Okay, You all know how, in elite critical circles, Citizen Kane is generally considered to be The Greatest Film Of All Time? and how The Beatles are generally regarded as The Greatest Pop Group Of All Time? Well, I have been reading H/Hr fanfiction for some time, and the more I read, the pickier I became. I have become more and more obsessed with finding The Greatest H/Hr Fanfiction Of All Time. I wanted the sweetest, most intelligent, appropriatly funny, Canon based fiction that has ever been conceived out of a mind that isn't JKRs. Suddenly I realized: "why not go to the distinguished and critically acclaimed Portkey Boards?"
I have gathered so far only this, that the general consensus for Best H/Hr Author is the great Parker. However, a prolific author does not necessarily a great fanfic make (After all, Steven Spielberg did not direct Citizen Kane. Orson Welles was a relative unknown director when he made it.)!
So, O mighty community of Divine Harmony, tell me truly: What would most people figure to be The Greatest H/Hr Fanfiction Of All Time? Your own reccomendations would also be gratefully accepted.
Impress me! I dare you!

As for the greatest H/Hr fanfic....I'd really have to say that it's Harry Potter and the Circle's End by madscientist. Followed by Sunset/Sunrise Over Britain by Bobmin.

IMO, the greatest H/Hr fan fic ever is the
Paradigm of Uncertainty by Lori (you can find it on FictionAlley), and its sequels, The Show That Never Ends and The Hero With A Thousand Faces. HWTF isn't complete yet but the others are. The POUverse, as it's called, is post-Voldemort, and it begins about 8-10 years after Harry et al finish at Hogwarts. I'd call it action/adventure/angst with a lot of romance, and it's rated R for violence and some occasional sex. The H/Hr is built up nicely and gradually in POU, and takes off from there to become a very intense romantic relationship. You have to get past some previous R/Hr in the first series, but Lori handles it wonderfully.
Lori has a Yahoogroup that's got something like 20,000 members; I can't recall the name of the group offhand. She's also got a
LiveJournal which you can friend, where she occasionally posts cookies from her HP stories. Right now she's writing a long story based on Brokeback Mountain, but she swears she'll get back to writing HWTF soon. Oh...she's also got a literary agent and is hoping to get a sci-fi type novel published.

Parker's fics are available mostly thru a Yahoo! Group. At least I think that's how I got to read them. Those pieces are indeed excellent. I think a couple of them are floating somewhere in FictionAlley.
Uh, as for greatest H/Hr Fanfic, I think Lori's PoU and thereafter is one of the finest I've seen out there.

"PARKER" is parkergray. Her fics are here on Portkey, also on FictionAlley, and she's got a livejournal too, which I think is
http://parkergray.livejournal.com. She posts her H/Hr fics there too as well and saves them to her "memories" section. She writes ONLY "short stories" as far as I know. I think her longest story is maybe 10,000 words, and that's called THREE DAYS OF RAIN. She's brilliant. I'd cut off a finger (well, maybe not go that far...) to write half as well as she does.
Years of Rebellion is another of my favorites. It's incredibly detailed and full of emotion. Alas, it isn't completed. I'm reading FP's HP and the Last Horcrux here on Portkey, and that's likely to become a favorite as well.

What a shame. I really got hooked on that story and wondered why I stopped receiving updates from the Yahoo! group. Several stories written by authors like Fuyumi, Kirsten Elizabeth, Vicarious Leigh, and Cheering Charm have been quite superb.
If we consider AU plots, I want to throw in Twitch E. Littleferret's works as well.

I really love these fanfics, and whenever I want to read a fanfic or am really bored, I go to POU and read it again... It won third in the Felix Felias competition awhile back.
It is so great how she builds up on H/Hr, he actually doesnt kiss her until the 10th chapter or something but when he does OMG you just die, and the final battle with Voldie is so great.

