn, In the flower beds, dahlias glowed richly in the October sunshine. The red haired girl sitting on a seat near the intersection of two paths reflected that these symbolized aptly the present stage in her life. She was at a crossroads, undecided which way to take. The subdued noise of traffic reached her from the perimeter of the park. At her feet, a group of hopeful sparrows hopped and pecked and squabbled, and then flew off at the approach of a yapping terrier straining on a lead. Peace restored, she turned her mind to making a detached review of her present situation in the hope that it would help her to arrive more easily at a decision.

Family, or Draco?

This was the only thought whizzing through her mind, but it had so many twists, so many feelings attached. As she held up a small mirror, she looked at both sides of her face. One side of her face smiling, happily. The other just following as it was told to do. Ironically, her face described a lot of her life. On one side, she wanted Draco. To be with her, to care for her, to love her. On the other, she felt… strange. She had never had a feeling like it before. She didn’t know what to think. She was puzzled. She felt imprisoned by her own family, yet she was old enough to make her own choices, old enough to live her own life.

Something was stopping her.

She sighed, and leant back on her hands. Sunlight was beaming onto her back, and the autumn’s zephyr accompanying it by gently almost breathing on her back. Leaves floating slightly, and rustling as they dropped back down to the ground. She breathed in the fresh fragrance of the season, and rested her head back against the tree she was sheltered under.

As she inhaled, softly, she plucked two single, long blades of grass out of the soft ground. She smiled serenely once again. How could everything outside her mind be so peaceful, when her mind was racing with infinite thoughts? As yet another calm smile crept onto her face, she closed her eyes, released a blade of grass, and began to reminisce about all the good times she and Draco had spent together.

It was here they had confessed their feelings towards each other for the first time. Here, they sat under the stars for an entire night. One of her most memorable nights. She had rested her head upon her lover’s chest, and he had gently tucked her hair behind her ear, and pointed out various stars and correlations to her. That was the first night they had spent together. It had been bliss… She would never forget that kiss they had shared, right there, under the moon, and now, the scene around her echoed the exact same feeling.

As she fluttered he eyelids open, she began to remember her childhood. Being looked down upon by her older brothers, not be allowed out to play Quidditch. She was just, there. Incapable of doing anything important, or fun. But then things had changed. She had got herself in and out of trouble numerous times, and become a capable witch before she had finished her schooling.

She had always been told to stay away from him, but then she had been her own woman. Unknowingly releasing the other blade of grass, she sighed merrily at the looks on everyone’s faces when they had seen the pair together. Her brother, Ron, had looked livid.

Indeed, he had acted just as she had expected. Stuck up and oblivious to the fact she liked someone he had carried a grudge against forever. Oblivious to love… Just because he had never felt it himself.

Almost drifting off to sleep, she remembered when he had first kissed her. He had been no different then. He had always been a smarmy git, but he was her smarmy git. She had made the first move. She had sent Draco the letter proposing they meet. They were both prefects, so it wouldn’t have been a bother. She had been timid. She had weighed up her choices, and was so close to not turning up.

She had been scared, she was still scared. She had hid in the corner, the light illuminating the doorway, and, in a flash, she had been there. He seemed different though, as though he had been waiting. But surely not, she had only been a few minutes late. Of course, she was wrong. Draco had been cocky, but she knew it was a masquerade. Of course, she had arranged the meeting to tell him to leave her alone. To stop “playing with my head.” But it was far from that. Indeed, she had always known she was under his spell. She had longed to touch him, to kiss him… To love him.

She had been tempting Draco, and Draco had been tempting her. Though they hadn’t known it, they had always seemed to be the perfect match. Ginny had a fiery personality, and Draco had an icy cold one. They had complimented each other so well, but had been too foolish to see it until that night. Before she had known what had happened, Draco had kissed her, forcefully. She had not kissed back, but had indeed enjoyed it.

Now she had to make a decision. The sweet years she had shared with her love, or the years of torment and grief she had shared with her family. Normally it would have been an easy choice, but this was her family. Was she prepared to let it all go, just for loves sake?

Was she prepared to give up her lifetime filled with memories, even if some weren’t exactly reflections on the greatest of times?

But…

Was she prepared to give up Draco? Her only true love, the only one who understood her? The one who had tormented her during her schooling, the one who had confessed his burning desire to be with her? The one she had shared so many beautiful memories with.

Could she ever give up her true love? Could she ever give up her family?

Why did she have to be in the middle of this huge dilemma? Why couldn’t her life just be simple, like so many others? Reminiscing again, she sighed, and looked up. She knew what she had to do, and she knew how she had to do it. She had to follow her heart, as her heart had guided her through turmoil before.

A small white feather came fluttering down. She took it to mean a sign. A sign of peace. The only peace she had ever had, was the peace she had shared with Draco. She had made her decision…

That was wonderful! Well written and with an ending that leaves the rest up to the imagination of the reader. One of the few stories that will make it on my list of favourites.
