If you had to debate H/Hr and were allowed only one piece of canon evidence, which would you choose?

I hope this type of poll hasn't been done already; I was just wondering what other people's thoughts were. Give reasons for your choice, especially if you choose "Other".

I picked Krum/Cho jealousy because I can't see what other possible reason JKR would have for putting it in the story if it isn't foreshadowing H/Hr.

sorcerer.gif I just like this smiley.

Harry/Hermione 4eva
Arrrrrrggghhhhhhh!!!! It's toooo hard! crying.gif
I wanted to vote for all of them, but in the end I went for Hermione's dissapointment that Harry didn't want to knit. I mean, yeah, it could be seen as a friendship thing, you know, wanting to knit with her best friend and all that, but I dunno... I just like it.
That and Harry's reaction at Hermiones "death". biggrin.gif

See how hard it was to choose??? unsure.gif

Great Poll! thumbup.gif

I voted for the Prefect incident, but there were one thing missing.

Hermiones reactions to the Cho/Harry relationship is quite telling. She is sooo trying to be a good and supporting friend, but she does not like it, she does not like it at all.
Jennifer Moore
Well, I think they're all convincing, but I voted for Harry's reaction to Hermione's 'death'. I'm pretty convinced of Hermione's emotions for Harry, but Harry's emotions have been sort of in the way. I think he will definately give his relationship with her a second thought as to where they stand, because he felt he had lost her.

But I was this <--> close to voting for the Prefect incident. She obviously have higher thoughts of Harry's abilities than Ron's. If she was really into Ron, she'd either have asked only him (And then be excited that he got it) or asked both of them as to not favor Harry (She knows Ron's jealousy feelings... if she fancies him she'd have thought about that before being inconsiderate). heart.gif

>.< Such wonderful and hard choices!
But eventually, I voted for the hug Hermione gave Harry at 12G. That's not a best friend thing. You can't hug your friend and not want to let go as much as Hermione didn't want to let go of Harry. In front of Ron, even. If Hermione knew that Ron liked her there (which I have no doubt in my mind that she did), then it's a pretty good proof that Hermione doesn't return Ron's feelings.

Anyway, I loved that scene to bits because it shows Hermione being so overly concerned for Harry, and missing him so much that she just could NOT let go of him.

But you forgot another scene:

'I know you're in there!' said Hermione's voice. 'Will you please come out? I want to talk to you.'

That's from memory, mind you blush.gif That is my ultimate favorite H/Hr scene in OotP. I can't even describe how wonderful that scene is. It represents so many things I love about H/Hr, and... *is speechless*
I love that scene wub.gif

Yeah, I always found that hug a little on the suspicious side. wink.gif I don't care if he is your best friend, you don't hug someone that long unless there's something there. And keeping in mind the last time she saw him before that was when she kissed him goodbye at the train station. Oh shoot, I should have put that one up there too! mad2.gif laugh.gif
Joogie
Very difficult to choose, but in the end I voted for the scene when Hermione was disappointed that Harry didn't want to knit elf hats with her, because I think it's the single strongest evidence that Hermione does like Harry "in that way".

Though if I had my time over again, I'd vote for the Prefect Badge incident, I think. I didn't read the options properly. blush.gif That scene, I think, is the absolute quintessential (love that word!) moment of H/Hrness because it shows it going both ways: Hermione was positive that Harry deserved and would get the badge, and later Harry couldn't even face her when she'd found out Ron was the one to get the prefect position.

Yeah...kind of wish I'd voted of that one now. wink.gif

And that's a true winner there, dani - another of the reciprocal H/Hr scenes! biggrin.gif