I'm going to have to read these fics and make my own decision I think.
That's exactly what everyone should do. We all have different tastes. I, for example, have very little interest in "alternate universe" (AU) fics. To me the attraction of Harry Potter is in the universe that JKR created, which parallels the "muggle" world and which magical people can go in and out of at will. I'm not interested in anything set in 18th century France, or a thousand years from now, or on another planet. I don't even care much about the Marauders. I guess I don't know enough about either Lily or James to care about L/J fan fic. (Heresy, I know, on this site.) Some people like to read only fluffy romances. Others prefer fics that have a lot of angst, suffering, misunderstandings, etc. Some want to read only action/adventure with very little romance, and nothing worse than PG...you get the picture

So what one person considers a great story, another person might have no interest in reading. Personally I don't have time to read a lot of fan fic, so I mostly read authors whose work I already like, or fics that friends here or on LiveJournal have recommended to me. If I read everything that's available (even just in H/Hr) I'd never have time to write (OR DO?!) anything else myself

The links to the chapters for HWTF aren't working for some reason. I guess the other alternative would be to read chapters from the PoU yahoo group. I do believe that they are in there. I think if you do a 'Paradigm of Uncertainty' search, you'd be able to locate the group and join it.

I *love* the Draco trilogy. It's what made me a closet Draco/Hermione-tease fan (which still means I prefer Harry+Hermione).
And yes, don't feel bad about not getting into a popular fic. There are a couple of uber popular fics that I positively hate--and I don't mean "not getting into it", I mean really HATE--in spite of the humungous following. Not going to mention them.
The best fics... for me, at least: go to my Portkey profile
HERE and click on both my "Favorite Stories" list and my "Favorite Authors" list. The lists are a little bit different from one another, so you'd want to click on both, but those are the stories I'd recommend.
If you want to know details about my story preferences/peeves, highlight the quote box below. I don't want to throw this thread off-topic by blatantly turning it into a Fanfiction Pet Peeves.
QUOTE
My taste is a little bit strange.
(1)I positively HATE Super!Harry, unless it's cleverly written like in PoU and the Draco Trilogy;
(2)I dislike inane inner-musings (Ex. 'I wonder why I suddenly like looking at her hair,' thought Harry);
(3)I abhor "nice" Draco (like suddenly he's getting along with everyone famously because His Royal Berk-ness has "reformed");
(4)I enjoy the occasional sm*t... alright, not just occasionally;
(5)I prefer "realistic" to "romanticized". I mean, sure, I like romance a lot. What I hate is--for example: Harry and Hermione haven't seen each other in years and either Hermione, or Harry, or worse BOTH haven't slept with anybody else! That's like... HELLO.
(6)I like a story that goes with itself, not popular opinion. For example, you just know when the story says it's "H/Hr, R/L, D/G, T/R..." Honestly... not everyone has to get paired off. ONE pair in a story is perfectly alright. It's okay to mention other pairs in passing, or even a little bit more than passing, but to cram all those romances in there... it's not necessary. It's obviously to please the many, diverse-preference fans. In a story summary, the only thing that's important is:
The Title
The Summary of the Plot
Warnings
Portkey makes it possible for readers to know the important pairing at a glance. That's all readers have to know.
(7)I shall take this opportunity to mention that I absolutely HATE "Sunset Over Britain" (and its sequel).

Even though it is not on my list of favorites, I would have to vote for POU. It’s the most read, most talked about, but more importantly it was one of the first h/hr epics…it set the standard for future writers.
Some would say the paradise series is the “bible,” but that fic has way too much drama for me...it was like watching a Korean soap opera.
I’m a guy, I can’t visualize action very well in writing (rather watch anime for that), so I tend to lean towards drama/romance/angst/humor.
If I had to pick my 5 favorite h/hr fics
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered – Cheering Charm
Power Series – Vicarious Leigh
Just Friends – Amynoelle
Come Together - Granger
Forever Knight – DeliverMeFromEve (this one compelled me to donate)

Plus he’s from the windy city!!
I think Lori's PoU series could be it but I haven't read the third one (HWTF) yet.
I would like to suggest AngieJ/Ebony's Paradise fics:

Wow, what a question.
I've read a lot of H/Hr fic here, on FFnet and elsewhere, but the ones that comes to mind immediately are:
Harry Potter & The Years of Rebellion -
by Full_PensieveThis is easily one of, if not the favourite story I've read, re-read, and read again. The characterisation is wonderful, the story engrossing and it just has that certain...feel to it. I know Mike's had a lot of health issues lately, but I really hope he carries on writing it. Purely phenomenal, and if you haven't read it yet then you definitely should. You won't regret it.
Link:
http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/3807Harry Potter & The Psychic Serpent -
by B.L. PurdomI know the PS series is R/Hr and H/G as a whole, but the first book is pure H/Hr. The romance is perfectly done, the story engrossing and I find myself constantly going back to read it time and time again. It's not on PortKey, but the links to some PDFs and the Yahoo! Group are below. Really, seriously, if you do nothing else today then read Psychic Serpent. Just don't be disappointed (like I was) if you read the second and third books in the series.

