For the time being, I'll allow for this post to stay. It's not really an essay, but it does re-iterate the bond between Harry and Hermione. ~MK
This thread belongs in the H/Hr Main section since it is not an essay. - Sarmi
Some of my favorite Harry/Ginny shipping moments from OOTP.
1-He caught a brief glimpse of a gloomy high-ceilinged, twin-bedded room, then there was a loud, twittering noise, followed by an even louder shriek, and his vision was completely obscured by a large quantity of very red hair-Ginny had thrown herself onto him in a hug that nearly knocked him flat, while Ron's tiny owl, Pigwidgeon, zoomed excitedly round and round their heads.
2-Only the house-elf's attitude of creeping servility looked convincing. With a grin at the thought of what Ginny would say if she could see the statue of the elf, Harry turned his money bag upside down and emptied not just ten Galleons, but the whole contents into the pool at the statue's feet.
3-The door banged open. Ginny came tearing into the room, her cheeks flushed and her hair flying. There was an envelope in her hand.
"Did you-did you get-?"
She spotted the badge in Harry's hand and let out a shriek.
"I knew it!" she said excitedly, brandishing her letter. "Me too, Harry, me too!"
"No," said Harry quickly, pushing the badge back into Ron's hand. "It's Ron, not me."
"It-what?"
"Ron's prefect, not me," Harry said.
"Ron," said Ginny, her jaw dropping. "But...are you sure? I mean-"
She turned red as Ron looked around at her with a defiant expression on his face.
"It's my name on the letter," he said.
"I..." said Ginny, looking thoroughly bewildered. "I...well...wow! Well done, Ron! That's really-"
4-He dashed from the room, leaving Harry and Ginny alone. For some reason, Harry found that he did not want to look at Ginny.
5-And as he thought this, the scar on his forehead burned so badly that he clapped his hand to it.
"What's up?" said Ginny, looking alarmed.
"Scar," Harry mumbled. "But it's nothing...It happens all the time now...."
None of the others had noticed a thing... (emphasis mine)
6-"...Listen, you can help me if you like, it's quite fun, I'm getting better, I can do patterns and bobbles and all sorts of things now."
Harry looked into her (Ginny's) face, which was shining with glee, and tried to look as though he was vaguely tempted by this offer.
"Er...no, I don't think I will, thanks," he said. "Er-not tomorrow. I've got loads of homework to do...."
And he traipsed to the boys' stairs, leaving her looking slightly disappointed behind him.
7-He imagined trying to conceal from Ginny that he had received T's in all his O.W.L.s and immediately resolved to work harder from now on.
8-"Harry," she (Ginny) said timidly, "don't you see? This...this is exactly why we need you....We need to know what it's r-really like...facing him...facing V-Voldemort."
It was the first time she had ever said Voldemort's name, and it was this, more than anything else, that calmed Harry.
9-...he was halfway out of his seat, intending to hurry upstairs for his Invisibility Cloak when, not for the first time, a voice very much like Ginny's whispered in his ear: reckless.
10-...Harry looked sideways at Ginny. "You know what these remind me of?"
"No, what's that?"
"The Death Eater's scars. Voldemort touches one of them, and all their scars burn, and they know they've got to join him."
"Well...yes," said Ginny quietly. "That is where I got the idea...but you'll notice I decided to engrave the date on bits of metal rather than on our members' skin...."
"Yeah...I prefer your way," said Harry, grinning, as he slipped his Galleon into his pocket...
11-"Is it Cho?" she (Ginny) asked in a businesslike way. "Did she corner you after the meeting?"
Numbly surprised, Harry nodded. Ron sniggered, breaking off when Hermione caught his eye.
...
"Did you kiss?" asked Ginny briskly.
...
Harry looked from Ron's expression of mingled curiosity and hilarity to Ginny's slight frown, and nodded.
"HA!"
...
Ginny gave Ron a look of deep disgust and returned to her letter.
12-"And it might have been a good idea to mention how ugly you think I am too," Ginny added as an afterthought.
