Some one else on fanfiction.net has stolen my name, and I'm still currently a member of fan fiction.net. Is it even possible for someone to have the same name as me? I have been there for the past year and a half and now this person can just come along and use it too. This just sickens me!!

Yeah, I noticed that. I was browsing through FF.net when I saw those fics. At first I thought you were posting on ff.net again but after a quick glance I noticed that the quality of writing is far lower than yours. Not to mention the style was completely different.

You know, I do believe that people can use the same pennames: for example, there are loads of "Hermione Potter"s on FF.net. However, this person has clearly stolen your penname (unless he/she happens to be a "Tenchi Muyou" fan who also writes HP fanfics) and that's despicable.

I even wonder if this author knows the character "Ryoko" from "Tenchi" is!

Yes thats true, but also the fact that they spell Ryoko differently. I chose the American/Japanese spelling. Her name is really spelled Ryouko. THats how you know that person took my name. There aren't that many Ryoko Blues you know even if they have similar pen names, they have to be a little different. That person's is my name exactly.
Gaia13
That's really annoying. You should send that person an e-mail and ask them if they knew that they were taking your penname. I get bored and change my penname often, but I always put my new penname through the search engine to make sure that I"m not taking anyone else's name. E.C.R. is right, there are a LOT of Hermione Potters and that type of thing on there. But that's really a shame that someone would actually try to steal your penname - and your writing 'status', so to speak.

NAPPA
I'm not a big author, but there is another person on ff.net with Nappa as the name - instead of NAPPA (mine). I remember him putting up a notice that he's not the same as me when people asked what happened to "his" Harry Potter fics.

I do think it's highly "coincidental" that a Harry Potter fanfic write has got the same name as you. My advice would be to ask the person politely to see if they can find it in their heart - emphasise that they are doing you a favour - and change the name = or to put up a link to your bio saying there is another person by the same name. happy.gif

If he/sh does nothing - don't do anything more. If you leave it well enough alone, people would know there is two Ryokos. One that WE like - one that is less than the one that we like. smile.gif

*hugs*

NAPPA... not Nappa
James
ohh, the temptation to change my name to nappa is strong right now wink.gif

but on the topic, the best you can hope for is asking politely. Fanfiction.net are useless at best and wont bother doing anything to help you.

Ryoko,

I'll start the ball rolling and politely send an email letting this writer know that the name they have chosen is already taken by a popular fanfiction writer and perhaps they should consider something else to write under. Hopefully, other people will too and this person will get the not-so-subtle hint.

Actually I saw that too. And I agree with sending them a nice note.

However Ryoko you're not the first one who's name was used and stolen. Although there are less people who can come up with the Name: Ryoko Blue.

Lady Darkshine, who used to be "Harry's-gurl" first also had a lot more authors of the same name after a while.
Fanfiction.net allows authors to use the same pen-name, tho they have different IDs.

For Meg (Lady Darkshine) she just changed her pen name, and that was all.
At least its safe for me to say, no one would want to change their pen name to: Max LoneWolf. biggrin.gif
Quite long to type and no benefits smile.gif

Yeah, I'd agree with all of them. *points to the other people*

I think though, that with over 60 000 HP fics the last time I checked, you're always going to get someone with the same penname than you, even if it is bizarre (not saying yours is, but you get my meaning smile.gif). I know that mine originally was just 'Jules', before I realised there's about 30 others. So I then changed it to my s/n - b4zookajules - which is a lot less common.

But yes, I'd just send them an email.. and if all else fails, stick a note in your profile. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's they're an alright person. smile.gif

hope u get your idenity back cuz that sux
Carla
That is one thing that irks me about ff.net, that two people can have the same pennames. That's why I didn't use Carla for my account... there's 7 Carlas already, not counting many Carla + something-elses. *sigh* And even after I got cali-chan, there are tons of people who regularly ask me if I'm another cali (there's 5 of them), or kali, or calli, or kalli, or cal... *sigh again*

Still, and I hate to disagree with everyone, but I don't think you guys should take it so seriously. Hey, maybe she (I'm assuming she's female) didn't do it on purpose. Maybe she DOES like Ryoko from Tenchi and likes color blue. *shrugs* I don't think it's so bad, Ryoko. At most, you can do what Nappa did and put a little notice on your author's note to clear that you're not her. That's not that hard, is it? And besides, she's probably also being asked about your fics quite a lot, since they're more popular than hers. I don't think she's done anything wrong... it's not like she's stealing your fics or anything.

Well, no worries everyone, this person has changed her penname. Apparently (according to Heaven) this person had recieved the penname "Ryoko Blue" from a friend and didn't know there was another "Ryoko Blue" on FF.net. WHichever way, the problem has been corrected now.

Hi there folks,

I've been in and out of these boards for about two years now, and also am a regular over in other fandoms at FF.net, where I just came across a fanfic that I am sure has had parts substantially taken from an H/Hr fic I read. The problem?

I believe it was here at Porkey, yet I cannot for the life of me remember the fic's name or author. In addition, I obviously don't want to send a message to the author accusing them especially if they happen to have written the H/Hr fic and simply wished to borrow the plot and much of the description for an Anakin/Padme piece. I have simply linked the questionable fic below, and if anyone can let me know which H/Hr fic it came from I would be so much obliged. The line "Her hair had been pulled back at the sides, her Padawan braid laid across her cheek and for some reason, this style made it look less bushy." is what really made me do the double-take. I know I read that exact line about bushy hair from the H/Hr fic, and this would certainly be the first time I had ever read about the Star Wars character's hair described as bushy.

But again, I don't want to step upon any toes, so if this is the wrong forum, kindly direct me to the correct place. Thanks so much, and thanks for keeping this ship alive and vibrant!

MOD NOTE: merging this into a related thread.

So I posted Growing Up Granger in August 2007 http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/7592.

I stumbled across a story on fanfiction.net posted in October 2007 http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3867175/1/ which is eerily similar.

Do you think it's coincidence?

It's been resolved. Just ignore this.

I have a problem at ff.net as well.

I wrote this fanfication for another fandom (that is still a WIP) and I checked before I started writing and just before I posted to make sure my story was unique. I wanted to be original, you know? But then, when I posted chapter five, I get this message from a faithful reviewer of mine who tells me that someone has just posted a story with a base plot almost identical to mine. So, I checked my veiwers and the list of people who read my story thinking maybe it was a just a concidence. It was not. This person had not only read my fanfiction, but also has it under Story Alert, Story Favorites, & me under Author Alert. Now, this person has create more chapters and the story does change from mine (i.e. different events happen then in mine) however the plot idea was original mine.

Should I do something about it? Is there anything I can do about it?

PS. That faithful reviewer of mine kindly message the person about the similar plot idea and events in the first two chapters of the story, but never recieved a response back to my knowledge.
ChiffaniChan
It sounds stolen to me, but unfortually FF.net won't delete it or anything if is just a idea or ideas. You could try ask why, because it may have not been like that, but if they don't answer than it most definetly was.
Angel-Wing
I guess it doesn't hurt to contact the Admins in FFnet and explain the issue to them, but sadly, you can't do more than that if it isn't direct plagiarism (as in your same words and everything).

Plots and ideas are hard to prove as your own, or even as original. It's even harder to do something about it when it's a free work published online.

I hope your case is solved thumbup.gif

Just so people know, and this is probably the case for a number of writers on here, PK is the only place where I have posted my stories. So if you find them anywhere else, please let me know.

You can put that notice in your author's profile too.

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.
