Putting this in the forums in case we encounter chatspeak
-gal-texter, hoping (like everyone else here) for minimal chatspeak in PK 'cos they're hard to understand

*beep* Okay, I was just wondering about other people's interpretations of chatspeak. Taking *squick* for an example. What's your connotation of it? There's various things it could mean. I think of it as a rapid-eye twitch-happy-weird thing. But I guess it's different for other people.

Are there any other confusing chatspeak things?

I luv 2 tlk?

I hate them! Half the time I am really lost as to what they are saying. It's annoying. Especially if you're not a native speaker. I have trouble with english enough as it is. I hate it when people use things like that in FICS. I tolerate it a lot more in chats, because as I'm improving I can catch most of the "lingo" - but it's a long way before I would not have to ask :

Erm... what do you mean by "G@m3$" ?

Hewwo! (or hello, just using confusing spelling since this is the netspeak thingy) It's me again, what a surprise... lol

squick- well I'd have to say something nasty and yucky that makes your insides churn. Such as the pairing DUdley/Ginny... *feels squicky* Do you get what i'm saying?

I luv 2 tlk? I HATE THAT TOO, and I'm an american. It just ticks me off that people go get an education, and then don't use it *huffs* That REALLY gets me mad. Just like today i said somewhere i didn't like Justin Timberlake and this girl im's me and starts chewing me out for it in the unreadable netspeak. She was like ' don u eva evn tnk abt talkn bout Justin lik that 2 me gain!' I was like GRRR go to school, i'll even pay for them to let you into public school (because by the way she talks you could tell that no one would accept her) Okay, i'm done ranting... and i'm sorry for sounding like a overly-protective/obsessive mom, but yeah... that's just crazy old me.

I don't really think there are many more ones other than that... either i know them or just don't know them if you catch my drift. For instance, i have NO clue as to what 'meeble' means *Sighs* antyone care to explain?

Hey! I started a topic and people replied!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Ugh, I hate it when people do that "I luv 2 tlk" thing. Or any sort of abbrievation that's like that. But I love the little ** things. *grins* See?
happy_daze
Omigosh...I have friends who do that when I speak to them online, and I have no clue as to what their saying! It's so pointless!!! I actually replied to them by saying "Can you type in English please?"

Wow, it just squicks me a lot. A real turn off tongue.gif

But I tend to use the little things like btw, lol, gtg...and that's it. Not really confusing stuff like:

QUOTE
wachu doin? payce! aiightz. u cumin' to tha ...

*twitch* blink.gif Er-lack!

happy w00t.gif
Kaykos
*sighs* Happy_Daze i know exactly what you mean... that's why i tend to put up my away message whenever i'm online. Of course i'll come back and reply when someome who knows how to type says hello happy.gif

MalfoyMyFerret Oh yeah, i love those little things too... *(insert w/e word)* They are so cute, i use them a lot. I mean heck, look at any of my posts and i'm almost sure every one has at least two of those things >_<

btw, lol, brb, ttyl, and gtg are all okay... i don't mind those (i mean heck, at least i can read them) You know?

Er- yeah, anyone willng to explain what meeble means?

heart.gif Nicole
sky_is_blue
*nods* All my friends do that online. It annoys the hell out of me. Sometimes I sit there trying to decipher what they said for--oh, five minutes or so. And the conversations tend to start out the same way every time.
Friend: Hey
Me: Hey!
Friend: 'Wazz up?!' or 'Wat's up?' or 'Wat's ^'...you get the point
Me: Nothing
Friend: Wanna go 2 d moo-v's?
Me: Er...I dunno...
Friend: Pleez?
Me: Hold on...
Friend: Pleez cum.
*cackles* Yup, that's my friend. And she's grown so accustomed to it that she writes, ' U r going to cum to the movies wit me.' she said.', in school essays or creative stories etc. So of course I snort at the weirdness of it all. *shudders* Really annoying.
magical mischief maker
Yes, its very annoying and it happens most of the time in Chatrooms. it really pisses me when 18-year-old, college-students try to speak as if they are entering kindergarden. Some people render this "U wan tlk2 m" as Internet speech which is totally wrong. I wont say that those people who use this type of "speech" dont know how to speak English, but because they have seen so many other people speak that way they have become accustomed to it.
And if ever i read such type of talk in any fic i always send the author a haughty review and flamer.. blushing.gif (looks towards Kaykos, I was wrong.)
XxKkAnGxX
Yea..It Gets Annoying When People(few of my friends..)Talk Like That All The Time...I Use.."Dunno" "Wanna" "U" Because It Is Easier[?] To Type Of I Can Do It Without Having To Type Want To Or Dont know Or You...(Well...You Is Not A Problem...Just A Habit..As The Rest Of These) It Doesnt Particularly Bother ME That Much Until Its Impossible To Read What They Are SAying..But Thats Just Me...Some People Get More Annoyed At Those Things Then Others...It Just Doesnt Bother Me As Much...

