Starlight623
I know some names around here are obviously going to be Harry Potter related, but what about the others? I was just curious where some of the names out there came from.

For example, my nick, Starlight623, came from my favorite musical Starlight Express. The number came from the first time I saw it (6/23). Completely cheesy, I know, but I was way obsessed with it for a while. (Kinda like I'm H/Hr obsessed now blush.gif)

So anyway, any one else wanna share? Even if it's obvious, share with the group thumbup.gif

tistytosty and I have agreed to move this from the Off-Topic forum to Prof. Binn's Library. To reduce the clutter in Off-Topic, and to call more attention to the Library. ~gal-texter Feb2004
Me111
Absolutely nothing. biggrin.gif To be honest, I don't remember even becoming a member, and I probably couldn't think of a name when I joined. Goes to show my complete lack of creativity. sad.gif If I had to think of one now, it'd be an odd mix my two fav ships, Harry/Hermione from HP, and Harm/Mac from JAG(the two people on my avatar) Just thought I'd put a little plug for JAG blush.gif sorry if it was user posted image
NAPPA
Hmm... NAPPA is a small time villain in a anime show called " Dragon BAll Z" . He's a hot head, does not think about anything before acting, and is a brute. He is persistent though. THe way I came to choose the name was when I first started writing, my youngest brother (very big fan of that show) told me, after I ruined one of his games, that I'm like NAPPA.

Well. I kind of took the name to heart. smile.gif

NAPPA
yuan
yuan is actually my given Chinese name transliterated into English. biggrin.gif As for its meaning, it's very esoteric, something like "that initial occuring incident that gives reason to all other events in the universe".

Pretty hefty, don't you think?
Cool Like Ice
I know someone named Yuan....

But my nickname came from my ff.net pen name, which came from....I dunno, it just popped into my head.
effectivelyabsent
I tend to, uh, I guess "zone out" is the right term, a lot. I spend a ton of time mumbling to myself, going over parts of Harry Potter, watching X-Files episodes, and doing about a thousand other things (except paying attention), all in my head, so while I am physically somewhere (for instance, in a lecture hall or at the dinner table), I'm "effectively" (for all intents and purposes) absent.

This was a cool topic thread!

-- jamie
Thieving Magpie
Well, my nickname was originally inspired by a live album of the band marillion. I've been using that nickname ever since I got access to the internet. Other than that I really like those birds. They're beautiful just like Hermione. smile.gif
PhoenixWriter
phoenix Is not from HP. I thought about that name as I played final fantasy. But I thought always by this name about myself. You know what a phoenix do. Its burn down and will born out ash again. Its a symbol of hope. Nothing can happen if you believe that there is hope. phoenixfeather is my normal name and this one show that I need only a piece off hope to go on. No matter how bad my destiny may be I won´t give up.
Now to writer thats simple. I wanted always be a writer since I was twelve. This two names together show who I´m. That I won´t give up to believe that I may become a real writer. I mean I have already writen a novel. I need only to find a nice guy who published it. But I´m young I know I have enough time to get what I want.
Gaarder
Hmmm my nickname is not actually not my nickname but my family name. hehe. it should have been JGaarder; J for Johanna, but i figured Gaarder was fine. it wasn't a very common last name.
SilverMuse
SilverMuse?...It kinda came from my old nickname SilverSpider...because i was an avid Spiderman fan and a computer whiz kid by the time i was four, my friends and family nicked me SilverSpider.

Muse came from my muse, my spirit guide - actually more like my guardian angel. She's called Malayna but i can't be called SilverMalayna...too girly.

So that is how SilverMuse was born.
Quis
The name "Quis" started with a small obsession to have a nick withthe letter Q in it. I can't remember who told me this but "Quis" means "Who" is another language. I'm not sure which though. French is close, but maybe it's latin. Anyways, the name sort of fits as I don't usually give out my name. It's also good to have a short nick so people don't have to come up with shortened versions of it. Sorry Ds, TK, CC and others, I know I do it too.
darkstar
lol, no problem Quis, I don't mind being called Ds.

As for my nickname... It's a little complicated... It had to do with a phase in my life which I pray desperately I am past... It's basically what described me then. The meaning? I was a pretty dark person, still am sometimes. But nobody knew about it, and they thought I was happy, smart, etc. I was a Dark person, but a Star pupil... Make sense? Probably not.

Darkstar
PhoenixWriter
QUOTE
I was a Dark person, but a Star pupil... Make sense? Probably not.

For me make it pretty much sense. I think I know what you mean.
I think I´m lucky that people don´t say PW. Phoenix is very fine with me.
Sarahkitty
Ooh....had to reply.

