Of DVD Players and Chick Flicks
Harry Potter and Hermione Granger were feverishly reading a book, in the living room of their shared apartment, and taking notes. See, the two of them had decided that there was no one else they would like to live with, once out of school, since both were singles, and had known each other for seven years now.
Their mutual best friend, Ronald Weasley, had instead gone to live with his fiancé, Luna Lovegood. They made a wonderful couple, and Harry and Hermione couldn’t help thinking she was truly the right match for the redhead.
Suddenly, Harry put his feather down. “I need a pause, Hermione” he said, rubbing his temples.
She looked at him, and met those green eyes she could never resist. He gave her his best puppy face, and she almost melted right there.
“Oh, ok. I guess a short pause can’t hurt. But you know we need to finish going trough this book today right? The admittance exam for the Auror Program is in just a week!”
“I know, I know” he grinned. “We’ll do fine” he reassured her then, grinning.
“Well, since we stopped, I’ll go fix both of us a glass of pumpkin juice” she said, smiling back, and walking to the kitchen. Harry followed her figure with his eyes, unable to tear his gaze away.
Suddenly, the door bell rang.
“I’ll get it” he said, standing up and going to open the door.
“Hello, Harry” Arthur Weasley said.
“Mr. Weasley! It’s a pleasure to see you! Please, come in” the young man politely said.
“Hi, Mr. Weasley” Hermione said, smiling, coming out of the kitchen with three glasses of pumpkin juice. She had made one for the man too, hearing Harry greet him.
“Hello, Hermione”
“So, what brings you here?” Harry asked, after a thank you nod to Hermione for the drink.
“Ah, well, you know how Molly is. She was worried about the two of you, since there’s this big exam in a week…she feared you would not take care of yourselves, busy with the studies” Arthur said with a smile. “I tried telling her you would be fine, but she wouldn’t stop nagging me about checking on you, so here I am”
“Well, thanks for the attention, but really, we are fine” Harry said, and Hermione nodded with a smile. It felt good to know someone cared about them so much, even if Molly Weasley could be excessively motherly at times. But for Harry, who had lost his parents, it was important, and while Hermione had her family still, she was glad for the attention too.
“Yeah, I had no doubt about it. I hope I haven’t disturbed you though…”
“No way, we were having a pause anyhow” Harry said. “So, how’s Ron doing? I heard he’s left for a tour with the Cannons”
“Yeah, they are working hard for next season, but he’s ecstatic about playing for his beloved team, so he’s happy. Luna helps him cope with the tiring trainings too” Arthur said. “They are really sweet together”
“Yeah, they are” Hermione nodded.
“So, when are the two of you going to settle down?” Arthur asked, making small talk.
Both of them almost sputtered the juice they had in their mouths.
“Wha-What do you mean with settle down?” Harry asked.
“Well, it’s clear the two of you fancy each other…” Arthur suggested, but they strongly denied it.
The older man let the matter fall, and looking around saw something that raised his interest.
“What’s that?”
“That? It’s a Muggle DVD player” Hermione said.
“And what do you do with it?”
“Well, you can watch movies. You connect it to the television, then you put the disc into the device and with the remote control you can play it, comfortably sitting on the couch” Harry explained with a smile. Arthur’s interest in Muggles was never going to die.
“Care to show me? If it’s not too time consuming for you, of course…”
“No way. It takes just few minutes to get it going. See, you put the plug in, so the electricity gives it the needed power…” Harry said, moving to do just that.
“Then you connect this cable to the telly…” he continued, while Hermione put a disc into it.
“And now that you’ve prepared everything, you take the remote control and start the movie” she ended, and moved her hand toward the control which was on the couch. Harry did the same, so their hands brushed, and both of them felt like electricity pass trough their skin. Looking at each other with wide eyes, they didn’t notice the slight grin on the older man’s face.
“You go ahead” he sad to her, with a slight falter in his voice.
She nodded, and started the movie. The next few minutes they showed Arthur all what he could do with the remote.
“Brilliant! These Muggle are fantastic. This BUB player is cool!” he exclaimed.
“Er…it’s DVD player…” Harry politely corrected the man.
“Oh, right. DVD. I’ll remember that. Well, I took even too much of your time, I’ll leave you to your work now” Arthur said, and with that he left.
Hermione was looking at Harry while he saw Arthur out, and when he turned and caught her staring, her cheeks turned pink.
“W-We should continue reading that book” she stammered.
“Right” he said.
All day there was a strange tension between them. While it had become usual for Harry to push a loose strand of hair behind her ear, after that brushing of hands he didn’t dare to do it. They would catch each other staring, and they would blush when it happened. Even their lunch was quiet, and only few words were exchanged.
