It was never sepcified in the books what house Lily was in, at least not that I can remember - we all just assume it's Gryffindor because she and James were together. So, what do you think? I say Gryffindor, but Ravenclaw wouldn't shock me either...

MOD NOTE: Locking this thread now, as:
1. it hasn't received any new replies since May 2003, and
2. as was pointed out later in this thread, JKR said in an interview that Lily was in Gryffindor.

Mod Note: I've decided to reopen this thread as it seems to be a question which comes up a fair bit and it would be nice to have the answer in the main page.

I read somewhere that Lily was in Gryffindor. I'm pretty sure that's a definite (But I could be wrong).
HermPotter69
I'm pretty sure it was Gryffindor. But there is a distinct possibility that she was in Slytherin. JKR is that kind of author. tongue.gif

I voted Slytherin for variety in the votes, lol.
harryhermionefan
I'm not sure but I always thought that Lily was in Gryffindor. smile.gif
Jacy
HermPotter - I wouldn't doubt that for a second - that's exactly the kind of thing J.K. Rowling would do... smile.gif

Starlight - If you figure out where you read it, please let me know smile.gif

At Mugglenet.com, you can see transcripts of JK's interviews...one of them specifically says that she's in Gryffindor.

Hope that helps!

Jacy
padawan leia - ahhhhhh - okay - that helps smile.gif

well...thanks! ::goes off to read interview::

*a few minutes later....*

blush.gif eh heh...okay...Lily is in Gryffindor....this is a direct quote from JK Rowling on mugglenet.com in the Scholastic Online Chat Transcript:

QUOTE
Which house was Lily Potter in, and what is her maiden name?
Her maiden name was Evans, and she was in Gryffindor (naturally).

Oh well...okay - well there you have it folks! Lily's in Gryffindor...my bad... wub.gif

Kalie
So Lily was a Gryffindor? *sighs* Well, at least I know now, eh?
E. C. R. Potter
JKR specifically mentioned in one of her interviews that Lily was in Gryffindor. In fact, the she answered it seemed to be in a tone that suggested that it should've been common knowledge.

Hey i'm not that shore on the subject but wasen't she a Fellow Griffindor woth James and james was Head Bot and Lily was Head girl or something??? That would be pretty cool i hope that is right anwyayz. wub.gif wub.gif blushing.gif blushing.gif

I was just wondering, could someone just cite page #'s, or at least which book, that tells the answers to these? People have kept on saying things like, "Well, we know MWPP were in Gryffindor" but I don't ever recall reading that. Also, several people say that James was a Chaser, contrary to the movie which said he was a Seeker. I reread the entire SS/PS to prove this, and I only found that McGonnagal said that James played Quiddich, but not a specific position. please help me.
jackryan411
Well, Rowling once said he was Aa Chaser...so I dunno. I think that MWPP were in Gryffindor and so was Lily, but that's just my opinon. There's no canonical evidence as of OotP.
keakealani
Thank you. I was just wondering, because people act as if there is proof in canon, and I didn't see that. I'm glad I'm not going insane though!
Visceria
Yeah, JKR said in the second Schoolastic interveiw that he was a Chaser.
And, we do know which house Lily was in. In one of the interview, someone asked which house she was in and JKR replied, "Gryffindor, naturally."
The others we can only assume, I suppose. smile.gif
Visceria
Unless she said he was a Chaser for Gryffindor...uh....I dunno. I'd have to look it up again....

LadyAkako
well most would assume the marauders were in gryffindor
because they were slamming on the slytherins..well mostly snape
they definetly dont seem like a hufflepuff gang
so that narrows it down to ravenclaw and gryffindor....ravenclaw would be slightly odd for them wouldn't it?they seem like the studious house and the marauders dont seem keen on studying.

