Modly Side: Hmm...I think this is better suited for Professor Binn's Library.
*moves*Ah...why did I sign up as opposed to how I found this place...very good question.

*goes through reasons*
--Not the first reason, because I found the fanfics
after I found the forums.
--Bored? Eh...maybe.
--No friend told me to come here, although I have told some of
my friends to come here.

--The gallery wasn't even up yet when I joined.
--I was still extremely shy about my writing, so that's definitely not the reason.
--I can't draw worth a d***.

So, not using the "other" option, I guess I'd just have to say that I was a normal HP fan looking for a place to discuss my favorite ship.

I had never joined a forum before, but I'm glad that I made this one my first, because it's been a blast and I love it here.
Seriously, there's no better place than PK.

Hehe.

That's exactly backwards. I joined because of the fanfiction, and I found the forums later, which have taken a bigger foothold as of late. Anyway, I can't wait to see the results of this poll as it gets more mature.
And
green eyes, you say you're from Canada's Venice. Is that P.E.I., by chance, or are you on the other side?

I chose 'Other,' so now, let me get started on this long-story-short.
Anyway, I was looking for a place to find some more fanfics, and I just kinda stumbled onto PK. That same day I went under 'Talk,' and found the forums. I kept going for the next couple of days, reading the theories, the challenges, the posts, and being the talkitive person I am, it was EXTREMELY hard for me to read and not join into the fun, and so the rest was history...
It took me a while to figure out how to join, (this is the first site I've joined, and I'm glad it's my first too, PK rocks!!

) but I eventually joined under the username, Harmony4ver, then, about a month later, I decided to have it changed to Elektra, since I always liked that name better than my real one, but someone already had that name, curses.

So I came up with Panther, since I wanted something simple that held a special place in my heart. Panther becuz I said somewhere else on PK that I'd wanna be a panther animagus, and I've always liked Panthers, so, there you have it.
Then, just a few days ago, I registered in the fanfic section under Amber Eyz, and soon afterwards, sent my author application.
*Anxiously awaits e-mail from the ficmods*
So there is my PK story. Hmm, right now I'm at around 190 posts, and I only joined a month ago, huh.
Anyone else???

Heh, my reasons are the same as green eyes. I've been lurking and thinking of joining for awhile. Except I came in search of those optimistic people to make me feel better after HBP. Because I'm certainly not one of them.

I remember when i first got into fanfiction back in december. I have this frined, quite frankly she is a bit creepy. she writes her own fanfictions and does illustrations for them but that are all slash and yoai not to mention bondage. (*shudder* it was so difficult looking through her sketchbook because you never knew when you would see one effeminate man tied up while being touched by another effeminate man.) so she told me about fanfiction. since Harry Potter was my only real fandom i just read that.
i started noticing these people saying. "in response to a portkey challange" or "what so and so said on portkey was really true". i had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. it wasnt until someone actually said something like "go to portkey.org " it was because of Half blood prince but dont exactly remember what. i cruised the forums and read some fanfics but it was like a week or two after that when i finally joined so that i could respond to a post here on the forums.

I found portkey when the book-that-must-not-be-named came out and we were discussing it on my regular forum hunting grounds. Someone mentioned the Heron ship

while someone else said that all the evidence pointed to Harmony and pointed to this site. I have been addicted ever since. I tried to give up for a day, but had withdrawl symptoms.

suprisingly i found out on mugglenet - i was on their forums. I had posted on their section about H/Hr - how emerson shouldn't be biased and put down real facts because that was the only ship he slated while writing about it's foundations! I got told by a Heron or Harmonian can't remember so long ago to this site! I LOVE IT ! ! ! hehe. I told every H/Hr shipper i know - not really many but anyhow that this site is fantastic!

I was reading "The Lost Wizard" by wetback in MUGGLENET. I read something from her ANs about continuing her story at Portkey because she was having issues with the mods in Mugglenet.
I guess Mugglenet has its virtues.

I found Portkey through her and I was flabbergast that there are all these wonderful stories about H+Hr. Twas heaven. After HBP came out, I needed a place to comiserate.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Portkey had a forum! The HP Gods are good. I joined Kindred Spirits and its just been a joy being with people who were still willing to sail the ship in spite of the anvil-shaped holes in the hull and on deck.

Signed up to Portkey, or Kindred Spirits?

I joined PK shortly after (might have even been
before) OotP was published, but had known of it for a couple of months before that. It explains the 'low' author ID I've got
I believe it was Leslie (The Heir of Paravel) whom first mentioned PK to me, as she'd been planning to upload Summer In Cornwall here for sometime... when she did, I followed suit and loyally reviewed every single chapter. She convinced me to upload my own stories here.
As for the forum... can't exactly remember the reason behind it anymore since it was just over 2 years ago now
Things have changed a bit since my last visit, and HBP hasn't made me angry in the slightest - there's always been the chance that H/Hr will make it into canon at some point, so now it seems the last chance we've got is book 7. I don't really mind what happens anymore because as a firm believer in the HMS Pumpkin pie, I'll always have PK so's I can indulge my delusions.

