Okay.... I have two things to say
on-topic: Piper... I think you are right about the baby ones. I like babies and whatever, but some people don't establish the dynamic right, making it a bad story.
off-topic: HiddenOracle -- I just read That Day and I thought it was wonderful!

It was nothing in particular, don't worry about it. Your story was fantastic, and I've used plenty of over done plot lines myself. Hehe, I was actually just commenting on a trend I'd noticed!

Ryoko had it right- the stupid truth or dare fics. I have yet to read one that had any skill involved in the writing or a point.
Personally, I see too many "Harry all of a sudden loves Ginny and she loves him too but then Draco comes and messes it all up." I wish authors were a bit more original than that. Of course some writers can pull it off.

I've got to say that there is a lot of overused D/G plot lines... Such as the "Ginny needs money so she works for her worst enemy and end up falling in love in five seconds..." or the "Voldermort needs ginnys soul/child and falls in love with the deatheaters son who kidnepped her..." and yes, they do get really boring after a while

| IN OTHER NEWS, an overused plot in Ginny/Draco fics is the one where Draco suddenly starts working at Ginny's job...for unknown reasons, of course...and the two are forced to work on a project together or Ginny's assigned a project by Draco where he's constantly by her side. |

Ive never seen one of those before! Interesting.....Maybe I'm just reading in all the wrong places.....*shrug* Are there any good ones?

HiddenOracle: I loved That Day! Sure, a plot bunny was used, but there was a twist. I loved it!
As for overused plots: I hate Ginny bumping into Draco in the hall (although I'm guilty of using it once. Don't kill me.), following each other out of the Great Hall, but just recently that is starting to bother me: when Draco has a curse on him from his father or whatnot. I've seen it so many times. And it comes between him and Ginny or something. It's a great idea, but it's becoming overused, I think.
Although I do love a few of those before-mentioned plots (in this post and others)... They entertain me when there's nothing else to read. *shrug*

I really haven't read any over done story lines. But if I did, I wouldn't continue reading the fic! I would review saying how I felt it is over done, but I am not an author yet, so my opinion may not matter, as to someone who does write fics.

I can't stand when story lines seem repeated and over done.
1. Ginny becoming a maid/slave to the Malfoys.
2. A spell changing Draco's mind set.
3. Ginny needing helps with Potions.
Show some originality. That's how you gain respect as an author.

Ack, I agree with all of these! However, everybody has admitted to reading/writing these D/G cliches, so no biggie. In fact, I think cliches can be done sooo wonderfully. That's why they're used so much, because 1 or even 2 people can do it beautifully, and then everyone else tries and.. well... fails.
But yeah, cliches can be great fun, it just depends on the author.
Sakura1287
Aug 22 2003, 04:39 PM
I think if a writer uses a cliched idea on one of their first fics...well thats expected.
PLUS, the d/g fandom has become so huge that there aren't many ideas that AREN'T taken!
Although alot of these are very good ideas for fics...writers need to have originality to make the story their own.
If a writer has their own way of writing a story, even if the plot is INCREDIBLY overdone... people will still read it. It all depends on the amount of talent of the author.
besides, who can resist another d/g fic?

hello! new user, here.
Sakura1287's and J's were the first ones I thought of. But another D/G cliche I really dislike reading is when Draco and Ginny is being forced into a marriage together. Like their parents would ever do that!
But I guess if the story was well-written and had a LOGICAL explanation, I wouldn't mind reading it.

Also, just because you have read the same plotline in a couple stories, oesn't exactly mean it's cliched.
I haven't even read some of these ideas....[well ok i have 90% of them a million times]
Pretty soon it's going to be impossible to write an original D/G fanfic, because everyone's idea's keep getting stolen and there wont be
anything left.

that wont be fun.

I just love it when I stumble upon a D/G fic that is completely original, because I ave no idea what is going to happen.
I mean, we all know it'll end up D/G, that's why it's a D/G fic...
But it's not like we know the story already from reading it before in another fic, so it just makes it so much more fun to read.

