The Portkey Elder Wand Fanfiction Competition!

We have all now had a chance now to read and digest Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. Opinions as always vary greatly, as different people looked for different things in the 7th and final book.

No, the Harry Potter series did not end or feature Harry and Hermione together, according to the epilogue. But if you take the epilogue out of it, a strong case could be made for all relationships. So that is just what we are doing. For this competition – we’re taking the epilogue out of it!

We hope that this competition will help to cheer those of you up whose spirits were dampened by the 7th book. If you want to read quality stories that end the way you want them to, then this competition is definitely for you. On top of your awesome reviews, we’re going to feature prizes for our top authors in this competition.

This time around we’re actually making one distinction. Stories will be divided into two “categories” when prizes are awarded. The first category will be short stories of 5 chapters or less, and the second category is intended to be more along the lines of “novel length” – greater than 5 chapters. This will provide greater chances for shorter stories, as results told us from the last competition that the top stories were in that case all novel length.

We have created a mini site for this competition - it can be found at http://fanfiction.portkey.org/elderwand/. You will find that it is much easier to discover whether your favourite entries have been updated, what rating you gave them and when you last read the story!

How does the competition work?

The format is almost identical to the one used in our book 6 competition – titled “Felix Felicis”. The real basis of the system is that authors enter their story into the competition if it meets the criteria of it. Entries are then rated by registered members of Portkey over on the fanfiction section, with one rating per member per story. That rating can be changed/updated at any time and members are told the rating they have given a story each chapter that they read, giving them the opportunity to upgrade or downgrade the rating based on the content and plot of the story.

Criteria for entry
  1. The author of the story MUST have entirely read Deathly Hollows, and the story must be set DURING or AFTER the Deathly Hollows story. So for those of you starting a book 6 fanfiction just now, your story is not eligible. Furthermore, the story must have been started AFTER 21 July 2007. (Authors that posted after that date will have the option of “editing” their stories in their author preferences in order to enter the competition)

  2. The story cannot “ignore” all the events of the Deathly Hollows (exception: the epilogue may be ignored! See later rules). Different takes on the Deathly Hollows are fine. This means that your story could potentially be a 7th year story - but it would need to deal loosely with at least some of the facts and items of book 7. Put another way, it cannot be an entirely alternative and different 7th year story that could have been started before book 7, readers should clearly be able to tell that the author has read book 7.

  3. We entirely encourage completely ignoring the epilogue of book 7. Start your fanfiction the second that Deathly Hollows finishes! Set it a few years later. The possibilities are endless, but in the name of fiction we beg of you, if it suites your story, don’t follow or listen to the epilogue featured in Deathly Hollows.
In short: If your story starts after or takes place during book 7, was started after you’d read Deathly Hollows and the story does not simply ignore the whole book, it will meet these rules. Importantly: You do NOT need to the follow the book’s epilogue. Unsure about anything? Reply to this thread!

For a full and up-to-date copy of these rules please refer to this page.

Prizes?

Yes! The prizes are not entirely confirmed at this point, but on the prizes page, which is constantly being updated. Equally, for a very good idea of what the prizes will be this time around, you can see the Felix Felicis prize page.

When and until when?

It is now possible to enter the competition – right now! You simply need to be a Portkey.org author. If you are not – there is still plenty of time to sign up within the author area.

We are tentatively setting a closing date for new story entries at September 8 (but you will have plenty of notice of the confirmed closing date). Stories will then be voted on and rated by our members for an additional 2 weeks after the closing date, so if the closing date for entries remains September 8, the voting period would end on September 22. These dates will be confirmed in time.

Any Questions?

If you have a question, simply reply to this thread and ask it! I will get to it as soon as possible. Remember most importantly that this story is about fun and finding quality fanfiction!

Um, I have a question: you said the Epilogue may be ignored, but what about stories that are set *after* the epilogue? Are they allowed?

Thanks!

Mod Note: Removed superfluous quote of an important post that could conceivably change. ~Jonathan

You can set your story after the epilogue or before it and it may include the epilogue or ignore it. Provided the story was started after the 7th book then it should be fine smile.gif

Will the story have to be finished on the closing date, or it can still be in progress? Are collections of one shots eligible, or should I enter the one-shots as single fics in the less than five chapters category?
Angel 737
Okay, I have an idea at what I can do for a story but it takes place in the middle of DH and it would probably be a one or two shot. Would that be okay or would I have to continue it till the end of the book?