Aaah the age old question!
Waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in 2003 I was just browsing the net and I decided to Google for Harry/Hermione friendly Forums, and a link for Portkey popped up and I clicked.
Then I found myself here and I started exploring.
I spent a few hours just lurking around, looking at all the different posts, ideas and thoughts and I thought "Wow. This is a really great site!", I registered and now, here I am over 2 years later just as excited and dedicated to Harry Potter and Harry/Hermione as I was all the way back then.
I'm so happy I googled in 2003 back when I was a fandom newbie.

Before I signed up, I was new to the fandom (since January) and never cared about shipping. I saw the movies and they seemed to be missing something, but I still had not read the books. I floated around the net and discovered fanfiction; Portkey was one of the first three I found. I would come here from time-to-time to read and check out the gallery...I had no idea there was a forum and I never visited any. Between April and May, I read all five books, and saw right away the possibility of a love triangle between the Trio.
I learned about the infamous interview over a month after HBP and saw many sites and LJ accounts go underground because of it and the behavior of anti-H/Hr shippers. I saw somewhere that Portkey had a a forum and decided to check it out. I saw the negativity and read the essays favoring the various ships to see what was the fuss. That was when I noticed my hidden preference for H/Hr...after HBP. I preferred the subtle, slowly developing relationship between the two equals than the silly bickering of R/Hr. In reality, R/Hr would have already dated long ago and broken up and I believe JKR knows this as well. I decided to sign up and show that even after HBP, some of us do see H/Hr and will support it.
I read her past interviews and noticed the misdirection she placed in them, and since she wants things to be a surprise, unless she states with firm words on her website (as she done with other ships), I place zero value on the interviews. The only valuable items I got from her interviews was "Harry needing Hermione badly", Ginny's real name, and Molly's maiden name...LOL!

Oooh, goodness.

Why DO people join the best HP forum? *pretends to think long and hard*
I joined just a few months ago. I had finished HBP some days/weeks beforehand and then I read the infamous interview. I wanted to cry or scream or something. I decided to search for sites where H/Hr was appreciated, and came across places like Together As One, HarryLovesHermione, and a couple of LJ communities. Somewhere I clicked a link that brought me over here, and the rest is history.

I found Portkey back in 2003, I think, just before OotP came out. I had been introduced to Harry Potter's world just that Christmas by a friend, before resisting it for many years... since I thought it was for kids. Well, was I surprised!
Anyway, I was reading a H/Hr ficlet over at ff.net and the author mentioned Portkey in her author's notes. I was completely clueless about HP fansites back then, and decided to have a look... and here I've been ever since then, lurking.
So, pretty common story, I guess...

Cool thread.
I was never a shipper, never visited fansites, so I wasn't aware of the big following Harry/Ginny had. So HBP confused the hell out of me...I didn't see it coming. I wanted to talk about it but I've lost my "man card" so many times by bringing up harry potter or period pieces with my friends that I decided to go online to see what others thought. Found Mugglenet via JKRowling's site, I was stunned...a lot people wanted Harry/Ginny. I was going back to my own world, my own interpretation of the books, until I read a h/hr shipper post about them "sailing" in "fanfiction." I was like "What's fanfiction"? Found my way to Portkey, been reading nonstop ever since.

Oh I love that about your "man card". I wonder if that is my brother's problem. I know I try to get him to have Harry Potter chats with me since I know he has read the books but oh no I think he is afraid to admit he likes the books. Ah well.

I don’t remember how I found Portkey, probably by Googling “Harry/Hermione.”
I didn’t really get into shipping until after I saw GoF in December of last year. I’d been a casual reader of the books (borrowing from a friend) and leaned towards H/Hr but wasn’t as “focused’ as I am now. When I saw Harry stare at Hermione at the Yule Ball I was hooked (in the movie). My thought was why would they make this big moment (complete with swelling music) out of Harry noticing her if they weren’t going to be a couple in the end? Even with the other ships going on at the ball (H/C, Hr/K and the R/Hr argument), that moment was “it” for me. And then I wanted to read the book again to see if it happened the same way.
I went out and bought Books 1-5 in paperback and re-read them all backwards, looking for H/Hr clues and subtext. Then I went online to see if there were others who saw it the way I did. And sure enough, I did.
BTW, I’m really glad I wasn’t around when the IoD hit last summer and am glad to have gotten into the fandom after all of the dust had settled more or less.

Well I came here to read the fanfiction and I never really did anything else here but that for a few years. After HBP came out I branched off into the forum mostly because I needed to see if anyone else thought the book was horrible. The reason why I signed up is because I support every couple that has each board. Harry/Hermione are my OTP. Ron/Luna are very cute and I thought it was actually possible and maybe still has a chance after HBP. James/Lily...well of course I support them!

And Draco/Ginny...to be honest I never thought of them as a couple but once I read fanfics and became open-minded, I was very interested in them together.

