Just wondering...DH comes out, and this site will see a spike in attendance, but then, as we exhaust the book, people will come on here less and less...and chances are, in the extreme, that portkey could experience a similar fate...

http://sidekicks.ronandhermione.net/

This is what a ghost forum looks like...and I was a part of it, under HHr4eva, but now, you can read all the opinions, expecting a retaliation, and it's all just seems...creepily frozen, for a lack of a better adjective...

So I was thinking...maybe we could expand PK into more areas of life to retain our members...frankly, these forums play host to many great people...and if I were to start naming them, it would be at least a month before I finished...

So...any ideas?
LionA02
I hope that doesn't happen to portkey....that would be sooo sad crying.gif . i believe this site and forum will probably be active after the 7th book and before the 6th and 7th movie comes out too.

My ideas:
maybe expand the off topic threads to include a section on recommending movies, tv shows, or books for us to talk about.

~LionA02
mathiasgranger
I think making some collaboration threads for authors would be good, and you could break it down into genre and other aspects without constraining like the challenge threads.

Keep H/Hr as the flagship but offer up other book/movie/tv ships based upon mutual respect and love as opposed to ships based upon less pure and less wonderful things.
Down With Ginny!
These forums already seem to be slowing down and there's still stuff to speculate about. crying.gif What'll happen when all the answers come out? This worries me not just for PK, but for all HP forums out there. . .

We should definitely expand these forums.
gti88
Great...and we need to act fast, and come up with some sort of organization...and perhaps a list of extra topics to add...

forum.abv.bg

this is an example of what this forum could become like...the one on there covers absolutely everything...life, love, laughter, books, movies, politics, history...you name it...but, ahem...it's in Bulgarian, so I'm sorry that you can't read it...but still, you get the point...

Whoah that's a lot of stuff at once...we could get to all of that eventually, but we're going to have to start small and work our way up otherwise it's going to be too overwhelming....

So much depends on the outcome of book 7--
if as I don't believe, HHR doesn't sail we could be a site for pirate/stolen ships...and basically go on like that (I mean no modern book's bigger than Harry Potter. HHR would be the grandest ship in the fleet of other ships so why shouldn't the grandest ship recruit?)...

But...I happen to believe... whistling.gif that HHr are going to end up with the pretty little wizard's flat/castle/whatever and get married and have loads of children and Hermione's going to be the first female minister of magic...but that's just my opinion...

If that's the case, we have to ask ourselves...what is portkey exactly?

Love/relationships in literature, in movies, in stories?... portkeys take people everywhere; we could be a port for all ships, those that fail, those that sail, we could be the center...we could have sections for Jane Austen, Gone with the Wind...we could have some Anna Karenina...there are loads of other giant love triangles, check out LOST....girl and two guys, well what if we offered this site as the place for winners and losers and the road to getting there? It's like we're the man who comes and builds a house, and struggles in that house, and after awhile his children have similar, but different struggles, live with him in that same house, so the house or in this case portkey sees and lives all?
Accio Harry!
I think it's also important to stick to our PK roots, aka Harry/Hermione. No matter what happens, I know I'll still be here posting, laughing and making friends!
mar_mlt
We should increase the off-topic threads to have more things to talk about. I agree that these forums are already slowing down... we can't let that happen.

Why not open threads about Traveling for example? We could discuss the places we've been to and help fellow harmonians who are planning to visit places we've already been too.

While we're at it why not do a thread about the country we're from. I love that portkey (and even more h/hr) brings all these different cultures together... we have our own global village here!

And I agree with Accio Harry! h/hr should always be the foundation of portkey. But we could open threads in the off topic part about other ships... Like the dawson/joey thread... or the rory/jess thread. had to fit them in somewhere whistling.gif

anyway we should do our best to keep portkey alive!
star22
I'd welcome talking about other ships, but I don't think there is enough agreement on other ships. Take Dawson/Joey: you and I ship it, but I know a bunch of people here like her with Pacy. I ship Aragorn/Eowyn while most here ship him with Arwen. Many of us ship House/Cuddy, but there are also House/Cameron shippers. I'm not really sure it would work. Maybe a Jack/Sam thread. Does anyone disagree with that one? smile.gif
snoopy_pie
As much as I hate to say it I don't think anything can prevent the eventual decline of forums dealing with Harry Potter. The ride is almost over my friends. There will be less and less people being obsessed with Harry Potter once the 7th book has been out for a year or so. People move on and find other things to fill their life.