"But I don't think you're ugly," said Harry, bemused.
Ginny laughed.
13-Then, quite abruptly, she said "but you shouldn't have seen this at all, Harry."
"What?" he said, taken aback.
"You're supposed to be learning how to close your mind to this sort of thing," said Ginny, suddenly stern.
"I know I am," said Harry. "But-"
"Well, I think we should just try and forget what you saw," said Ginny firmly. "And you ought to put in a bit more effort on your Occlumency from now on."
Harry was so angry with her that he did not talk to her for the rest of the day, which proved to be another bad one.
14-"Haven't we got a counter jinx for this?" Fudge asked Umbridge, impatiently, gesturing at Marietta's face. "So she can speak freely?"
"I have not managed to find one," Umbridge admitted grudgingly, and Harry felt a surge of pride in Ginny's jinxing ability.
15-"That was a really horrible trick of Ginny Weasley's," said Cho fiercely. "She should have told us she'd jinxed that list-"
"I think it was a brilliant idea," said Harry coldly. Cho flushed and her eyes grew brighter.
"Oh yes, I forgot-of course, if it was darling Ginny's idea-"
16-He also suspected that part of his mind-the part that often spoke in Ginny's voice-now felt guilty on the occasions it strayed down that corridor ending in the black door, and sought to wake him before he could reach journey's end.
17-Harry agreed to test Ginny after lunch on Sunday but regretted it almost at once. She was very agitated and kept snatching the book back from him to check that she had gotten the answer completely right, finally hitting him hard on the nose with the sharp edge of Achievements in Charming.
"Why don't you just do it yourself?" he said firmly, handing the book back to her, his eyes watering."
18-Even through his anger and impatience Harry recognized Ginny's offer to accompany him into Umbridge's office as a sign of solidarity and loyalty.
19-"What do you mean, 'in there'?" demanded Ginny, jumping down from the bottom step and sounding much angrier than the occasion warranted. "There isn't any 'in there,' it's just an archway, there's no room for anybody to be there-Harry, stop it, come away-"
She grabbed his arm and pulled, but he resisted.
"Harry we are supposed to be here for Sirius!" she said in a high-pitched, strained voice.
20-"RUN!" Harry yelled. ...he seized a handful of Ginny's robes and dragged her forward...
21-...a hand caught him by the shoulder; he heard Ginny shout "Stupefy!" and the hand released him at once.
22-"Well done, Ha-"
But the Death Eater Ginny had just struck dumb made a sudden slashing movement with his wand from which flew a streak of what looked like purple flame. It passed right across Ginny's chest; she gave a tiny "oh!" as though of surprise and then crumpled onto the floor where she lay motionless.
"GINNY!"
Harry fell to his knees beside her as Neville crawled rapidly toward her from under the desk...
A whine of panic inside his head was preventing him thinking properly. He had one hand on Ginny's shoulder, which was still warm, yet did not dare look at her properly. Don't let her be dead, don't let her be dead, it's my fault if she's dead....
"Ginny," Harry said at once, shaking her as the baby-headed Death Eater blundered out of sight again. "Ginny, wake up...."
...
Neville groped for Ginny's wrist.
"Dat's a pulse, Harry, I'b sure id is...."
Such a powerful wave of relief swept through Harry that for a moment he felt light-headed.
Now, can you not see why Harry and Ginny are perfect for one another? And those aren't all the moments in the Order of the Phoenix that show support for the Harry/Ginny ship! There are even MORE! Oh, wait, hang on...JK Rowling is calling. I'll have to answer...Just a second.
"Yes, Jo?"
"I'm afraid you made a mistake in this essay, Caina."
"A mistake? How?"
"None of those things happened between Harry and Ginny. Those are all things that happenened between Harry and Hermione."
"Oh my God! <smacks self on the forehead> Thank you for correcting me. I see your point. So sorry. Let me go back and put things right by replacing Ginny with Hermione."