Like Hermione's Twin, I found the forum

How did I find portkey?
Well I became a Potterfan after I saw the first movie. I really liked the story and instead of waiting for the next movie to come out, I decided to read the books to find out what happened next.
Well, imagine my suprise when I actually liked the books. (I hate to read books. I'm one of those people where the story has to catch me from the first chapter or otherwise I don't read it. I also like history books and books about symbolism, but that another story all together.) So I read all 4 books and I really like the H/Hr dynamic. I just found myself drawn to H/Hr for some reason.
Then I wanted to find out what other fans were thinking so I did some internet searching and found the FictionAlley forums. I liked reading people's opinions and I was suprised to discover that 'everyone' suspected OBHWF. I myself thought it was too obvious and simple. I didn't think Harry would die at the end and I didn't see why the author would develop the 'sidekicks' romance starting with GoF onward when she hadn't even started on the heros.
I found myself wanting to talk to fellow H/Hr shippers about the series, but it became very difficult because we had no formal website. If I remember correctly the original founders of the H/Hr ship felt that we didn't need an 'official' website.
I was desperate and I was sick of listening to R/hr shippers ramble on and have their places to talk.
My life was saved when portkey opened. It became a website where H/Hr shippers could come and chat without mockery from other ships. I could read about peoples ideas and theories, which was nice because I tended to agree with them.
So I came for the forums and then the fanfiction. It's probably because I'm an older member. I mean look how small my number is. Three digits. There wasn't much fanfiction here originally and now we have some of the best H/hr fanfiction on the web.

I think I found Portkey by reading some fanfiction on fanfiction.net but the author posted a comment at the bottom of having the story on portkey as well so I decided to check it out and here I am. Portkey is just about the only Harry Potter fansite I go to anymore.
HA HA! This sounds almost exactly like my story!!!
My husband bought me a book called
Mapping the World of Harry Potter for Mother's Day (I love him!) and one of the chapters talked about the world of fan-fiction, and mentioned aff.net (adultfanfiction.net). We had just bought a new computer (we're a bit behind the times) so I decided to see what it was all about. Anyway, I found "Forever Knight" on aff and when I went to write a review (a stellar one, at that), I saw somebody else had written that they had seen the story on Portkey. I then googled "Portkey" and VOILA, the rest is history!
So, when my husband complains about me talking about Harry Potter NON-STOP, I just remind him that it's really all his own fault...

I guess I'm kind of like
sartone on this... didn't used to be a shipper of anyone.
I didn't really read the books for the romance and thought the r/hr that I saw was kind of tongue in cheek, to be honest.
But HBP sort of left me less than satisfied and I started seeking out fanfiction.
I already was into a few other fandoms, but kind of slowed down while I was at college...not enough time. But by the time I started seeking it out, the fandom was huge, of course, and I started at fanfiction.net. There were SO many stories, most of the ones I happened to click on sucked, and it was way too much to go through.
I remember reading some Hr/R to start with. I didn't finish a single one. SO boring, so out of character; people were turning Ron into this great boyfriend and it was all so treacly and nauseating. Now, I always kind of figured JKR was heading for R/Hr in canon, but I always thought H/Hr would be a better couple. So I looked for H/Hr on ff.net, and found some good ones. There's not that much by comparison to h/r, but even what there was, was too much to go through. And there was so much crap.
So much crap, people.
So to shorten this way-too-long post, I googled Harry Hermione romance fanfiction and Portkey came up, and it was like it was just for me. Just the ship I like, and so user friendly. And there are only a couple other places where I've found stories as good. Some of the best writers post here. And the forums, and essays, it's been so much fun reading theories and plot discussions from a harmony perspective.
Love Portkey. So glad I found it.

I started reading Harry Potter when I was in the 5th grade. I wasn't really a BIG fan but I am a bookworm and honestly the HP series were the best books around so I grew to love them. I kinda lost my love for them when the movies come out coz you know, I know how movies tend to leave some "lovable" parts out so I hardly watched any movie more than twice and I just read the rest of the books just to know what all the fuss was about. (BTW, OoTP and HBP p*ssed me off at first but not anymore because I became a H/Hr shipper! Thank you Portkey! Now, I am totally in LOVE

with those two books because of all the shippy H/hr moments!

)
It's kind of al ong story how I found Portkey. I was at YouTube looking for cool videos to watch and I went through all my favorite videos like Disney Princesses, Lord of the Rings, A few animes and etc. Then I wondered, hmm, what about Harry Potter and then I clicked on a random video and it turned out to be a H/Hr vid and I loved it coz it was so cute! I never realized how much chemisty dan and emma had on screen as harry and hermione!
I looked up the name... KateJ. I went to her site, www.harryloveshermione.com and then after browsing her site, found out she had a fanfiction at Portkey.org and *BOOM*

Tadaa!!! Here I am!!!
I'm proud to be here! I love it here! Thanks to you all I found my new obssession as a H/Hr shipper!