Thats just the way things go. I hope it works out for you but you just can't really predict what people will do. Personally, I think all of the Potter fan sites have been declining just a tad.

Mostly because the end is near and people are gearing down instead of gearing up. Did that make sense?

star22
I don't know. For my part, I'm sticking it out. HP to me has become more about the fandom than the books anyway. I haven't reread them in a while, but I read fanfic all the time. For some reason, the characters fascinate me as no other characters do. I have plenty of other fandoms, but HP is always at the top.
Libra
Well...I'm not so sure about opening threads for other ships. I mean we could but the thing is we are here on Portkey because of H/Hr but when it comes to other ships I'm dont think all of us will be shipping the same ships. This I believe will (I really hope not) create more/diff groups and we might not experience the same kind of unity we usually do when shipping H/Hr.

Dont get me wrong....I do want the Portkey site to remain active.....I've liked some of the other suggestions that have been mentioned though.

For now we'll have loads to discuss till DH comes out...hopefully... tongue.gif

I agree with Malinda. Portkey has been H/Hr since it opened (right?) and I think it should stay with H/Hr.

I've noticed that there hasn't been new discussion lately, but since the covers have been released, I think the discussions about what the covers and the images mean. I know the UK one is very alchemically based.

Miss Mady

I still think a collaboration aspect could be added. Why not gather the best minds/authors we have on portkey and make HBP and DH for Harmony shippers if DH goes by the wayside.

Wouldn't that be the legacy to leave for this site? H/Hr for future readers that is accessible and canon faithful.

merged with similar topic - PK mods

What happens after DH? Truth be told, interest will wane after the series end, and people will start leaving Portkey, moving on in their lives...is there anything we can do?
Rhosyn
I'm sure the site will keep going. People will want to discuss how things turned out, and those of us that like to analyze it from a literary standpoint will continue to do so. smile.gif

Besides, I don't think the people who like to write fanfiction will stop writing it, either. Whatever is in the epilogue will give way to new and fantastic adventures in the minds of fanfic writers everywhere. And they'll be wanting to post it here.

Lastly, there's movies to discuss until 2010.
Miss Mady
Yeah, the site will probably keep going. As long as there's fanfiction and writers out there writing more stories, the site will be up. Hopefully, there will be a lot of poeple still here discussing what happened in the book.

I'll still be here (to mod, of course smile.gif)- I hope there will still be lotsa people here after DH. happy.gif

Speaking as someone who left Portkey (the whole fandom, actually), I can honestly say that no, interest in HP and H/Hr will not diminish. HP is/was too much a part of our lives (a decade!) for us to just "move on with our lives". For me personally, PS/SS was the novel that rekindled my love of reading, I'll never forget that. And like a boomerang, I will always come back to the HP books -- they're fantastic (most times . . .).

And as for H/Hr, if it turns out to be OBHWF in the end, Portkey will be needed more than ever (a safe haven? unsure.gif ).

Indeed, Miss Mady. I for one don't care if the last line of DH is Harry making Ginny scream his name, I'll still be eating my pie here at PK. thumbup.gif

Yeah..agree with everyone..I'm the one of the people who have no time spending hours on the net to read fanfics. But I love fanfics. I will maybe poke around and read some..this site wil be up..I'd love to han around here, just to read great essays and discussions. smile.gif

I'm sure the site will keep going.

I'm quite positive that the PK, among other HP sites, will keep going, no matter what happens in DH. And yes, let's not forget the movies either.

I could give an example: I am an X-Phile alien.gif, meaning a fan of the best TV series ever; The X-Files. It's been four years since it's finished, the official sites and many fan sites may have closed down, but the fanfictions are still there. Even if not so many new fics are coming as they used to, the fics are still there for anyone who's interested. I'm forever thankful to people who are keeping the biggest XF fanfiction database The Gossamer Project

As HP introduced us a greater universe than any TV series could, i don't doubt even a second there might be less to the fandom once the DH is published. The possibilities are only limited by our imagination. I can guarantee that i've seen many authors here, who are quite promising, some putting even JKR herself to shame. *gasp*

Considering there are still so many fics here on PK which are still "in progress" and are to be hopefully finished, and hoping many other fics and authors may arise after the DH, i, for one, am going to visit this site frequently. As much as the Real Life allows, that is. But i always know my priorities. wink.gif

Accio Harry!
Wll, no matter what, I will still be here ranting and raving per usual, LOL.

