Is there a way to replace a chapter that was already uploaded without deleting it altogether in fanfiction.portkey.org?

Thanks.

Yeah. All you have to do is select which chapter to replace, and upload the file you wish to replace the previous content. Easy as that. smile.gif

I've got a story I'm going through and improving and I was wondering how I should put it on Portkey. Do I need to delete or overwrite the old verion or can I make a new story for the updated version?

NAPPA
DO NOT DELETE CHAPTERS!!!! - This WILL delete the reviews you have for those chapters , and it is not recoverable. Basically, you do the same thing as you would do to UPLOAD the a new chapter - BUT - you choose from the drop down ( above where you specify the file location ), which chapter you want to upload the file into. This will not kill your old reviews.

I've posted a fic, but I need to edit it (needs better spacing), but I don't want to lose my reviews. Is there any way to edit the work without removing the whole thing?

Thanks!

(ps: I wasn't sure if this is the right place for this question...if it's not, please feel free to put it where it belongs)

Wow...I seem to be really good at answering my own questions. Maybe if I didn't try asking them in the wee hours of the morning I'd have more success with the search for answers. smile.gif

Just in case anyone needs to know the answer, it's right here.

How do I rewrite an already posted fic?online2long.gif

I have no idea about this and I am really desperate to know if this is possible...I'm an author and have already posted a fic at portkey in the fanfic section. Is it possible to rewrite the fic or do I have to remove it entirely from my panel and upload the corrected fic again? Btw, its already a completed fic...

Don't delete the whole fic or you'll lose all the reviews associated with it! You can upload new chapters to replace the ones you want to rewrite from your control panel. Take a look at the second half of this post by NAPPA.

I hope that you've found this helpful, and that you've found it in general--I moved your question here from Polishing the Quill.

Feel free to come back here with more questions if that wasn't what you needed.

Once a story chapter is posted, is there anyway to edit it without deleting it and starting all over?

I don't get tons of reviews, but I realize I made a glaring error in my latest post that I'd love to correct. The only way I can see to make the corrections is to delete the whole chapter and lose the reviews, then repost.

Thanks for your help,

Yes, you can update a chapter by:

1 - in your control panel click on "Story Edit / Upload"
2 - click "Upload Chapter" for the story in question
3 - in the pull-down box, instead of selecting "[New] Chapter X" select ther chapter in question "[Exists] Chapter N"
4 - enter the chapter name
5 - enter/browse for the document WITH the changes

And you're done. The reviews stay intact and the chapter is updated.

Copying these explanations that are included in the automated emails sent to an applicant when a fic mod approves their author application:

In order to replace a chapter you *must* do the following:

1. Login to the Control Panel

2. Click on Story Edit/Upload chapter from the control panel

3. Go to Upload Chapter

4. Click the drop down menu that has the list of chapters.

5. Fill in the rest of the information as you do with a normal upload.

6. Press upload. Verify.

7. All done.

Using this option will not make you lose your reviews. It also will not make the story appear on the "New/Updated" page, or send emailed chapter alerts about the story.

I've paraphrased the last paragraph. wink.gif

Would the reviews be affected when editing the story's summary or other properties?

Hey Gal-Texter,

Got a new question for you. If I replace my present story summary with a new one do I lose my reviews or anything like that? I wouldn't think so but I'd rather be sure.
Thanks as always,
ShouldbeHHR
gal-texter
You're correct in thinking that it's safe to change your story summary. It won't affect the reviews. smile.gif Changing the other story properties like story title or chapter title won't affect the reviews either.

Missing chapter + discrepancy in chapter stats for reviews and hits

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give you a heads up about the statistics page of the fanfic side of the site...recently I've noted that some chapters I had uploaded long ago, are missing...the reviews for them are still there...

Also, for one of my fics, there's a discrepancy between the number of reviews that the stats say I have, and the actual number there are...

Not sure if it's an issue with the code, or maybe it's just routine maintenance...can you guys gimme a shout on what it might be?

Thank you in advance.
gal-texter
Can you give us the URL to the story and the missing chapter numbers?

As for the reviews, did you mean that the numbers in your control panel (users.portkey.org) don't match with the numbers shown in fanfiction.portkey.org pages? Can you give us that story's ID # too and the chapter numbers for those mismatched numbers?

You can post the info here or PM them to me, so that I can take a look through the fic admin control panel. The story ID number/s would really be helpful.
gti88
PMed you with the details around that...smile.gif

Thank you!

For other authors' info, here's my PM convo with gti88.

The story is A Strike Upon the Hour...chapter 11 and 12 went missing, but I uploaded them again a few days ago, and now they're fine...

The view count went back to zero, but the reviews still showed up...the odd thing is that it has 133 reviews, and they were still there, but the stats page only said 114...as soon as i reloaded the chapters, the count was restored...

URL to the story is above...rated M, so I didn't wanna post it on the forums...

Again, thanks for everything...

Sometimes some chapters get corrupted. Perhaps the data loss has something to do with server problems or software issues, esp while our techies make backups of our database.

You probably know more about PHP* than I do, but I think the reviews and views stats get associated with each chapter. Hence, if there's something wrong with the chapter, it affects the others. Or if authors delete a story (ie, all chapters), then all reviews and related stats get deleted too.

Oh, it's okay to link to adult-rated stories as long as you indicate its adult rating. smile.gif
