I have to stop this, twenty year-old Hermione Granger thought to herself as she lay on her couch with a picture in her hands. Her eyes were full of tears and she was holding the picture close to her. I’m not a little girl anymore! This isn’t Hogwarts and I have to remember that. I have to remember that this is the REAL WORLD!
The picture that she held so dear to her and had cried over for the past three years was of her and her best friend, Harry Potter.
She had not seen or heard from him since that horrible day when they had to leave Hogwarts forever. He had not visited, called, or even written a letter to her in those miserable three years. Every night she lay on her couch by the fire, stared at the beloved portrait of her beloved friend, and cried herself to sleep. She had done this for three long and excruciating years.
She never really knew why she tortured herself like this. Maybe she thought that one day he would return to her and hold her in his arms. She knew she was being foolish. He had probably gotten a good job and forgotten all about her, and here she was, Hermione Granger, the girl who used to be so happy with all of her friends, now an adult, all alone, crying her eyes out over a a silly little photograph from three years ago.
So, obviously, tonight was no different.
Hermione had finished her dinner, taken the portrait and sat down on the couch with it and a glass of wine. Her schedule never changed. She always finished dinner, fixed up an alcoholic drink, and sat on the couch, ready to drink and cry.
She wondered if he even thought about her. He had not told her what he had planned to do very much. Once or twice Harry had told Hermione and his other best friend, Ron Weasley, that he wanted to become an Auror at the Ministry of Magic.
Hermione had also figured the possibility of Harry and Ron becoming professional Quidditch players. In the good old days back at Hogwarts, Harry had played Seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch team and Ron had played Keeper. Hermione had actually wanted to be a Chaser in their seventh year, but she had never gotten around to signing up for it.
Maybe if I had remembered to sign up for the position of Chaser, then I wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t be getting myself drunk on wine and crying over a stupid picture! Hermione thought to herself.
So tonight, she took her drink and picture and sat on the couch. She finished her drink and, by that time, was crying. She felt like such a baby, but she had always thought the same thing every night for the past three years: How could you leave me alone like that? I need you more than anything! Help me! I need you, Harry!
So when she finally dozed off, the picture slid out of her hands and fell on the floor.
She then had a weird dream. Hermione dreamed that she was on a broomstick and was about to fall off when a hand behind her grabbed her and pulled her back up.
She turned around and she then saw him; Harry Potter was sitting on the broom with her. She could feel his warm breath on her neck. She felt his body press against hers. Her chocolate-brown eyes met his emerald green ones and she heard his sweet and passionate voice say softly in her ear, “Don’t worry, Hermione. I’ve got you. I’ll never let you go.”
She turned around and her lips passionately touched themselves against his. Hermione could actually feel his kiss and she never wanted him to let her go...
BUZZZZZZZZ!
The alarm clock went off and she woke up, startled. There was one odd thing about Hermione’s nightly schedule. Every night she fell asleep on the couch, but the next morning, she would find herself waking up in her bed.
Oh, well. Time to go to work!
Hermione had gotten a job two years ago as a bookkeeper at Flourish and Blotts bookstore on Diagon Alley.
When she got to work, she immediately started organizing the books on the shelf.
Suddenly, her boss, Mrs. Owens, poked her head out of the manager’s office. “Miss Granger, could I talk to you for a minute?” she said

Hermione made her way to the manager's office right away.
"Come in dear," Mrs. Owens warm voice invited her in. "This letter came in this morning. I was wondering why it came here instead of your home," she added.
This is my home, with all these books, Hermione thought to herself.
Mrs. Owens gave her the letter.
Hermione saw the Hogwart's Seal and hastely opened the letter.
Dear Ms. Granger,
We are inviting you to a very private gathering in the Hogwarts Premises on the 31st of July. Along with this letter is a slip of old thread that you should tie on your finger and will serve as a Portkey on the day of the invitation. We are all eager to see you. We are waiting for your quick reply.
Sincerely,
Albus Dumbledore
Hogwart's Headmaster
A smile broke into Hermione's face.

"What is it Hermione?" Mrs. Owen asked seeing Hermione's smile
"Um...Nothing. Just a letter froman old friend."
"Ah. Close friend?"
"
No, not really, but I need tomorrow off," Hermione said, hoping her boss would agree.
"It's a bit short notice, but since it's you, okay."
"Thank you!" Hermione said happily. "I'll make my hours up, I promise."
"Oh I wouldn't hear of it dear! You have tomorrow off as a thank you for helping me sort this place out."
"Are you sure? I mean, I could-"
"I'm positive. Now make sure you stay this happy. It's the happiest I've seen you in a long time," Mrs. Owen said fondly.
Visions of Harry popped into Hermione's mind.
She had to close her eyes to prevent her salty tears falling down her face.
Well, being happy didn't last long did it? She thought concentrating on not letting her emotions take hold of her again.
"Hermione?" Mrs. Owen asked concerned "Are you okay?"
"
Fine." She choked out, looking away and hiding her face.
"Hermione... Are you crying?"
"No," She lied.
"C'mere." Mrs. Owen wrapped her arms around Hermione's small figure as Hermione let everything out....again.
This is getting silly, she thought while she cried.