Both had lots on their minds, and not for the upcoming exam. Mostly, they had thoughts about the other.
As dinner time came, Harry spoke.
“Hermione, what do you think if we go out tonight? I don’t really feel like staying at home. We can also take a movie and see it afterwards”
“I like the idea” she smiled, first time that day after Arthur had left, and he felt his heart fill with content.
“I’ll see you in the living room in twenty minutes then” he said, giving her a lopsided grin, and leaving the table to reach his room. Hermione sat there another moment, feeling a flutter in her stomach. She always did when he grinned at her like that.
Nervously going to her room, she peered through her wardrobe, discarding clothes. At the end, she had not decided yet what to wear, when Harry knocked on her door.
“I’m ready. Are you decent?”
“No!” she shrieked, and then hid behind the closet door, just in case he entered. When he didn’t she released a breath, and scolded herself.
“Stop acting like a schoolgirl at her first date, Hermione Jane Granger. It’s not like you are going on a romantic dinner anyhow, it’s just Harry”
Yeah, the problem was exactly that. It was Harry she was going out to dinner with, the young man she loved so much.
In the end she decided to not overdress, and chose a simple pair of jeans and a white top that her mother had gifted her when they finished school.
Harry heard her door opening, and rose from the couch to meet her. He was speechless.
Even dressed in such a simple way, she was gorgeous, her hair pulled into a ponytail, and just a touch of make up.
“You look smashing” he said, smiling at her.
A faint blush rose to her cheeks. “Thanks. You’re quite nice yourself” she answered.
Once they reached the restaurant, a place they had gone quite often since they had moved in that flat as it was just a five minutes walk from there, they immediately were led to a table in the back of the room, and placed their orders.
Through the meal, they made small talk, remembering good times at Hogwarts, and Harry absolutely loved when he could make Hermione laugh. It had a soothing effect on him, and he felt like he could face Voldemort again, if just she would give him a laugh and a smile of hers.
Sipping her wine, Hermione couldn’t help feeling content. Looking into Harry’s eyes she could see he was serene, and happy, and it made her feel like that too. So, when he tentatively took her hand while walking toward the Blockbuster to rent a movie, she gladly kept his hand there, entwining their fingers.
“I pick it” she said once they were in the store.
“Why’s that?” he frowned.
“Well, you’d pick some adventure movie, full of gruesome scenes, and I have no interest in seeing those, so I pick” she said, sticking her tongue at him.
“So I’ll have to watch some kind of chick flick, with girls giggling and gossiping about men?” he said, grinning. “No way!”
“Hey! They are not so bad!” she protested, putting her hands on her hips.
“Oook” he relented. “Just pick something actually viewable, right?”
“Right” she said with a sweet smile, and vanished trough she shelves.
Twenty minutes later, they were sitting on their couch, a chick flick paying on the TV, and Harry was already bored to death. “I’ll never let her pick a movie again” he vowed, but few minutes later things got more interesting.
Not really about the movie, though, but because Hermione had started leaning on him and was now actually snuggling herself on his side. Automatically his arm went around her shoulders, and without even noticing it, he pulled her even close.
It felt good to cuddle with her like that, he had to admit, although it was quite a risky situation. He didn’t know how long he could resist before acting on his feelings.
“They are cute together, aren’t they?” Hermione said, looking at him, and referring to the couple in the movie.
“Yeah, they are” he answered absent-mindedly.
Their eyes locked, and it was like they were drawn to each other. Slowly, but continuously, they moved closer and closer, till their noses almost brushed.
You could almost hear their hearts beating madly in each other chests, but after a single moment of hesitation, Harry gently tilted her head, and claimed her lips.
It was sweet, at first, and he gentlemanly waited for her to move back if she wanted. But she didn’t, and instead she ran her tongue on his lips, begging for entrance. He eagerly complied, and pulling her on his lap, started battling her tongue with his own.
The sensations both felt were incredible, no word would be able to describe them, Harry just knew he wanted to do that forever, and wondered how could he have gone on so long without it. Hermione felt exactly the same, and they both kept coming for more.
Only the lack of air imposed them to move apart from each other, and Harry took that brief moment to say the words that could give him happiness, or despair.
“Hermione, if you regret that…”
She placed a finger on his lips.
“No, Harry, I don’t. I’ve wanted this for a couple years at least, to tell the truth” she smiled, and then kissed him again. He grinned against her lips, and picking her up brought her to his room, locking it behind them just in case.
While placing the love of his life on the bed, never breaking the kiss, Harry Potter couldn’t help thinking that buying that DVD player had been one of the smartest things he had ever made.