I've actually got some D/G in my new upcoming HP fanfiction. Thank God none of the cliches mentioned have to do with it. *Wipes sweat from forehead.*
I'd tell you my lovely little D/G plot that mixes in with the plot at hand, but hey, wouldn't want to start a chain of cliches, right?
Sakura1287

Hehe, good idea Kathornia...
Some of my fics involve a bit of the cliches listed here but none of the plots are entirely cliched, so i think that's all right.

There is a lot of clichés I don't mind, but honestly, it gets boring after a while. The things I really can’t stand is resortings, neither when Draco gets sorted into Gryffindor and gets all nice suddenly and befriends the Golden Trio, or when Ginny gets sorted into Slytherin and turns mean and everything.
I also hate exchange students, mostly. I don’t mind them if they don’t have big roles, but when they are the main-characters.
And I really don’t like when Ginny turns out to be Harry’s twin or Voldemort's daughter.

Sep 14 2003, 02:52 AM
Okay, I've read what everyone's said and I agree almost totally! The thing I'm surprised no one has mentioned is the old "Draco teaching Ginny to use a broom properly" scenario. I mean some of them can be really good, but others I have to stop reading. Especially ones that involve badly written broom sex!
Then again I'm pretty sure most of mine have been done before...
On another point, does anyone know of any really good and original D/G fics?
Sakura1287
Sep 14 2003, 12:21 PM
I'd say the most original one I've read is "All You Need is Love"... never seen Ginny and Draco turned into royalty briefly before...lol.

Oo? I have never seen that... Harry's twin? Can you point me to a fic like that, I'm suddenly interested in seeing how that's done.
Some of the best fics I've read are now considered cliche, but I just fix that problem with never reading the same sort of storyline twice.

Nice!Draco is (and I will repeat it because it is oh-so-true) HORRIBLE! DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The worst plot I've read is (and I just read this like last night, this is an ACTUAL quote) "Draco and Ginny got on the train and talked and by the time they got off they knew they were in love".
OH MY GOD!!!!!!!
No way they would fall in love THAT fast. NO WAY! Okay 1. It's DRACO! He's not a plush toy! He's a frickin' MALFOY! 2. Why would they talk? For what REASON? They didn't fall in love, they just..... and 3. ARGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!

Okay, Novalee, I really have to read that fic now. Where was it? I can't believe any author is, well, dumb enough to try anf pull instant love like that off.
I don't read much but high quality fics now, so I can't really think of anything else to add... but it seems as though EVERY D/G fic has a plot line that forces them together somehow, and they hate it, and then over the course of time they fall in love.
I would really like to see some that are actually done another way. Even though I admit, that would be very hard.

Nov 13 2003, 11:50 PM
Ack, I can't decide!
I haven't actually read any fics about the first one; just fics about Draco dating Ginny so he can throw it in Ron's face. The second last one is definitely one of the very worst. No author, not even the very best, could pull off a scenario like that. As for Novalee's quote...-dies-
However, choice number three can be nice if written by a good author. But not Ginny going DIRECTLY to Draco looking for money.
I ended up voting for Nice!Draco. Because one of the more fun aspects of D/G is Draco insulting the trio, Ginny berating him and the whole thing ending in a major snog session...

And also, a Draco out of character is simply just not Draco anymore.

As for me - while I do agree with Kaykos about reiko's fic - I'm caught between Ginny being a tight spot and Draco helping her out, Nice!Draco *shudder* - and my favorite one of all: D/G going out to get even with their family/friends. Nothing can beat that one, I tell you. For sure.
They'll all overused, though. Maybe you could try something original like D/G being best friends even though they're not allowed to and - wait, that's AU. Never mind.

*Ginny's in a tight spot so she goes looking to Draco for money/Draco offers her money for something else D/G I read one of theese that was pretty good...but every other time ive seen it...ick.
*Sudden realization that they don't really hate each otherD/G THE WORST...grrr...
*Nice!Draco wants to be in the good books with the trio so he dates Ginny and then falls in love D/G I voted for this one even though i said the above was worse. I don't mind this one if it's written well. As long as the plot is thought out and funny, then it doesn't bother me too much. Because there are a lot of different way you could write this one. Especially if you change the idea a bit, or don't use money but something else..