That was fantastic. You had me going there for a split second when I was reading the post. I thought I 'd lost my mind there for a second. But, very clever. I am positive that if those scenes had played out like you wrote between either Harry and Ginny or even Ron and Hermione they would have been considered totally shippy. But, when they are between Harry and Hermione they are considered anything but shippy. Great way to flip the script and show what is truly between the lines of the interaction with Harry and Hermione.

WOAH! When I saw that, for a second I was like "Wrong site, dear." Awesome post. I still wonder sometimes how people can think that Hermione is "Just a friend." ROCK ON!
Oh, just FYI.

"Oh, thank god, it was supposed to be funny. HaHaHa."
You need to show that to some R/Hr and H/G shippers sometime. That'll really show them.
Maybe it's just me, but why does it seem like R/Hr and H/G shippers turn a blind eye to these sorts of things? My Mom has seen all the movies and read all the books, (which were mine). She says she'd like H/Hr to happen, but she says based on the "evidence" R/Hr will happen. I still cant understand it.
I guess I'll just have to convert her 100%

I think it has a lot of it is what they want to see or what they expect to see so they can't see anything else. Also because of JKR's platonic quote makes them over look everything as a sign of a deep friendship or write it off even if it was enough to catch their attention. Even though she did make the quote that they had time to change their minds about their feels and the platonic quote is quite old.
I doubt you can convince your mother other wise but it is JKR's job to do so in the end. Have faith in H/Hr since there isn’t any evidence of Hermione liking Ron other then a friend that can stand up if you look at it in context.

Brilliant post Caina. If JKR had written it like this than I would be a Harry/Ginny shipper but luckily she has not and Hermione is the girl that is interacting with Harry on all those occasions.
It would be fun to see a choclateers reaction to this.

Jun 16 2005, 06:19 AM
This thread of yours has really made me realize something: that when you are a shipper of two particular characters, you dismiss any other evidence that may sink your ship.
For instance, had JKR switched out Harry's name and put Ron's name instead, R/Hr shippers would have read all of those scenes in the book and be squeeing so loudly that you could probably hear them for miles. Had JKR done what
you did, and put Ginny in all of those scenes instead of Hermione, all of the H/G shippers would read them and be squeeing so loudly that...well, you get the picture.
Oh...but, since these scenes happened between Harry and Hermione, there is just
no way they can be considered shippy at all! They just prove how much Harry and Hermione are like brother and sister...and how their relationship is strictly platonic and always will be, and blah blah blah.
Very good post. It made me smile.

LOL you just brought up something very true and disturbing. They really do have a double standard!
Which reminds me, Herons pull the exact same thing when it comes to the movies. When Hermione hugs Harry charmingly at the end of CoS, it's "platonic"...but when Hermione hugs Ron in PoA, they're like OMG OMG OMG!! SQUUUEEEEEE!!

Speaking of the movies, the two scenes in CoS where Harry first stroked Hermione's hand, and then later on held it while she was petrified were viewed as sort of a brotherly-sisterly act. But then, in the third movie, Hermione grabbed Ron's hand, and all the R/Hr's nearly passed out with excitement. But technically, it wasn't his
hand but more his
arm, and she only did it because she was worried about Harry. Honestly, I think she would have grabbed
Malfoy's arm too, had
he been standing next to her instead of Ron - and judging from the disgusted look on her face, it might as well have been Malfoy.
And then, in the latter part of PoA, Harry and Hermione spent a lot of time holding hands while running in the forest, and clinging to each other. This, of course, meant absolutely nothing, and they were only clinging to each other and holding hands so they wouldn't get separated from each other. But take Hermione out of those scenes and throw in Ron instead, does anyone really think that he and Harry would have held hands and hugged? Probably not. Or, better yet, put Ron in those scenes instead of Harry and - you've got it - SQUUUUEEEEEE!

Brilliant! That is precisely what I try to do in debates: I replace another character's name (Ron/Hermione/Ginny) with the one they prefer into a h/hr moment and it gets them right away because it's true; some are so blinded by the idea of "h/hr" that they immediately dismiss all the evidence. Right away, they have no response because they realize just how true it sounds. It's also great in convincing h/hr shippers themselves, as you just demonstrated.
Anyway, great job.