This competition sounds awesome! I'm signing up for sure.

Just one question...the contest closes September 8, but is that final?

I'm sorry that I wasn't more clear on this. No, the story does not need to be finished by the closing date.

If the stories are a series of separate stories, they should all be entered as separate entries and posted as individual stories. The normal rules for posting a story apply. If the "chapters" are not related to each other/part of a collective story then they should be posted as separate stories.

No, you don't need to continue it until the end of the book. You can write a story that takes place in the middle of deathly hollows, and it doesn't need to reach the end of the deathly hollows.

All closing dates are provisional at this stage, but remember that you may still update any entries after the closing date! You simply need to get one chapter uploaded and the story entered.

As a general update on the prizes, we can expect them announced within the next few days, NAPPA and I are still working through them.

I'm happy to see a healthy number of entries coming into the system too. Really happy to see plenty of community support behind this smile.gif

Strong cases can definitely be made for all relationships - for example, there's some strong shipping for H/Hr in the book, courtesy of Voldemort (through the Horcrux Locket). Voldy ships H/Hr!

Sign me up. I just have to not procrastinate....o.o

Hi, I just wanted to suggest making an announcement about this on the PK main page. I don't check the forums often, but I've been checking the main page for an announcement about the fic competition since DH came out. (You announced on the front page there would be one, but didn't announce it - or at least, I didn't see one.)

Other than that, this looks awesome! I can't wait to read all the entries!

So, is that it? Today is the 9th...is the entry deadline past now?

No, as noted previously the closing dates for entries were provisional only in my initial post. We've decided, given the number of novel length fics that are entered in the competition and the success of it so far, to extend it beyond the deadlines we had previously announced. Therefore, we decided that if the competition was going to run longer we could allow entry to remain open for longer as well.

On another note, I notice that I never mentioned the prizes are up. They are up on the prizes page. We have not ruled out the possibility of adding more prizes after entries close.

It's amazing that I just made it...

OK, when will the winners be announced?
gti88
Yeah, that's something I'd like to know about too. smile.gif
James
Just to everyone wondering: Yes there has been some delay in announcing the winners. Voting has not been disabled and the voting period has effectively been extended.

This has been for a number of complex reasons, including my very limited access to internet currently and the need for me to work on finishing off some vital mod tools that give mods more powers to remove/suspend fanfictions.

I'm very sorry about this delay, I did not forsee it and with some luck we'll have winners announced and emails going out within the next couple of days!

Thanks agian for your patience,
James
Bexis
Just so long as you get them up before I leave for a three-week vacation on the South Island of NZ (halfway around the world) on 12/18. I'll be completely without Internet access for that period - and I won't be minding it a bit.

So...any word on how things are moving along? smile.gif

Portkey Elder Wand Competition Results

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody that entered and voted in this competition, making it such a huge success. Extending the competition has resulting in better participation than last time around and it has been an excellent chance for us to test some new features that we hope to bring back to Portkey very soon.

Without further ado, our winners:

1st Prize (Story voted highest rating):
A Day at The Park by Searcy

2nd Prize (Story voted second highest rating):
Love Lost. Love Found. by Harrys Mistress

3rd Prize (Story voted third highest rating):
The Tent by Wilkes

Top Story (Less than 4 chapters):
Finding Jane by DeliverMeFromEve

The winners have all been sent emails to the email addresses listed in their accounts. If there are any problems receiving these emails please contact me on james@portkey.org.

On a side note, I'd like to apologize for the lateness in wrapping up this competition. The death of a close relative was a delaying factor and I've had a very large number of things to deal with both on Portkey and outside it to catch up on. Moderator tools to help our moderators in dealing with stories that break our rules are receiving their finishing touches now and will provide a lot of assistance with keeping our site at the quality we all expect.

On that note, please make use of the "report this story" feature listed on all stories to help our moderators when you spot stories breaching the rules.

Thanks,
James