by CassieVerteAn engrossing, but incredibly dark and angsty fic. If you like your pathos in spades, then this fic and it's successor, Harry Potter & The City of Woe are for you. It's extremely well written, and Wild Hermione is well portrayed. I don't like the D/Hr subtext or the H/G in it, but it's well worth a butchers.

Starving Author
Jul 3 2006, 08:36 PM
I'm not going to call any of these the greatest fic of all time because that is hugely debateable. I personally prefer long, novel-length fics (preferably at least 20 chapters) to one-shots or shorter stories, probably because that's how I started in HP fandom, reading the crazy long fics. Therefore, as amazing an author Parker might be (and I have yet to see, haven't read any of those to my knowledge), those fics wouldn't be in my top 5. My favorites have been mentioned, but they include:
1. Trouble in Paradise/Paradise Lost - read these twice, I love them. I adore the different angle it goes from...before reading these I had never seen (nor have seen since) a fic from that perspective. Angelina's not Harry or Hermione, she's not a best friend, she's not an enemy...she's just kind of a bystander who is casual friends and sort-of family to them.
2. The Draco Trilogy - Not sure if this counts as H/Hr, but these three are among my favorites ever. I may have to go back and reread...and I love the Draco overload, he's one of my favorite characters that JKR has so graciously created for us to play with. Like one of the previous posters, I secretly nurse a love for Draco/Hermione because of TDT. And now I'm off to stone myself, or perhaps just sweat myself of all the impurities.
3. Paradigm of Uncertainy et. al. - I put this one down a bit reluctantly. I read it after hearing it called the "H/Hr Bible" somewhere. I don't remember much about it, just that it was a bit too much for me. Still, a good fic, and one of the earliest longfics for our ship.
4. Magic Never Dies - Just read this recently and I *loved* it. I try to make a habit of not reading fics until they are complete because I hate waiting around for updates (what can I say?) but I can't wait for her to finish her other fics so I can read those as well.
Having looked through this thread, I think I have a lot of fics to go read

No. 4 Letters and Lunches by Old Crow
No. 3 Harry Potter and the Acceptance of Fate by Arya1.....almost didnt make it due to it being incomplete.
No. 2 The Lions of Gryffindor Series by the Madscientist
No. 1 Sunset/Sunrise over Britain series by Bobmin
Honorable Mentions going to: A Howling Wind by madscientist, An Effective abstraction by Muirin Cocan, Parallels by bobmin, Lines Crossed by Goldy, Flame of the Dragon by S.S. Idget, Harry Potter and the Lionheart of Gryffindor by Starslife, No Thanks by Old Crow, The Trials of a Hero by Garet Jax, Harry Potter and the Year of Resolve by bferbear, Time of Change by Olafr, Summer of Despair and Hope by Golasgil Sindar, and His Nearest and Dearest by Pixie Dust.

I will honestly admit that I'm not a fangirl of Lori's PoU trilogy. I thought the first one was pretty good, but once she got into what I call worlds above and beyond wizards, she lost my interest. The story was no longer about the characters I love, but the uber-cosmic grand scheme she invented. AngieJ is another like that; I started losing interest when the Grand Supersecret Conspiracy started showing up.
Some of my personal favorites:
Cheering Charm's "Tragic Little Hero" set of stories
Bingblot's "A Hero's Choice" (my fave, but practically anything by her)
Demosthenes' "One Simple Thing"/"A Simple Misunderstanding"
ChocolateFrogsForBreakfast's "Need and Want"
anything by Paracelsus
My current favorite WIPs are "Fixing Harry" by Lynney and "Restoring Hope" by Paracelsus.