Hikaru
I voted for the almost death scene, because I think it showed me the subconcious side of Harry taking over him. We talk here of how he has changed toward Hermione, like protecting her in an almost automatic way, so perhaps he hasn't realized it yet. This scene showed me Harry's feelings toward her again in a more dramatic way. It was atough choice though, 'cause I also love when he protected her from Grawp. But I liked the fact that for one moment his subconcio us side of him took over, to the point that he felt light-headed when he knew she was still alive wub.gif heart.gif
Diamond
Oh my, all of these are such beautiful and squee worthy moments that it took me a long time to pick. wub.gif Well I picked the prefect incident because when I first read that passage I raised my eyebrows. I mean if Hermione loved Ron so much then way did she couldn't think of at least one reason why Ron would make a good prefect? She even asked Harry if he was sure that Ron was prefect and her jaw even dropped when she heard the news. Oh ya Hermione sure loves Ron.
Also the way Hermione shrieked when she saw the badge in Harry's hand was very un-Hermione like. She acted like one of his fangirls. Also why did JKR make Harry have the badge in his hand for Hermione to see it? Why couldn't JKR just put the badge on the table or have someone else hold it rather than Harry? Everything is written for a reason in JKR's world, and it is very suspicous that she wrote Harry holding it.........
Another reason why I like that scene is because after this Harry couldn't even look at Hermione after Ron and the others left the room. He wasn't even using his own voice and only got his real voice back when he spoke to Ron afterwards. It is like Harry felt he let Hermione down and maybe was a little jealous of Ron getting the badge.
I love every scene for H/Hr, but this scene interested me the most. smile.gif
Urazz
I picked other cause really to me they all together make H/Hr a real convincing ship. I normally wouldn't make or break a ship with just one scene alone.
Arian
I voted for the Krum/Cho thing because it always seems that if you're in a relationship (boyfriend/girlfriend, spouse, or even friendship) that it's those who have the outside-looking-in vantage point who are able to see more clearly on some things than those inside the relationship can. Those on the outside don't have to deal with any relationship bias or overcome any pre-established roles within the relationship say going from friend to something more. Having an outside or third opinion often is a great help!

I know, and I believe that our ship's greatest strength is the overwhelming "mountain of evidence" we have from all five books. This thought just kinda popped into my head, that if you had to debate H/Hr and were only allowed a single piece of canon evidence, which one would people use.
Medusa
I went for BuckBeak in the end. Riding it together just seemed too perfect.
Moonstruck
I picked Hermione 'dying' at the end. This shows Harry's feelings coming out. If nothing had happened to Sirius, we might have seen something at the end of the book (confused feelings etc.). Other scenes would be any Hermione vs. Cho (which I use to keep my faith!).
Sariele
I nearly voted for "other" as a sort of "all of the above and more" option, but I thought that was rather boring. So instead I picked Harry's protection against grawp/centaurs, cause even though I love all the other evidence too, I'm a real sucker for this instictive protectiveness that Harry had towards Hermione in OotP.

Let's hope we see some more of it in the future!

That was without a doubt the hardest poll I've ever voted in!

I eventually got it down b/w Harry's reaction to Hermione's "death", and the Krum/Cho jealousy, and decided to go for the latter. Mainly cos I feel it shows that feelings may be there for both of them, whereas the former option is only talking about Harry, and cos there's just no reason for Jo to have written such jealousy from both love interests if there was nothing there ...

Yeah, that's the thing I keep coming back to over and over any time I start to doubt H/Hr. There is just no other explaination for that jealousy to be in the story, that I can see, other than to hint H/Hr.

The Rita Skeeter articles are sort of a corrolary to the Krum/Cho jealousy thing too. I didn't see any reason for those either, other than to hint us.
blueangel
I've voted for Harry's reaction to Hermione's "death" in the DoM, because of the intensity of the reaction - when he thinks she might be dead, he cannot even look at her, he's panicking ("it's my fault if she's dead") and when Neville tolds him that he feels a pulse, he feels a "powerful wave of relief", so much that he feels "light-headed" for a moment. This together makes me believe that the scene will haunt him as much as Sirius' death. This might be the first step to the realization of his feelings.
Another moment that I find very telling is Harry's dream when Cho becomes Hermione. The subconscious mind is speaking in a dream, and JKR did not have to do it that way. Cho could have become any girl, Ginny, Luna, but it was Hermione. There's a reason for this.
There are a lot of moments leading to Hr-->H; Hermione shows more than once how much she cares for Harry and how important he is for her, at such a point that it becomes more and more obvious that he's not just a friend for her. But we have less evidence about Harry's feelings, and those two, the dream and the DoM, are, I think, meaningful.

This took the words right out of my mouth and fit what I was thinking perfectly. biggrin.gif Krum and Cho's jealousy has always been one piece of evidence I've liked to bring up because it just doesn't seem right to have it in the story if Hermione and Harry are not going to end up together. People on the outside looking in usually have a better perspective than those on the inside.

If I was gonna vote for something else, I would have voted for Harry's reaction to thinking Hermione was dead and his following reaction to realizing she was still alive. This was a time, for myself, that Harry showed more than just friendly feelings towards Hermione. It showed how much Harry really cared for Hermione and how much he really needs her. He needed her so much that he couldn't even think straight as to the situation he was in. The fact that Hermione had supposedly died right in front of him drove everything else out of his head at the moment.