I came up w/ Sarahkitty in an incredibly non-creative moment. My first name is Sarah *easy*, and my middle is Catherine. shortened Catherine to "kitty"...and viola!

*thinks maybe she should come up w/ a more creative name now.*

Besides, I think kitty somehow adds a sensual flair to things.

Oh, and Nappa...thanks for the explanation. I was thinking it had to do w/ either a misspelling of California's Napa valley, or the Auto Parts Company *Nappa Auto Parts!* tongue.gif
Scully
Ithink my name is pretty obvious. Its from the character Scully off the X-Files. One of my favorite shows. Buffy, Mac(fromJAG) and Scully are kinda like my role models. alien.gif
brittmizit
once upon a time there was me, brittany, who my faimily/friends called britt. but my ever-so immature father wanted a more unique name for me, hence brittmizit. if you must know, he also calls me zit, britt, mizit, mizitany, zitany, brittanymizit, brittanymizitany, and brittmizitany. oh, the wierd things from immature fathers...
steel lily
steel lily is a fandom nickname for Éowyn of Rohan, who I believe is one of the coolest heroines around...(next to Hermione of course) and also, it just sounded damn cool.

~Nell
steel lily
Quis, Quis is "who" in Latin.

Well, having a Resident Latin-Speaker has got to come in handy SOME time...

~Nell
SweetSolitude1377
This was a very clever idea, I like things like this because I always wonder where in the world people think up screen names for themselves.

My screen name really doesn't have too much meaning. I was writing a poem and I called it Sweet Solitude. And, 13 and 7 are my favorite numbers. hehe. I was born at 3:17 in the moning! Ok, ok, sorry about that, it really had nothing to do with anything. blush.gif

Well, there you have it.

~Sweet wub.gif
Chico
One day I was sitting infront of the computer, THE GREAT DAY WHEN I JOINED PORTKEY *ahem*, and I was thinking of a name then Chico came into my head (the part that is not filled with stupid and useless information from school). Then like 2 weeks later I saw a commercial for Chico's the clothing store, I was angry (lol) BECAUSE EVERYONE COPIES STUFF FROM ME.

BECAUSE EVERYONE COPIES STUFF FROM ME <----------that is the story of my life

Chico
DemonOfTheFall
Interesting topic, figured I'd reply. Mine isn't very creative, it's just the name of a song by my favorite band, Opeth. I love the song and thought it would make a cool nickname, so I adpoted it as my pen name and everything else on the site. Demon of the Fall is a track on their third album, My Arms, Your Hearse. Great song by the way.
Jacy
Not a very interesting story behind my name.

A few years ago, my best friend nicknamed herself silverstar, so I automatically became silvermoon. So, from then on, any gift she got me had to do with the moon and vice versa (it was pretty funny at the time). So, I was trying to think up a nickname for myself on ff.net and I went to this baby names website and typed in the word "moon" as a meaning and I got a whole mess of em. Jacy just sounded cool, so voila! - my nickname. According to the website, it means "the moon" in American Indian...

Like I said, not so interesting, but hey! - it works smile.gif

~ Jacy
Batgirl801
well, my nickname goes all the way back to 7th grade. A friend and I would pass notes about the boys we were crushing on. But we could NEVER use their real names, so we came up with code names. I code named my guy "Batman" and since we could NEVER sign our own names to the notes, we had to have codenames for ourselves, too! So to make myself match my man, I went with Batgirl! Batman and batgirl! My friend was Cherry Coke and her guy was RC Cola...I thought mine were WAY better...

~Batgirl chris.gif

Now, why the chris.gif you ask? well, when I was at Epcot with Band Junior year, we were in the colonial america part, and I see this guy in a three corner hat walking toward us and I yell out, "Look, Guys! A Pirate!!!" of course, it was NOT a pirate, it was a colonial dude. So they make fun of me about pirates now...still...it's all in good fun, though. Plus I've always wanted to BE a pirate....I was even one for halloween in 4th grade...Just call me Redbeard..without the beard... laugh.gif
hoki poki choki chip
Well, don't think me wierd, but my name hoki_poki_choki_chip says what are my fav foods! My fav type of ice cream is Hokey Pokey and my fav type of cookie is Chocolate Chip! Wierd eh?
Bristar
hello all.....

My nickanme he? *thinks* Well I use it all the time... e-mail adresses and the such like but it comes from my grandpa...

My middle name is Brianne (Bri for short) and ever since I was old enough to understand that stars were indeed NOT firefly's, I have been rather obssessed with Astronomy. I used to visit my grand parents alot when I was a bit younger and I would go outside in a sleeping bag and fall asleep star gazing, so my grandpa began to call me his little Bristar. He called me that up until his death three years ago and the name kinda stuck with me. He was kind of an idol of mine and I supose it reminds me of him....

