Hey guys. I'm just really happy that I finally got accepted and was thrilled to see my story finally posted on the site.
Just one question (the last one I hope

) when I get reviews for my story, do I read those in my control panel or where do I find those?
Thanks again,

I suggest you go to the fanfic site and hit the link that says 'reviews' next to your story

In the case of your story, this would be

Q: Not getting emailed alerts for new reviews
SHORT ANSWER: technical issues with the server ~gal-texter/Pen, May 2008
I noticed a couple of days ago that I hadn't been getting any e-mails telling me that I had new reviews for my story "The Power Within" so I went to the site and found out I had fifteen of them! I was wondering if there was a reason why it suddenly stopped working and if there is a way to fix this? Thanks! MisCard

Hmm... this is odd.
I noticed that a new chapter came out on a fic I had a new chapter alert out for, and didn't recieve any e-mails either. I thought it might have been because I'd run out of points, but I checked and that wasn't the case. I never mentioned it because I wasn't too worried -- it was just the one, and I thought perhaps I'd just somehow missed it on the way, but this makes me wonder about that.
I don't know about reviews, though, but I'm wondering if the issue is more widespread then just review alerts.

I've never get email notification! Not that I really mind - I like coming to the site and being pleasantly surprised. Still, I don't get emails whenever I have a new review.

Yeah I've stopped recieving e-mail's for all stories, or so it seems. They were on my alert list too.
It could just be a bug...

The reason we didn't see the problem on the server is that - we didn't have any problems with the mail server. IT showed it was running. The problem is that it had updated to a version - by the servers' updater - that makes some configurations errors. and starts to trap emails on the server.
Anyway - it should be fixed. IF you guys notice this or other problems - post on it

thanks for bringing this to our notice

James is in Australia at the moment. So when he comes back I will get him to check his info. I checked the forum info yesterday - no problems with me getting emails. So if it doesn't happen on the fanfiction section - then it's something that is wrong in the fanfiction section.

No, they aren't. At least, I'm still not getting them. I ran a test, stuck a review into one of my own stories (extra credit). The message that appeared afterwards was as follows:
Warning: fsockopen(): unable to connect to 65.125.226.114:25 in /home/portkey/public_html/sources/class.smtp.inc on line 87
Array ( [0] => Failed to connect to server: Connection refused [1] => Not connected! ) Your review was submitted successfully.

Don't know if that will help you track down the problem or not, but there you go...

Okay. Can you try now ? I've done the same test as you - and no problem. Atleast no errors. I would like to know if it was fixed or not. Sorry about the problems. It seems that when we upgraded our server's version to the latests, it applied a setting ( * checks if the user has checked their mail account for new mail - and if they haven't not allow the user to send email - this is done to prevent spamming * ). I've found a way to bypass this. And I hope it's working now.

I've tested with yahoo - I got the email from the server. James has verified that he did not get an internal server error. I will tentatively say it's okay now. I've totally removed Exim and reinstalled it. The next step would be move out of this box and into a new server

The other reason might be the email address you're using is rejecting our emails.
Can you test the settings please. Thanks.

It might have stopped working again - I didn't get a review note. for the latest review on my fic. - Although the review isn't that old so I guess the server could be slow.

Replying to the reviewer~Dear everyone:
I noticed while reading the reviews of some stories that the author could write his/her own reply, and I don't know how. I searched for this topic but I couldn't find any in the forums. Could anyone please teach me how to do it? Thanks.

It's a cool feature!

Oh, I get it now. Thanks, NAPPA!!!!!!!!!!
I thought logging on in the users panel was enough and authors can do everything after that. So that's why I was clueless on what to do.
I'm happily replying to the most recent reviews now...

Email alerts not working
My e-mail alerts stopped working about five days ago and I figured it was something to do with setting up my new computer. I've checked security settings, I made sure that any site e-mails are allowed and I tried resetting the option on my authors page. Is there anything else I can try to get it working again?

Hi MisCard,
this problem is most probably caused by a malfunction of the portkey mailserver again. The only mails I received from Portkey in the last 5 days were notifications of personal messages.
Nappa is working on it, but it may take a bit longer than usual until we can fix this problem. For now, the only workaround is to check for new reviews manually.

Orig Topic Title: Story content in reviews - spam
I'm sorry if I've done this wrong, but I am a fairly new author to PK, and haven't ever posted in a thread. But just recently, I've been getting pieces of story in my review section...repeated several times, sometimes actual bits of my story, and sometimes some other story. It's kind of a pain to scroll through, but I was just wondering if someone's doing it to up their points. Can I disable anonymous reviews, or should I just remove them once they've been posted?
Another
Aug 7 2005, 10:42 PM
That's just pure spam. But I don't think it could be for Portkey Points since it's anonymous and unregistered.
These
reviews are just cram-packed with spam. I don't suppose that the IP addresses of anonymous posters are logged? That would be nice. . . .
If Nappa or James doesn't notice this thread, I'll PM a request to see what can be done. Too bad there aren't review mods. And I honestly don't remember whether or not you can disable anonymous review. It'd be in your control panel, if there is such an option.
~Jonathan
July 2008:
There is an option to disable, moderate, or refuse reviews from anonymous or registered users. It's in the control panel (users.portkey.org > Author Options menu > Author Options item.
I don't know if these options were available at the time these posts were made. - gal-texter

Can authors get review alerts or do you have to go to the story and look at the reviews?

Dec 17 2006, 02:07 AM
Yes you can get review notices.
Go into your control panel and choose "author options" it is in the second box. Then you check a box there that allows you to get them.
Hope that helps.
Manda
inserting detailed procedures:
1. Log in http://users.portkey.org (this is the fanfiction control panel).
2. Check that your email address is spelled correctly in there. Here's how to check and/or change it.
3. Hit Author Options menu > Author Options link.
4. Check the box for Enable Review Alert.
5. Check your email account's spam filters and spam folders.

You have to comment on their story, I think. Then select if you want them to be a favorite author and/or have author alerts.

Steps in Spam Prevention
Hey everyone,
Just a note for anybody that has noticed a few changes to the reviewing process on the fanfiction site.
New users, and anonymous reviews now require "image verification". This requires the user to type out the text displayed in an image to verify that you are a human and not an automated post.
We have done our best to avoid this step but as spam has grown on the internet we have been left with no choice but to take this measure. I hope that our guests will still take the time to give something back and review, despite this inconvenient step. Remember that it can be avoided by registering!
If anybody has any problems with image verification, please reply to this thread or send me an email at james@portkey.org.
Thanks,
James

How do you give author feedback to your reviews?
Press the "Reply" button that shows up after every review on the review page. If you're not
signed in as the author of the story, then the buttons won't be accessible.
Thanks for the help. I've inserted a link to the screencap of the login boxes. Just wanted to add that those who've left "signed" reviews will get emailed alerts of the authors' replies. Also, author can edit their reply by hitting the Reply button again, but that will send another email to the reviewer.