I'll have to agree with everyone here: I really hate Net lingo. I can decipher most of them, but it's irritating especially when you're a citizen in my country - because not going to school is a crime. wink.gif *sigh* It puts the teachers to shame whenever they see their students type like that...Thankfully, not many of my friends use that many of those abbreviations.

MalfoyMyFerret: Well, those ** things are really useful...Better to use those than colons, though the stupid AutoFormat in Microsoft Word always makes anything between the two signs bold...

Meeble? Feeble? Maybe? *sigh* Let's go ask someone who's an expert in internet slang, shall we? rolleyes.gif
Kaykos
*looks at MagicalMischiefMaker* Tisk tisk... you told me you didn't flame anyone. Only joking biggrin.gif I can understand where you're coming from with the whole flaming thing. I usually just go ahead, tell them it's a good story but they need to improve their spelling and grammar. Oh well that's just silly old me.

Oh if my friends write like that in school i give them a good thwaping with one of my notebooks. I badger them to no end until they go ahead and change it. Stubborn mules they are... they never change it untill i rant so hard my face turns blue. Ah well, that's just KY for you.

I hate it when you just meet people and they type like that. Like if you went to the movies, saw this guy (in my case) gave him my s/n and then he im's me saying:

Him- Yo wz ^?
me- *growls* learn how to spell and then i'll talk to you *hits block button*

And i seriously do block them all. *sighs* i must sound really drastic to you all but i'm pretty stuck in the idea that you should use what you learn... anyone agree?

Chatspeak drives me nuts. Why can't these people write in english? The ones that are fairly standard are okay, but these people take it way to far. I was in a chat room a few minutes ago and someone wrote

"btw aone k 2b h" If someone could tell me what that means it would be greatly appreciated. I hate feeling stupid. dry.gif
Kaykos
QUOTE
btw aone k 2b h
GAH someone actually said that? *faints onto the floor* I can't decipher it any better than you... sorry! Maybe it means-

I don't know how to speak real english, anyone care to help?

*nods* i think that's what it meant *chortles* Well i must be off... sorry i wasn't much of a help mogliecat, nice name by the way happy.gif

Whoa...all I got from that quote is:

QUOTE
btw aone k 2b h

btw= by the way

aone= anyone *i'm assuming that's what they meant*

k= er...

2b= to be...?

h=a typo?

Seriously, whoever typed that in that chat room you went to probably doesn't know how to type properly, first of all, or doesn't care about using the English language properly! *bleah* tongue.gif

*cackles* Oh, wow.

Much like Kaykos' interpretation, it means something like this:
I'm a stupid, idiotic dolt who has never stepped foot in school! See my I'm-dumber-than-belly-button-lint expression? Note the drool that is hanging from my mouth. Now pelt tomatoes at me and tell me just how stupid I am! Oh, anyone have an extra brain?

*shakes head*

I don't use chatrooms very much now but I used to use some. I never found the netspeak to be a problem but that is probably because I ignore it for the most part. The only time I get around to figuring it out is when it is over used like schnoogle and glomp, two things that are easy to figure out, for me at least.
Then again I have a head start on this because my sister makes up her own words. rolleyes.gif

I've always thought that meeble was a type of whimper. *shrugs*
Krisi
Urg! Chatroom speak, or text speak. *feels squicked* I'm all for saving space on a text message, abbreviating words like 'you' (u) and 'are' ® and 'to' to 2 but when it gets so plain confusing - argh!!!!

I've always assosiated meeble with a word you use when you are scared or cornered or something. Or when you are squicked.
Kaykos
lol thanks everyone for explaining 'meeble' to me *glomps all*

Sky_is_Blue, i rather liked your translation of the whole 'btw aone k 2b h' I really don't know how you could translate it otherwise. *probes brain* Thinking seriously, this is all i could come up with...

btw - By the way
aone - Anyone (maybe?)
k - okay
2b - To be
h - Home (?)

*grumbles* Well that makes no sence either.... *walks off kicking a random stick muttering how she's about to get her BeatCho!Stick out and thwap anyone who ever uses net speak like that again*

heart.gif Nicole
NAPPA
Schnoogle. It's a nice word smile.gif I like it.
Glomp - contrary to the popular belief FAP did not invent this. It's been around a while. It's used a lot in the Ranma fanfics. happy.gif That's why I know of it.

Love the discussion here. Does anyone have a real hatred for sites that have these types of writings? I've come across gaming sites like that. My first reactions was... why did they bother put up all that, if it's in leet (elite) or l33t speak. Thats the proper name for that kind of talk - anywho..