That was hard! I amost didn't vote at all! All of those make me H/Hr shiper. wub.gif

But I agree with Hikaru

Those are exactly my thoughts about this scene, so I voted for it.

But I was thinking about this as well:

And if I had to answer this question, fishtankbabe :
QUOTE

I would choose all canon people who had assumed that H/Hr are thogether.
Those are of course Cho Chang and Victor Krum, as well as Rita Skeeter and Molly Weasley who had been mean toward Hermione after Skeeter's second article. Minerva McGonqgall in CoS and even Malfoy (in OotP with his hitting the nerve)
To me this was the most telling thing in canon. After all those people see H/Hr acting together.

This poll was great thumbup.gif but hard to choose.

Don't forget about Pansy Parkinson. I always get the feeling that the reason she gives Hermione so much grief is that she thinks that she and Draco are competing with Harry and Hermione for the title of Hogwarts Supercouple.

Hey! I have never thought about Pansy that way! biggrin.gif Well it may explain some of her nasty comments.

But I think that Draco & Pansy won't be together. (I'm NOT D/G shipper, in fact I'm Ginny/Neville) But IMO Draco and Pansy are to obvious, and I don't feel Malfoy takes her and her feelings serious.

Although it occures to me right now, that Malfoy may be forced to marry her (I suppose she's pureblood). You know, like they were destined to be married by their parents right after they were born. Sirius said that there isn't many pureboold families and you don't have much choice when you are looking for another pureblood who isn't your cousin.
Oh, now I feel sorry for them, especialy IF they don't love each other.

But to be honest, generaly I don't care much about them.

oh, I'm a bit offtopic.gif sorry...

So now I will include Pansy to my list of people who are canon "H/Hr shippers" wink.gif

Cheers,

I'm going in for the Krum/Cho thing, and I didn't even find it hard to decide.
Why?
It's the ONLY one in the list that works BOTH ways! All the others, beautiful as they may be are one-sided only, either they show Hermione's feelings for Harry, or the other way round. (Personally, I rather dislike the centaurs/Grawp scenes, they show Hermione too much as the weak and frightened un-Gryffindor.) As some of you guys have already pointed out, onlookers from outside are probably best at spotting undercurrents those concerned are not even aware of themselves.
But just let me tell you one other favourite of mine (though one-sided, too):

QUOTE
"You just had to be nice to her," Hermione said anxiously.

(I'm quoting from memory, so don't kill me if it's not exactly correct.)

So - hejust had to be nice to Cho, right? In other words, ONLY FRIENDLY/PLEASANT/POLITE, and wat's more, poor Harry WAS FORCED to be that, according to my dictionary. Not exactly the idea of an enthusiastic snogging session, right? And what's more, she says it ANXIOUSLY!!!

Now if that's not a clear sign, then what is? thumbup.gif

HELLO guys,

i voted 4 the 'death' scene in DOM! i feel that Hermione has feelings for Harry, but i wasn't sure of harry, but after this scene I think that Harry DOES have feelings, subconciously, he just has to realise it!

by the way, i also thought "But i dont think you're ugly" comment was soooooooooooooo cute and soooooooooooooooooo sweet!!!! wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif

P.S: this is one of my first posts and i dunno if i did this correctly.....i hope i did tho blush.gif

Oh my, that was the hardest poll ever, but I eventually voted for Harry's reaction when it seemed Hermione was dead. That was just so touching and compared to when Harry thought Ginny was dead in CoS, Harry thinking Hermione was dead was so dramatic. It showed us how much Hermione means to Harry.
moogle
yeah i chose the DoM almost death scene like so many others because it finally confirmed harry's feelings for hermione, he acted like some lost child not knowing what to do, not exactly the same reaction to ron when he gets hit with the queen and the brains, and siruis death that scene just showed to me how powerful harry's feeelings were to hermione.
pnkrkprincess91
Since we can't read our favorite character's minds (wish as we might), the best reactions we have to their relationship come from other characters, such as Cho and Krum. That's why their pondering of the true nature of Harry and Hermione's relationship (wub.gif) is the biggest evidence for our ship, in my humble opinion.

I picked other cause really to me they all together make H/Hr a real convincing ship.  I normally wouldn't make or break a ship with just one scene alone.