something else that kind of bothers me though, ron says no one in any of the houses but slytherin have ever gone "bad" supposedly.
BUT at that time sirius black was supposed to be working for veoldemort or worked really even if it turned out to be peter in the end...one would assume all the marauders are in the same house and when the marauders were formed peter was part of them..so whats with that?
Visceria
Well, as many might say, just because you're in Gryffindor, home of the brave, doesn't mean that you don't have the potential etc. to "go bad". Same with Slytherins. I'm sure that most of them are pretty rotten people, not liking muggles thanks to their parents etc. and upbringing. Yet, not every one of them is in line with Voldemort.
I guess it depends on the person.
Though, you have a point.
Peter sure doesn't sound too much like a Gryffindor. Though, come to think of it, he was compared with Neville Longbottom, whom IS a Gryffindor... though doesn't ALWAYS act like a 'brave' person. *shrugs* tongue.gif
LadyAkako
but neville has a sweet air about him and even in the tidbit in OotP in Snape's memory Peter didn't seem like a sweet kid like Neville always strikes me as and Peter doesn't seem to have anything at all going for him in the heroics department hes a follower not a leader and neville has his moments where hes hanging in their with his courage however flaging it may be..
Brittany Black
In an interview with JKR she said that all of the Mauraders were in Gryffindor. I can't find which one it was, but I know I read it somewhere. I never even thought about them being in another house.
dreamin_athena
Well, we know that all of the Marauders would have to be in the same house in order to sustain such a good friendship. In an interview, JK said that Lily was in Gryffindor. If you remember in OOtP I think I remember reading that Sirius' ( crying.gif poor Sirus) said that his mother hated him partially because he was the only in the family to get into Gryffindor. In which case, they were all probably in Gryffindor. That would also explain why they were picking on Snape so much.
keakealani
I'm glad that some people keep up with the interviews, because I certainly don't! Thank you for your input, I was just wondering because some people's fics have the Marauders in different houses, like Remus in Ravenclaw and Sirius in Slytherin, and yet people say that they were all Gyrffindors. Thanx and I hope that you are right!
Muchacha
I am sorry, I am getting a little offtopic.gif here but what does MWPP mean!?!
Sorry, I was just wondering.
LilaBelle
i think it means moony wormtail padfoot and prongs...the mauraders' nicknames

In Draco Veritas (by Cassandra Claire) Lupin says something about that when Draco asks him something.....I think I can find the quote.....

QUOTE
Lupin nodded. "All right. Good luck on the game, then," he added, and surprised Draco by shaking his hand. "May the best team win."

"I thought you were a Gryffindor fan, professor," said Draco curiously. "I thought you were all in Gryffindor, you and Harry's dad and Sirius and..."

"Is that what you thought?" said Lupin mildly, and turned away. Draco looked for a moment after him with great curiosity -- what did he mean by that? -- before he turned and bolted for the Quidditch pitch, anxious not to be late.

There's a Slytherin Vs. Gryffindor match coming up. I thought this was interesting....considering Cassie's usually on top of things like that, but if it's in an interview, well, then.....*throws hands in the air* buh bye all fics with Sirius in Slytherin and Remus in Ravenclaw! *shrugs* But what do you guys think they woudl be in if they weren't in Gryffindor?

~Ryoko~
E. C. R. Potter
We already know they were in Gryffindor because of OotP. I'll get some direct quotes to help with my case here:

QUOTE
The truth was that Ron had reminded Harry forcibly of another Gryffindor Quidditch player who had had once sat rumpling his hair under this very tree. OotP, U.S.edition, pg. 704

This is of course the scene where Ron's hair ruffling reminds Harry of James doing the exact same thing in Snape's pensieve. So that alone pretty much establishes that James was a Gryffindor. Add to that the following quote:

QUOTE
"No one would have made me a prefect, I spent too much time in dentention with James.  Lupin was the good boy, he got the badge."
"I think Dumbledore might have hoped that I would be able to excersise some control over my best friends," said Lupin.  "I need scarecely say that I failed dismally." OotP, U.S. edition, pg. 170

This converstaion pretty much gives it straight into our faces that MWPP were in the same house, Gryffindor. The only reason why Lupin would be chosen as prefect over James and Sirius would be because they were in the same house and therefore in the same running. Still don't believe me, try reading chapter 28 of OotP: it's strongly hinted there that they were in the same house there too.

Well, I'm glad for your guys thoughts on this, and, as far as I can tell, we can draw the conclusion that the Marauders were in Gryffindor, although there is no proof except that James was in Gryffindor, and most likely Lily. If anyone cares to dispute that, by all means do so, but please quote like the others who have so generously looked it up.

Mod Note: This question has already been answered in this thread. If you wish to continue the discussion please tell me and I can reopen the thread but JKR has confirmed the answer to your question ~ Gems

Some how I dont think that Lily was in Griffindor.