NAPPA
Lady Aeryn
'Proper name'? That's rich. tongue.gif

I really can't stand chatspeak - if you're chatting with someone who types like that, at least it gives your brain a tiny workout trying to interpret what they're saying, though. wink.gif The occasional abbreviations (BTW, IMO, WTF, LOL, etc.) I don't mind... but abbreviating almost *every* other word? *shakes head* Drives me batty. angry.gif

'Glomp' and 'schnoogle' I pretty much knew what they meant (I love those words too) - but there's a new one I'm not that sure on: 't00by'... ?? I see it used more on FAP lately.
akscully
I believe t00b means idiot or dork. Or stupid. Actually, I think it's kind of all of them mixed together. It's not an insult, more like a gentle jab. Lori used it to describe H/Hr in PoU. Napoleon called H/Hr a "grand t00by love affair" or something along those lines.

A-ha! Just found a post from the PoU list:
QUOTE
A t00b, by the way, for the person who asked, is a fandom invention,
a gently mocking, very affectionate term for someone who is being
silly, or dorky, or in some other way t00by. smile.gif

and, from Lori herself:
QUOTE
"T00b" is a hacker term that's been appropriated by the HP fandom.
It's the most useful term in the world. It can be a verb, an
adjective, a noun, whatever. Some common usages follow:

"I'm just going to t00b around on my day off."
"What a t00by thing to say."
"She's being such a t00b!"
"Hey, what's up, t00b?"
"I spent my vacation just t00bing around Columbus."

As to what it means? Well, it varies with how you use it. Generally
and most commonly, it can mean sort of "dopey" or "silly" or "goofy"
or whatever, as in sentences 2 and 3 above. It's also useful as a
term of endearment, as in the fourth example. "To t00b around"
generally means to do nothing much.

So there you go. smile.gif

On chatspeak: Aside from some commonly accepted abbreviations (LOL, IMO, WTF), chatspeak drives me nuts and is a quick way to get blocked from any of my friend lists. You'll get a warning, but after that--goodbye! Ick, ick, ick. Cannot stand chatspeak.
James
It depends what level your dealing with... I don't use netspeak at all in anything I say, but some people do, and I don't have a problem with that. The one time I do find anoying is when somebody decides to invent a term and then expect the rest of the world to also know the meaning of the word. I'm sure words such as "btw" begun like this somewhere, but its most anoying to have to decipher somebody's language that they have decided to invent.

Text messages tend to be almost written in code, with a lot of invented netspeak. Its most difficult to ask somebody what they meant by their last text message, considering that it means you need to write another message, and you have to hope that in your new message you don't use a term that they don't understand.

IMO? That's a new one? what does this mean?
Carla
If you think chatspeak is bad in english, you should see how it is in SPANISH. Horrible, horrible I tell you... They have this awful habit of writing any c's or q's as k's, for no reason whatsoever but their (very weird if I may add) sense of aesthetics. At least english-speaking chatspeak has a purpose, that is, to shorten words... changing random letters to k's makes no sense, then. Suddenly, "xp" means hello (at least it does in my country). And when they start mixing chatspeak-english and spanish, I can't really undestand a WORD of what they're saying. And the worst part is that everyone talks like that too! I admit sometimes I use some of those words, but really, use them all the time? Some chatspeak is ok (I personally love "dunno" and "luv"), like the ones some of you have mentioned, and I certainly like the **'s a lot, but some people really abuse... that's why I usually don't chat, AOL or MSN at all. And it really irks me when I find written things with those wannabe-words.

*sigh*

Carla.

IMO=in my opinion, and IMHO=in my humble opinion

Can't remember how I ever learned that, but that's about as far as my chatspeak goes. I HATE it, hate it, hate it. My friends use it sometimes, just to spite me.

And now I've gotten into the habit of using it. blush.gif LOL, BRB, G2G, that stuff...come on, you know it's easier, even if it is totally lame. Think about it. You'd rather type LotR than Lord of the Rings 80 thousand times, wouldn't you? And in a case where you really had to leave quick, you're not going to type out a whole long goodbye.

I'm such a hypocrite.

But seriously... ROTFLMAO and t/y and h/o and all that... My friends seem to invent a new abbreviation every week and it's insane trying to keep up with it. And really, wHaT Is wItH PeOpLe TyPiNg lIkE tHiS? It totally gets on my nerves. And different spellings that are just as long as the actual word! i.e., kewl=cool/skewl=school, frendz=friends... People using 'z' for anything that ends in 's' or 'k' for things that should be 'c' (musik). Okay, sorry, now that I thought of one, eighty million more things are coming to me.

I'll stop now, I g2g so ttyl ok c ya later bye byez luv ya lotz