Wow - i see i have a lot of reading to catch up on
I love the PoU series, and adore VicariousLeigh's work...Lynney's Magic Never Dies appeared at just the right time for this H/Hr shipper

I'd like to add a few more wonderful authors to this thread...
1. Kaze ..she was writing this fic called "Magnolias" (here on Portkey)...but it's still unfinished. It was written in a pre-HPB world : sniff:
2. Jane99's wonderful wip (again at Portkey) ... HP and the Eye of the Storm... again, very well written. She last updated in September; its up to chap 22.
3. Another one is Musca's "Voiceless" (again at Portkey).
cheers!

1) Forever Knight by Adamanteve
2) I consider all of Twitch Littleferret's stories as my fave since her vision of Harry is the exact replica of my ideal man.
I love
Forever Knight... in fact, I just finished it last night. I simply loved it.
Twitch's stories are so
addicting. I love her Harry too.

I can't wait until
More Important Things is updated. MIT love!

My personal favorites-
Sound of a Kiss and Afterwards, by Genvieve
The Magic of Firelight, by Stietoe
One Simple Thing and A Simple Misunderstanding, by Demosthenes
That said, I've never understood why everyone like PoU series so well- it was never even on my top 10. Anyone want to explain that to me?

Also there are plenty of fics that are now AU written after books 1-5 of 6th year that were favourites pre-HBP but I'm a bit of a cannon fanatic so they have been ruined for me by HBP.
Yeah...it is the same for me....HBP kind of ruined my favorite stories that are based from Books 1-5...Anyways, I loved the following, though not in order...I can't seem to decide.
The Mirror by Emily North:
http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/3923 It is set on their 7th year and seems to be AU after HBP. This is more Hermione-centered and has lots of Draco-Hermione friendship on it...but if you like angst.
Into a Darkened Room by Demosthenes:
http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/2963 This is set immediatley after Hogwarts...lots of angst...and brilliant Hermione.
Here at the End by Ahn Na Blue:
http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/4798 This won third on the Felix Felicis challenge...set in their 7th year and with HBP spoilers, so really, it was a great read!!!!
Harry Potter and the Knights of Walpurgis by IslandPrincess1:
http://fanfiction.portkey.org/story/5669/17 This is set on their 7th year and has HBP spoilers. This is a great 7th year rendition of HPDH, IMHO. It has 17 chapters, now!
I am stuck among these fantastic writers since I love all their fics: Twitch E. Littleferret, DeliverMeFromEve, lorien829, Harrys Mistress, Lynney, kyc639 and hhragent27 (I loved her "Twist through Time" story which she has finished in FF.net but just started posting here)....
There are so many fics by so many authors out there that are really in my bookmarks already so I am sure I have missed so many others. Anyways, that's about it!!!!

I read half of the first chapter and thought it was...ok, I guess. Don't see what all the hype's about. Maybe I'll try again.
Anybody here ever read "Moonlight Sonata" and "A New Moon". They go together, like part 1 and part 2.
They're written by Sea of Fire and can be found on fanfiction.net. They're awesome!!!

I'm one of those that never really got into PoU. I read up to the Chapter 10 and then...meh. I didn't really have a connection with her OCs or Harry and Hermione. As for some of the best...
1)Magic Never Dies by Lynney: I'm going to have to add that to my favorites list. Wwll-written, fantastically paced, suspenseful...Great fic all around. It's what I strive for.
2)More Important Things by Twitch E. Littleferret: Some people hate this fic, but I can't see why. Her characters aren't Sue-ish or glorified, they're real. I can see them like this during the war if they were allowed to cuss. They have flaws, make mistakes, grow form them. Awesome, is all of her other work.
3)Bearings by MattD12027: He's new, but man, can he write! I'm loving it so far and I can't wait for the next chapter. I love his Hermione. Did I mention Grown-Up!Hermione is a favorite?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Argh! I can't find it!!! I remember having trouble finding it when it was a WIP, but I just tried everything. I'll look all the way through the entire H/Hr stories if I have to. I remember her stories are all on her L_J (can't remember the name now, of course) and she then posts on ff. Crap, let me go see if I can't find them "the hard way".
Oooh also my new absolute and forever FAVOURITE Fanfic is Harry Potter and the fifth element... it is AU as of HBP but it's so good that it validates all of my dislike/critiscm of HBP... I wrote in a review that JKR should read it and shrivel in shame at the drivel of HBP and it's the first time EVER a fanfic has had that effect on me. Unfortunatly it's a WIP...