You forgot to spoof the part where Hermione replaces Cho in Harry's dream...
Yah. I mean, I'm not caina, but I'd like to answer to it anyway.
QUOTE
Harry dreamed he was back in the DA room. Cho was accusing him of luring her there under false pretences; she said he had promised her a hundred and fifty Chocolate Frog Cards if she showed up. Harry protested...Cho shouted, 'Cedric gave me loads of Chocolate Frog Cards, look!' And she pulled out fistfulls of Cards from inside her robes and threw them into the air. Then she turned into Ginny, who said,'You did promise her, you know, Harry...I think you'd better give her something else instead...how about your Firebolt? And Harry was protesting that he could not ...
Do you hear them squee?..!
You know, I tried a similar technique while debating a long time ago, I offered the Chocolateers to replace ( in the 'H/G' moments) Ginny with Neville -it works, and equally Hermione with Neville in Hamony moments- it doesn't, not always.
Look:
QUOTE
Neville's lip trembled and he suddenly dashed at Harry and threw his arms around him.
'Neville!'
'Harry-you're a great wizard, you know.'
'I'm not as good as you', said Harry, very embarassed, as he let go of him.
'Me!' said Neville. <snip as to make it more believable>
'There are more important things-frienship and bravery- and-oh Harry-be careful!'
QUOTE
'Neville!' Harry muttered, sprinting to him and dropping to his knees. 'Neville! Don't be dead! Please don't be dead!' He flung his wand aside, grabbed Neville's shoulders and turned him over. His face was white as marble, and as cold, yet his eyes were closed, so he wasn't petrified. But then he must be...
'Neville, please wake up,' Harry muttered desperately, shaking him. Neville's head loled hopelessly from side to side.

We're trying to prove that all the Harry/Ginny scenes were not really romantic in context, because you can replace Ginny with Neville in those scenes

caina, you brought a smile to my face and gave me ammunition for the next time some of my R/Hr riends try to pull this sort of tactic on me.

That post makes brilliant sense since it forces other shippers to see what we are seeing. Thanks again for the awesome post.

About that hug in the movies, all they talk about is the part where Hermione hugs Ron. Ever noticed you NEVER see them go on about how
Harry hugs
Hermione? Firstly, none of that happened in the books, and the books are canon, not the movies, but if you're going to look at the movies for squee-age, then look at Harry hugging Hermione, Harry and Hermione's touching and interacting throughout the end of the movie, how about Harry shielding Hermione from Lupin-wolf? How about the ride on Buckbeak? But the biggest H/Hr moment of all was when Hermione went to comfort Harry by BREAKING AWAY from Ron's efforts to hold her back. That could be, if you ask me, one of the things that JK was talking about Cuaron foreshadowing. Hermione pulls away from Ron to go to Harry and comfort him. Had that been Ginny we would never hear the end of it, but it happens between H/Hr and "blaaaaah that's just platonic" is all you hear. If Ron had replaced Harry the Internet would have been blasted with "See! Look! Look! It's RIGHT THERE!". You know what really gets me? Is that R/Hr H/G shippers seem to honestly think this story somehow revolves around the Weasleys. They put waaaaaay too much emphasis on that family instead of where it SHOULD be and that's on Harry Potter (whom the series is named after) and his true love, Hermione.

I totally agree. R/H and H/G shippers can be like that. I'm honestly getting tired of it. I mean, I'm a H/H shipper, but I'm willing to admit that when Hermione hugged Ron after Buckbeak's execution, I was a little uncomfortable. Same with the "Do you want to get a bit closer?" thing (but only because it totally came out of nowhere

).When Hemione grabbed Ron's hand/arm/whatever, it didn't bother me because she was worried about HARRY! I mean DUHH! It makes me mad sometimes, the way R/H is shoved down our throtes

. H/H better happen, or we'll NEVER hear the end of it from R/H shippers.
BUT, and that's a big but, not all R/H +H/G shippers are like that. Imean you got your good ones AND your bad ones, not just in Heron but in ANY ship.
Wow, I rambled on a bit didn't I? Sorry about that!

Oh and BTW
Caina I loved your essay. At first I was like OMG, why is a Chocolateer posting
here? But then I got to the end and smiled. Very Good!

Caina.
you've said exactly what's on my mind. i'm really quite annoyed with all of their prejudices and it seems that H/Hr is
really, really platonic and 'silly'. But then as
numba1weirdo have said, there are also quite a number from both ships that are also very understanding. I admit that even i sometimes fall into the 'bad' side of my ship.
hmm... i'm usually hot headed and i couldn't avoid it when i become too... um,
angered. and so, there are also times when i almost see myself as 'one of them'.
*sigh*
perhaps, i've been saying too much that you couldn't understand me anymore.
well, just look at the last line of my signature...

Wahh!! that was simply brilliant!!!!

at first I was going "Huh?" then when I read the last part of your post I went "OOOH!!!" with a very devilish grin plastered on my face.... that was really smart of you... imaging those HG shippers (and RHR) going "Argh! It did happen to Harry and Hemione!"... it really gives this a new light! good going...