I must admit I was tempted to choose "Other" for exactly the same reasons! It is the "total weight of the evidence", not just one thing that stands out to me. That's the other thing, I guess - There are SO MANY strong H/Hr evidences through all the books to choose from that aren't even listed as options in the poll, up to and including Hermione deliberately moving away from her parents to join Harry at King's Cross Station in OOTP.

I ended up voting for the Krum/Cho jealousy option for the reasons others have stated - it is an "external" verification from other characters of what we as H/Hr shippers can see so clearly - that they are meant to be! wub.gif
And, I do agree that Rita Skeeter's article is along the same lines - a reporter, even one of the "tabloid" variety, is trained to put together subtle hints and information from various sources to come up with an article, and she did! whistling.gif
kikyo
at first I confused to choose between krum/cho jealously or buckbeak ... and then I decided to say cool.gif Hippogriff coz to me, JKR seems has hidden plan for H/Hr future relationship while soooo many thinks it's gotta be R/Hr in the end

but of course it's tied so close with krum/cho thing ... whistling.gif

buckbeak is kinda romantic and krum/cho is pretty funny (dealing with H/Hr) thumbup.gif

the other options are one-sided ... but still make wide grin on my face innocent.gif

Heya...

I chose the scene where Hermione was knocked unconscious by that curse in the DoM. When I read that scene... I was near-panic. I could only imagine what harry felt at that moment. I don't know... something about that scene struck me as H/Hr. Maybe because we finally see (or read... hehehe cool.gif ) just how much Hermione means to Harry. I mean, sure there were other times over the past five books/years that Harry was grateful for Hermione... but "such a powerful wave of relief swept through Harry that for a moment he felt light-headed" (OotP, British Hardback, p.700).

just my 0.02.

bo-
hpfanatic
That was hard, I couldn't really vote. Most of the convincing scenes for me are from OOTP (another reason for why it's my favourite out of the series). I can't say that one was more convincing than the other, because when I started reading the books.. I always imagined Harry with Hermione and that belief became stronger reading the books more and more. There are plenty that stick out like the prefect badge scene or when Hermione confronts Harry when he feels guilty and confused for the attack on Arthur Weasley. Also, when he admits to kissing Cho Chang.

One scene that still doesn't convince me fully is the but your not ugly scene. I know a lot of guys who say that to their friends who are girls and mean it in an platonic way. Oh well, at least Harry doesn't think that Hermione is ugly!

Cassandra Elise
I couldn't decide between the hippogriff symbolism or the DOM incident. After all, Harry's reaction to Hermione's "death" convinced me that Harry was completely over Cho and moving on to better things. But I ended up voting for the Buckbeak connection. People can construe all of the H/Hr moments any way they like, but they cannot deny that the hippogriff is a symbol of love. This outside proof completely bolstered my faith that the final pairing will be Harry and Hermione.
DFlataphilia
For me it's a tie between the DoM incident, the post-kiss scene, and Cho/Krum's jealousy.

I loved the 'but i don't think you're ugly' part just because it was so honest and so pure and, acutally rather blunt. And I thought the way Harry reacted to Hermonie's "death" was a HUGE piece of confirmation!!! But I voted for Krum/Cho's jealousy- just because it felt right and its been said already- the third party always sees it first.
BlueAngel79
I considered the '. . but I don't think you're ugly' quote as Harry's first step. A single honest line of thought which seemed to highlight Hermione's physical features under his young eyes. yes, he doesn't feel anything for her at this stage ( at least that's what he thinks, or perhaps the writer isn't ready to make him think about IT at this point ). I thought this was an extension, a reminder of that scene a year ago at the Yule Ball, except that this would be the first time he 'aired' that view.

I think I've changed my mind about Hermione's near death as the most convincing evidence. Now it's a tie between that and the Cho/Krum jealousy.
It really shows us how anybody who hooks up with Harry is going to have to compete with Hermione, and the same goes with any guy for Hermione.
Even Ron got jealous.

If there is one reason why I ship H/Hr, it is this:

I have not read one single fanfic that has made R/Hr or H/G even remotely believable without completely altering and changing the characters' personality; making it *almost* AU. It may just be the shipper in me talking, but everything I read that has R/Hr feels so bogus it makes me sick. Call me foolish for basing it on non-cannon material, but there it is. I cannot imagine how JK could possibly make the ship not feel phoney. H/HR, on the other hand, is ridiculously easy to set up. (Unless you're me) This entiree website is proof of that.

