Issues with MS Word 2007 - saving files as .docx instead of .doc

I am trying to upload a new story but keep getting the following message:

We can only accept files in HTML or DOC formats. You uploaded application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.template.

I'm new to Microsoft Office 2007 and don't know what I'm doing.

HELP!!!

MOD NOTE 2008: Close MS Word while uploading, as explained here.

.docx is the default extension for 2007 Word. You can choose to save as .doc (the older version).

Hey guys, I've looked at the FAQ on here by Nappa and while a solution to problems for uploading is offered for microsoft word 2003 there isn't one for 2007.

Can anyone help me please? nothing is working. Oh and I have is saved as a DOC not DOCX I know you get a choice. smile.gif

Thanks,
Snoopy

Hm, im not an office 07 expert, but I believe it might be possible to download a patch off Microsoft's website to switch it to a 2003 doc format, or maybe a freeware program that could do the same thing.

In other news...

Microsoft <-- SuperAngry.gif

Not spamming the forums...just showing how much I love Mircosoft and its products smile.gif

Portkey's range of expression possibilities is quite amazing...

Mod-Note Just one or two smilies explain it just as well...you know.

I wonder if MIcrosoft works would work better? If it does then I'm off to bestbuy to get it! I think it is like 30 some dollars but this is so frustrating!!!! SuperAngry.gif

What exactly isn't working? Is the story not going up? Like gti88, I'm not an expert, but I'll try to help.
snoopy_pie
Thanks for the replys but I figured out. gti88 was right in that I needed to save it as a word 2003 doc instead of a word 2007 doc. Thanks guys! smile.gif

Upload shows incomplete text? Chapter got cut off abruptly?

One of our authors had this problem last year. We solved it by looking at her original Word file and checking the point at which the uploaded text got cut, ie, the last word, number or phrase that appeared in the upload. In her case, the last phrase was Platform 9 3/4.

SOLUTION: For some reason, the fraction "3/4" was interpreted as the end of the upload.

To fix this, disable Microsoft Word's Tools > Auto Correct Options > Auto Format as you type > Replace as you type - Fractions (1/2) with fraction character 1/2.
This is the menu for MS Word 2003; I don't know the equivalent for Word 2007 or newer versions. You could probably enter "auto correct fractions" in Word 2007's help.

Then reupload the chapter. Afterwards, you could edit your story summary to say "Chapter x re-posted." Go to your Author Options menu > Story Edit / Upload > Edit Properties > edit the summary.

Upload shows one or two numbers at the end of the chapter?

This means your Word doc file has page numbers saved in its header and footer. Say your Word file has 6 pages, then the header and/or footer would show the number 6. They'd show up in the Portkey upload as two number 6's at the end of the text.

FIXES:

If you'd prefer retaining the page numbers in your Word file, then:

-- Let the numbers stay in the PK upload. They're no big deal anyway. OR

-- Display the page number in the header only or in the footer only. That way, the last page number will show up only once in the PK upload. OR

-- Do these steps when you preview the upload in your Author Options menu:

-> copy and paste the chapter text onto a blank Word document
-> then save it as a .doc file
-> remove the page numbers
-> then upload that corrected .doc file. It won't save the page numbers, but it won't display the page numbers in the PK upload either.

Upload shows part of text in different color (say, pale gray)

Check your Word file if that particular text has a different font color than the rest of the chapter. Most likely that's what's causing this issue.

FIX:

Use the same color for your entire chapter. When you're done writing the Word file, highlight all of the text by hitting Ctrl+A. Then select the font color and save the file as you normally do.

For fics already written and saved as Word files, then do these steps for each file:
-> open the document,
-> hit Ctrl+A (to highlight the entire file's text),
-> select font color (better to select black itself than automatic),
-> save the file.

Ctrl+A works for Windows; I don't know if it works for others.

Upload shows strange symbols or characters?
Say, the " mark morphs into the Euro symbol.

I suspect this is because the chapter was saved as an MS Word doc file that uses "smart quote marks" aka "curly quote marks" instead of straight " " characters.

FIX:

--- Open your Word file.

--- Switch off "smart quotes".
in MS Word 2003, go to Tools > Auto Correct > Auto Format as you Type > look in Replace as you Type -> uncheck "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"

-- If you've already saved the chapter before using smart quotes, search in Word help for "replace quotes" or "replace quote marks". There are instructions there on how to replace smart quotes with straight ones for a previously saved (encoded) Word file. Basically, disable auto-replacement with smart quotes then use Find and Replace of all " or ' marks in your document.

--- Save the file, then re-upload.

--- You could notify your readers of the corrected upload by editing your story summary to say "Chapter x re-posted." Go to your Author Options menu > Story Edit / Upload > Edit Properties > edit the summary.