She seeme dmore like a Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. I'm not sure if it says so in the book, but I dont think I read it (considering I've read 1 6 times, 2, 3 & 4 5 times and 5 3 times. And currently reading 2 again. wub.gif

So I would REALLY heart.gif to know. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I am going to stick with Ravenclaw until futher notice. She's just to smart for anything eles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, James Potter is the heir of Gryffindor so he would be in Gryffindor with out question. I don't think that the Mauraders could have built such a close friendship if they weren't in the same house.

Sorry for the short post

. . . James is the heir of Gryffindor?

Um . . . is this new information? Because though it's popular fanon, I don't think it's canon.

To add to the thread:
Remus, Sirius, and James were 100% for-sure in Gryffindor. However, we don't have confirmation on Peter.

Erm...I don't see how Peter could've been in gryffindor...didn't ron say something like "there isn't a wizard who went bad that wasn't in slytherin?" sooo doesn't that make him gryffindor...or maybe he'll turn good in the end?? OOOH, I wish july 16th would hurry and get here faster!
Rottenriku
I think theres proof that the others were in gryffindor. Im not sure (I don't have my book to check) but didn't Sirius say he was considered a house traitor because he wasn't in Slytherin like the rest of his family? I think he said something about being in Gryffindor, but excuse me if Im wrong.
And.. I think JK said he was a chaser on an interview, I forget if it mentioned it in the books.

EDIT - As for Peter being in Gryffindor, well, my opinion is that he would have never been friends with them if it was otherwise. See, its hard for me to see how he was friends with them in the first place, Peter was a follower. I can't picture him not being in there house.

But yes, it is true what Ron said about not a wizard going bad who wasn't in Slytherin -- but didn't he say that before they knew of Peter?
On the other hand, however, Ive never thought of Peter as brave.
Alex C. Potter
James, Sirius, and Remus were definitely in Gryffindor; JKR said this in her 2004 World Day Chat. She didn't, however, say is Peter was a Gryffindor. I think he probably was, though, because the 5th book gave me the impression that he was a bit of a loser, so I doubt the other three, particularly James and Sirius, would have become frinds with him if he wasn't in their house. Plus, Gryffindor is the only house that fits: he probably wasn'y a Slytherin, because seeing the way James acted around Snape, it's unlikely that he would've befriended Peter if that's the house he was in; since Hufflepuffs are supposed to be loyal and kind, and Peter is the exact opposite, I doubt that's the house he was in; as for Ravenclaw, even though he was an animagus, which I think you have to be pretty smart to become, book 5 made it seem as though he wasn't very bright. So if you look at it that way, Gryffindor is the only house that work; even though he seems like a coward, maybe he is braver than we give him credit for.

As for Ron's statement that all bad wizards are from Slytherin, I think that's more ignorance on his part than anything else. Since Ron is a Gryffindor, he probably wouldn't think that a bad wizard would come from his own house, especially since Gryffindor prides itself on its loyalty and bravery. Plus, he hates Slytherins, so his statement that the only bad wizards are from Slytherin is slightly biased. Ron's statement was most likely just his opinion, not a fact. It's quite plausible that a Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or maybe even a Hufflepuff could go bad as well.

~Alex
Magical Poof
I agree with Alex (C. Potter), Ron was probably just turning a blind eye to that fact, and anyone in any house could go bad. However, I think the problem was, as far as their knowledge was, back then, it was Sirius that had betrayed everyone. Most people would probably assume a Black was a Slytherin, considering their history.

As far a Peter goes, I do believe he was in Gryffindor. He does not seem to possess any great courage, but he does not have much loyalty, cunning, or intelligence, either. We don't even know if he was a Pure-blood either. Volemort had many unwilling followers, who were probably not all Purebloods. Perhaps Peter had the same case as Harry, and the hat did not know where to put him, and in the end, he told the hat he wanted to be in Gryffindor.
fascinations
There are different types of bravery, you know.

There's the bravery that you need to go rock climbing, sky diving and roller coaster riding. A daredevil bravery if you will, that means you're generally not afraid of much.

But then there's real bravery, bravery to stand up to people and speak your mind and the kind of bravery that is needed to try something new instead of taking the easy path. You can't say that someone wasn't brave because they didn't 'show it'. Peter probably has some strength in him that we don't know about---strength that wasn't quite as obvious as James, Sirius and Remus'.

Can someone please tell me what house Lily was in. I don;t think it says anywhere that she was a gryffindor.
Lunababy317
I think that in an interview once JKR said that Lily was in Gryfindor. But I'm not completely sure when or where I just remember reading something like that. Sorry that I am completely no help. smile.gif