*wonders if that was too sappy*

*shrug*

w00t.gif

Well thats it I supose!

~Princess Bristar king.gif

Lady of the Lilacs
Hmm ... mine comes from my ff.net name. The story behind that is, I said I needed a new one, and Nell's (steel lily) is Hyacinth. She said hers was boring, and I said that I liked it. She said, "Ok, then, you can be Lady of the Lilacs." I was like, "Ok, that works."
sinta
there isn't too much of a story here. see, sinta means beloved in filipino. (maybe even in malay or something) and anyway, i saw this translation play on 'the fantasticks' where the heroine's name is 'sinta.' i thought it was sweet. that's all. heart.gif
E. C. R. Potter
How interesting.

The nickname E. C. R. Potter doesn't really hold much sepcialiness, though from from a personal point of view, I suppose it's special. E. C. R. are the initials of my real name. Quite simple as that. That's why I prefer to be called "ECR" while in chat rather than "Potter" because, the "Potter" on my penname simply acknowledges my place as a Harry Potter fanfic writer rather than a name. For example, if I were an X-Files fanfic writer, I'd probably be "E. C. R. Mulder". Hmm, actually that doesn't sound all that bad. thumbup.gif

Cristina_1106
My nickname is not really special.
My real life name is Cristina so hence the Cristina in my nick and November 6 or 11/06 is my birthdate, hence the 1106. Oh, and the _ has no purpose except to seperate my name from my birthdate.

~Cristy~
Hpfreak06
Well mind is pretty obivous, I'm a Harry Potter freak and well 06 when I got my email address they already had a Hpfreak so I just put 06 nothing special about it, but my other screename in other sites is Firebolt_chaser. Firebolt is my symbol for Harry and Hermione and well I want to be a chaser in a Quidditch team
Gaia13
Well I was reading a book when I registered, and the main character's screenname was Gaia13. I love the character so I decided to use it. And I love the name Gaia and I'll probably legally change my name to Gaia someday.
heart.gif
~Gaia~
Moonchylde
Moonchylde came from my wiccan name: Lunar Moonchylde. So I just dicded to put it is as Moonchylde. Nothing that interesting.
MalfoyMyFerret
Malfoy is My Ferret! (not much explanation needed).

amber
lily_white
This is a great topic; I'm always curious as to how people come up with their e-mail addresses, pen names, screen names, etc. I actually have a nice little story behind my name. When I first registered over at fanfiction.net, my pen name was HPbrat (not much meaning, but in my defense, I was only twelve). One of the first reviews I ever recieved was:

I like it, not quite as lily white in language as some stories.

And it stuck with me. No, it's not my real name or a reference to Harry's mom/a pretty flower. I thought that the phrase was almost representative of my personality; I've been known among my friends as the innocent one for years now. You know, the one who does not comprehend the R-rated humor of her peers without sufficient prodding, the one who paints her bedroom pastel pink at the age of fourteen, the one who balks at the idea of breaking rules. That was me. Now I enjoy shocking my friends with my actual flamboyant attention-whore self. I'm a good girl, but not quite lily white.

*phew* And after that soul-bearing little moment, I'll go scurry off to bang my head against the keyboard for a little longer. Consarnd writers' block. rolleyes.gif
Quis
Chico: Heh, if you don't like people copying stuff from you I'd get on the phone with Konami. It's the name of one of the characters in their incrediable game "Suikoden 2." Sorry to say this but it's actually one of the more annoying characters they've ever made: A bratty litle half-bird kid. The game was released long before Portkey was up so who's copying who?! innocent.gif

Oh and thanks Steel Lily. I thought that's what it was but now I can say what my name means without any doubt. Means alot.
Ryoko Blue
Lets seee here.

I got my nick name from a number of things. To start with my favorite anime character happens to be Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo. SHe is a strong willed and smart and tough character, who would not want to be associated with such a strong character's name. So I decided on Ryoko. Besides I'm also part Japanese so that kinda helps ^.^ Now for the Blue part, I wanted something that would stand out, that would be noticed and not exactly hard to forget. Also most fanfic writers tend to make Harry's favorite color blue myself included. So I put together my two obsessions, Anime and HP. I came up with Ryoko Blue. Tell me. does it work ^.~ I could of been Ryoko Green or Red even. loluser posted image
Starlight623
Wow! I never expected this many replies. Cool stories guys. thumbup.gif
coupe
Hiya. I'm really new to posting but i seen this one and decided that i had to explain my name. I get called coupe off of people in my football team who call me Coupe after a proffessional goalkeeper, basically cause he is this big six foot five guy and built like a tank, while i'm the complete opposite. *mutters about teammates sarcasm* user posted image
Adam
mine is short sweet and simple. I took the last letter of my surname, and replaced it with my first initial. Lately though, many people who dont know me think i am female, which I am not, so I now go by the nick TheOneandOnlyAdam, which has no meaning whatsoever, except my real name is Adam.
LadyGranger
This is a great thread. Anyway, I got my name from 'Soul Scepter' by Ryoko Blue. It was on of the first novel length fics I'd read. It also made me become a H/Hr shipper, so its pretty special to me. smile.gif

P.S. Hey Christina, we have the same birthday!!!!