I just had to put the prefect inscident because, to me, it showed both Harry and Hermione's developing feelings. First, we have Hermione wanting to spend more time with Harry, being proud of him, and choosing him over Ron. She couldn't even really compliment and was blushing like crazy because she was practically caught. Then we have Harry not knowing why he couldn't look at Hermione and his voice sounding strange when they were alone together. Maybe I'm reaching, but that's my #1 scene. That's all I need. biggrin.gif

Hi everyone, and a belated Merry Christmas to all! wub.gif

I was stupid enough to click the "View Results" icon by mistake, so I didn't get to vote ... bummer. It's awfully hard to choose between some of the options, but I think I'm going with Krum and Cho's reactions to Harry and Hermione. *edits poll* smile.gif ~Anazecria/Nielle

Funnily enough, sometimes, we're not aware of something that's right under our very noses -- or of something that's already in our subconcious. Sometimes, it takes other people's observations or reactions to open our eyes to something our hearts already know, but that our minds have yet to realize.

There's just one problem, though. Harry, being a rather stubborn male (forgive me guys, but sometimes, men can be very stubborn and very blind about some things!), still can't quite see that the bond between him and Hermione has an added dimension that sets it apart from what we usually understand as a very close friendship -- hence, his reaction to Krum's and Cho's observations. I hope, though, that he'll finally wise up in Book 6!

Peace and goodwill, and a Harry -- oops! -- Happy New Year to everyone!

This wasn't listed as one of the choices, but I think what Prof. McGonagall said at the end of chapter 12 really struck a chord with me. She didn't say it in so many words, but her parting words of wisdom to Harry as he left her office was, "At least you listen to Hermione Granger". I found that a rather odd way to end that chapter. If this wasn't a thematic device that would play later on in the book(as well as Harry's feelings for Hermione progresses) then why does it end on a "think about it note?" It leaves the reader pondering if maybe McGonagall sees or knows something is starting to move H/Hr's relationship from being just friends to something deeper.

The only fanfic stories with romance in them that manage to stay in-character are those with H/Hr pairings. Everything else forces the writer to either change the story's perspective to another character, like Ron, or it gives out far more "screen time" to a minor character like Ginny.

It is unusual to use fanfic as the basis of an argument, but I think this point is more than valid. If no one else can write a believable R/Hr romance at this point, how do they expect JKR to do it?

There was a point where JKR could have believably gone either way with the shipping. But after OotP, it's clear to me (and the rest of us Pumpkineers), that she's chosen the H/Hr destination. If she was going to take us to R/Hr, OotP should have gone in that direction, and it didn't. The road had to fork somewhere, and I think OotP was it.

Anyway, I feel the same way about the movies as you do about the fanfic. Those little R/Hr moments feel so forced and unnatural, it's ridiculous.

They are all very convincing. However, I've chosen Harry's reaction to Hermione's "death" at DOM. Personally, I've had experienced and have heard many true experiences from family and friends regarding their reactions at times when love ones are sick or dying that they don't know what to do or think. And to think some of them are experienced nurses or caregivers like me who have been through emergency situations but sometimes feels "panicky" when dealing with sick love ones.
There are already H/Hr wub.gif evidences since PS/SS. A lot of shippers already mentioned them so I don't have to. But, the OotP has the most so far. I think in the upcoming Book 6, they will finally acknowledge their feelings for each other. I don't think we have to wait for Book 7 for that. That is, I hope not. blush.gif It's going to be a very happy New year for us. biggrin.gif

You know, I voted in this thread a long time ago and realized that I never posted my answer. Well that figures. tongue.gif

Anyway, I voted for the DoM "death" scene too, although I certainly would have loved an "All of the Above" option. There's just something about a "powerful wave of relief" that it makes a person feel "light-headed" that just speaks volumes to me. wink.gif

The prefect badge incident comes in second, in my book. Hermione's reaction is priceless. wub.gif

[FONT=Arial][SIZE=7][COLOR=blue] Well this is my first time on here and I wanted to share something that occured to me earlier. Right before OOTP came out AOL and I believe another place gave us a glimpse of someone reading a scene from OOTP. This scene was when Harry came to Grimmauld Place and Hermione hugged him. Why would JK choose to have us listen to that? I think that's her subtle way of saying it's the H/Hr ship that will win out in the end. I see all the evidence of Ron liking Hermione. However, I never have seen any proof that Hermione likes Ron.