I just hope there are still lots of people left to listen...
Arm_Wild
I'm a diehard portkey-er and no matter what happens in DH, I'll be back. HP fandom is definately a huge enough phenomenon so that there will be plenty of reasons for the site to be maintained. Now of course the activity will probably plummet. But some of us fanatics will always be hangin' around, I'm sure. smile.gif
gti88
Yeah, I guess...there's no reason to stop the site from continuing...after all, JK's footprint in literature is quite distinct...people will discuss it for a long time to come...

I'll be hanging around too...smile.gif
puck_nc
This was a topic of discussion among the attendees at Phoenix Rising several times in casual gatherings. The general consensus is that there will still be fanfic sites and archives, but "news" sites like the Leaky Cauldron and Mugglenet will eventually have no role once the last movies are out, and will fade away.

Sorry if this is offtopic.gif and I hope you all don't mind. Besides, Harry and Hermione are a lot like Mulder and Scully. M&S started off as friends and then it went on to being one the greatest romantic couples in TV drama! wub.gif

StarbuckJr - I'm an X-Phile too. I can't get enough of Mulder and Scully! In fact, I'm going to have to get off the computer in less than 15 minutes to catch The X-Files. My SciFi station carries repeat episodes of The X-Files Monday through Friday, I try hard not to miss them! The Milagro episode should be on in just a few minutes. thumbup.gif

Incidentally, here is the URL for the scripts of all The X-Files episodes:

You probably already know about this web site, but maybe other Mulder and Scully shippers might not.

I'll still be here - this is actually the only place i go for Harry Potter at the moment but it'll more likely expand.

And i'll still be writing fan fictions - i have way too many containing Harry Potter to give up on them.

If i can just figure out how to do pictures - i'll be posting them too.

No matter what - we still have the sites to come back to. biggrin.gif

NAPPA
PK - AFTER DH
Well Admin team does not have any plans to END the site. Even if we Win OR Loose the shipping wars in canon. To put it into perspective. People of other ships thought we would die off when the IoD + HBP came out. I never felt that it should. Portkey used to get around 150 - 200 users a second connected to the server. We jumped to 300+ . We fluctuate between 300 - 600. This is the fanfiction section only. As long as people love PK - PK will love them back smile.gif

Also - even if this is the last book - if Harry is alive , in a few years time JKR will prolly end up doing a new book. If he's not with Hermione. Even if that is not done. In a few years, someone is bound to make a new edgier version of the HP series for TV . Everything is recycled smile.gif

Totally agree there.
These wildly popular series never just die off. For better or for worse, there will be plenty of spinoffs and new versions to keep the hp world alive. Even though these post-series adventures usually turn out pretty bad compared to the original series, I think they are better than just having a fandom world "end on you".

I also believe JKR will eventually succumb to the pressure that will be put on her to write more hp books. Authors always do! tongue.gif
Even if Harry dies, she could write books with different protagonists set in the hp universe...

Nappa, thanks for the update! I'm really glad to hear this. There will be trremendous repercussions after DH is released, regardless of whether or not Harmony sails.

If it does, we'll be dissecting all of this for years, plus I would imagine that the fanfiction site will explode with post-DH fics. Plus the last two movies will be in production, which will also give us items for discussion.

If Harmony doesn't sail, we'll be here to mourn together.

Thanks for keeping PK going!
Matchmaker harmony84
I'll come here as long as there are updates. Iy will probably drop a bit after the books the after the movies. But then we can see who are truly loyal to this wonderful site.
CommonWelshGreen
I'm so glad the site is staying up, I might lose the will to live if it closes...

Like someone said, there are still two films left and JKR said she might do a spin off book for charity in the future. Even if there isnt any Harmony in there there might be some interesting stuff to discuss.