XOXOXOXOXO LG (LadyGranger)
Emry Potter
Emry is a nickname my friends gave me last summer. My favorite color is emerald green and at first they called me Emerald but they shortened it to Emry after a couple of weeks. The Potter part is just because I guess I wanted to represent Harry Potter somehow in my nickname.
vanillapuf
Oh, I like this topic. Reading about everybody's names is so interesting.

Well, might as well throw in my story. My real name is Daniela... my friend has this uncle who always pretends to mishear everybody's names and then calls them something that SOUNDS like their name for the rest of their life. Hehehe, so he called me Vanilla. And that just stuck.

As for the PuF... a while back I played this game called Unreal Tournament, and I belonged to this forum community called PlanetUnreal Forums. So everybody who was a poster there and part of that "clan" kind of thing, played the game with the initials PuF added on. I always played as Vanilla|PuF. It's now BeyondUnreal Forums, so when I play [which i dont very much anymore] I'm Vanilla|BuF, but since I was already registered at FF.Net as VanillaPuF, I just use it as my author name and my shipper name. Its really handy because nobody ever registers under it.

Fascinating, I know. rolleyes.gif
magical mischief maker
My nick name Originates from Third Book.

Moony, Padfoot, Wormtail, Prongs; Purveyors to Magicalmischiefmaker...something like this.
I like the name Magicalmischiefmaker, although It is a bit long.
Guess that's it.
lordanhur
my nickname comes from AD&D: forgoten realms anhur a god of war and i just taced on lord
SVZ
^^' Mine isn't so orignal as everyone else's. You see, "S" and "Z' are the initals of my first name. And "V" stands for my favorite character from DBZ (Vegeta ^^ and I also like Videl too). It also sometimes stands for one of my favorite colors "Violet". Plus, It sounds a lot better than STZ *wince* "T" is the intial of my real middle name.
SVZ
oops.. I meant "S" is the inital of my first name and "Z" the initial of my last name ^^'
Oy! Angelina
My name is nothing more than an obscure quote from GoF that I use as my signature. It was one of those dumb little lines that caused me to burst out laughing. Then my roommate had to know what was so funny since she recommended HP to me in the first place (Everyone thank Carrie for without her there would be no Pensieve and a handful of online personalities would have to read something better biggrin.gif )

Anywho, I read the dialogue to her, we both laughed like jackels for ten minutes then every once in a while we'd scream "Oi! Angelina" at one another and start giggling. So when I needed a pen name for writing I didn't want to be HermionePotter or Virginia Weasely or something else like that (no offense if someone happens to be named one of these things but you have to admit you're not like one of 3,587 people using it somethwere) rolleyes.gif . So I wanted it to be some reference that wasn't overt but by no means obscure.

"Who are you going with?" just didn't strike me as a really suitble pen name

"Wreastle the Troll" was another funny one but just didn't work

"wangobalwitme?" was cute but a mouthful

And as much as I wanted to be "Pigwidgen" I just couldn't do it. So I put down Oy! Angelina sorcerer.gif ... more laughing, and that's the meaning of my name.

Oh and I'm not being clever by spelling it Oy! instead of Oi!, I'm just too lazy to look up proper spelling blushing.gif
Jorael
My Nickname means absolutley nothing, it was actually a result of an unfortunate typo.
My original nick was Jolrael, and I kinda skipped on the 'l' and the name Jorael just stuck with me, but i still like the original.... smile.gif
YuriMionePotter
wel my name is kinda retarded lol my first name is Mayuri and my Best Friends call me Yuri(which also happen to mean 'spy' in russian)
Mione is my FAV nickie for hermione
and Potter is well Potter..........name def has hopes for HHR
and i thought is sounds kinda sorta koo to say........YuriMionePotter
vanillapuf
that's interesting, YuriMionePotter, i was wondering about your name. mainly because in anime fanfiction, the warning for "yuri" indicates a lesbian pairing. so when i read your name for the first time i was a little worried wassat.gif

but it makes sense now. biggrin.gif