Anyway, PK is the bets site ever, I'm glad it will be here long after Mugglenet is gone.
Girl Number 1
I agree with all of you. A lot of people have invested time, energy and erm well a lot in the HP books. You don't just throw away something you've been so devoted to. The fan fiction, art, youtube videos etc will continue to live on.

In a century's time they'll even find a Harry/Hermione story and put it in a museum. If they have those in the future *shrugs*. We might even get recognized as a religious group who worshipped the god Harry and goddess Hermione. rolleyes.gif

Any way I've got one word AU! That should be enough to keep even the most picky content.

Nappa, I have a question for you. On the day that DH comes out are you going to shut down for a few hours ike HPANA does or are you keeping the forums up through it all? Also..if OBHWF happens rolleyes.gif will the mods be taking extra care to keep any flaming herons out of the forums for us?

okay sorry I will be on topic now...
I asked this question when I first joined PK haha. I am glad it will still be around because the theories people have are amazing to read and stuff(you people are brilliant really) and I LOVE LOVE a good fanfiction... My favorite ones were removed by the author though... sad.gif I hope she puts them back on soon....

Portkey's general plans for previous book releases have been that all new topic creation becomes moderated, and general discussion forums tend to close down. New "spoiler-oriented" forums are opened. Last time around we had a chapter-by-chapter discussion forum (with one thread for each chapter) and a finished discussion forum. The idea being that people in the middle of the book can discuss the book with others that are at the same position through the book, and people that have finished the book can discuss away to their hearts content in a seperate forum, so as not to spoil it for those in progress. I've not been in charge of our arrangements this time around so I'm not sure what the plan is exactly, but my understanding is that this will again be the case.

On the fanfiction site side of things, I can say that nothing changes except that we will probably disable the posting of new fanfictions for a day or two. When we bring the site back up for new fanfiction posting, Book 7-oriented fanfiction will be very clearly marked, and appropriate warnings thrown at readers smile.gif

With regard to the direction and future of Portkey, I think NAPPA and I have always felt that the site will remain here and remain maintained as long as at least one person is using it, and even then for historical purposes it probably would still remain. Yesterday it occured to me that the site has been around almost 5 years now! I wouldn't be surprised if we see many things left open at the completion of the book allowing for the magic to live on in fanfiction smile.gif

Well, I think we will have lots to discuss even after DH is over, regardless of the shippy-ness. I'm sure she will leave some stuff open, letting us have debates over it for years to come. tongue.gif Viva Le Portkey! happy.gif

I'm sure that PK will keep going strong long after DH, as many others have already said. The HP universe is such a rich world for authors to play in, and whatever happens in DH will only provide more opportunities for new and exciting fanfics. There are some great authors here on PK and I'll certainly be continuing to read them after DH. I'm certainly planning on getting back to my own fic "Year Seven" which I've been putting on hold in the run-up to DH.

Long live PK and H/Hr, whatever the outcome of DH! biggrin.gif
THEWIFENWV
After HBP, when I thought that we were sunk , I still came here because I felt that H/Hr was the best ship. That will never change, as a matter of fact if H/Hr does not sail (I think it will) I will need Portkey more than ever. Even if H/Hr never happens in JKR world, it will in mine. I will read H/Hr fics and discuss why H/Hr was the better ship until my eyes fail me, and Portkey will be the place that I go!
Dollface for Harmony
So yeah, I'm still going to come to Portkey, sink or sail, etcetera.

Too many smart, funny people and H/Hr goodness.

Not to mention, I don't think JKR is going to have every loose end's tie laid out neatly on a platter and served to us during DH. There will be PLENTY to talk about long after the last page has been turned.

I fear that when our ship sails, portkey is going to get too popular. I hope we don’t see a flood of the so called “canon” shippers and fair weather fans from MN and TLC. I love the size and quality of this board.

Temporarily perhaps the forums will gain fair weather posters- and again around the release of the last two films, the forums may become active with movie news.

But mostly I think, since there won't be any more "what's going to happen" speculation... the forums will slow down immensely and PK will become mainly a hub for fanfiction, which will continue on for as many years as JKR and her attorneys let it. The world itself is so beloved by so many fans that there will always be people who are actively writing stories set in the HP universe. smile.gif