"Hermione, dear. What's wrong?" Mrs. Owens asked nervously.
Hermione sniffled, feeling another wave of sadness swarm her. "It's just--I'm just being silly."
Mrs. Owens held the sobbing woman at arms length and eyed her skeptically. "I've never said anything before, Hermione, since you've always been like this...but maybe you should look into therapy."
Hermione was taken aback, and gave her employer a puzzled look. "I appreciate the fact that you care, but really...I'm fine."
"There's no use in trying to hide it, Miss Granger. Something is upsetting you, and you haven't got anyone to talk about it with?" Mrs. Owens confirmed.
Hermione stared at her. "This is a personal issue--"
"Is it a man?" Mrs. Owens interrupted, and Hermione's thoughts instinctively traveled to the photo of Harry.
"No."
"Oh...a woman?" Mrs Owens guessed again.
"No.... Listen, I'll sort it all out on my day off. Is that okay?" Hermione tried, wiping her eyes and gathering her composure.
Mrs Owens looked her over once more. "Fine, but I don't want any sobbing when you get back."
Hermione opened her mouth to say 'It's a deal,' but felt as if she'd be lying. Instead she slipped a small, "Okay," as she slipped out of the office.
She began to stock books again and kept sneaking thoughts of that Godforesaken picture. Maybe Dumbledore knows something about Harry... She let herself think guiltily. She glanced up at the clock. It was time for a break, and Hermione was glad too, because she needed to go somewhere else if she was to have another good cry.

Even though she was supposed to be focused on books, Hermione was finding it extremely difficult to concentrate on anything but the reunion letter.
I hope that Harry will be there! I really need to see him again! she thought.
The bell rang and when Hermione saw who had come in, she had to stop herself from squealing with delight; Ron Weasley had just walked in the door.
"Hermione?" he said. "Is it really you?"
"Yeah, it's me. See what I've gotten as a job?" she replied, gesturing to the shop.
"It's not that bad," replied Ron.
"What are you doing here?" she asked. "Did you come for a book?"
"Yeah, I did." Ron replied. "I was wondering if you had that book you wrote back in 6th year. The True Harry Potter."
"Why do you want that book?" she asked.
"Because I never read it. I thought it would be good to see what Harry's done in his life. After all, nobody knows Harry Potter better than you, Hermione."
"That's not exactly true, Ron, because if I knew everything about Harry, then I would know where he is now. I have not seen or heard from him in three years!"
"Do you have the book?" Ron asked, seeing that tears were starting to slide down Hermione's cheeks. "Maybe now isn't a good time to talk about Harry."
"Yeah, we have it." Hermione replied, quickly wiping away her tears and turning towards the shelf to find the book.
"Hermione, you do know that he's coming to the reunion, right?"
Just as she had grabbed the book, she spun around at his words. "He is? How do you know?"
"Because he told me on the fellytone."
"Telephone!"
"Oh yeah!"
"Wait, wait, wait! You've been communicating with Harry?" Hermione demanded.
"Yeah, he and I play for the United Kingdom Quidditch Team. He's the best and youngest Seeker that the U.K. team ever had. I play Keeper, by the way. They said I was the youngest Keeper the team ever had."
"WHY WASN'T I INFORMED ON ANY OF THIS?" Hermione yelled angrily. "YOU AND HARRY TAKE OFF TO PLAY QUIDDITCH AND LEAVE ME ALL ALONE FOR THREE YEARS WITHOUT SO MUCH AS OWLING ME ONCE!"
Ron was taken aback, for he had no idea that Hermione had suffered this much over the past three years.
Hermione couldn't believe that she was bursting out like this at her friend, especially in hearing range of her boss, but she didn't care. She was so furious at Ron and Harry right now that she didn't care about anything.
However, Mrs. Owens did. She opened the door and came out of her office, saying, "Miss Granger, what is all the yelling about?"
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Owens. It's just a small problem that-"
"I don't care, Miss Granger. You know it's against the rules to yell at your customers!"
"Mrs. Owens, I'm sorry. It'll never-"
"Hermione, I have an idea. What if I give you the rest of the day off?"
"Why?"
"Because of two reasons. One, you have really been upset lately, and two, I think you deserve it."
"Thank you, Mrs. Owens."
Hermione finished up what she had to do, grabbed her hat, and headed out of the shop.
"What was THAT about?" said a voice. Hermione looked to the left. Standing right under the sign was Ron.
"I have one request, Ron." she said firmly.
"Which is?" said Ron.
"I WANT TO SEE HARRY!" she snapped.
"Why are you so desperate to see Harry?" said Ron.
"Do you know what I've done every single night for three years?"
"No. I don't."
"I've sat on my couch and cried myself to sleep over Harry every night for THREE YEARS!"

"And why have you been doing that all these years?" Ron asked.
"I can't believe you had to ask me that question. He was gone for the longest time. Well, you were gone too. Neither one of you have even tried to contact me. See if I'm still alive," she burst out again. "I thought I lost Harry, I thought I lost him and I have shut myself here with all these books."
"I know we're wrong leaving you off getting on with our own lives and forgetting about you. I know we've been selfish. I have only seen Harry this season. I was surprised as you are when we saw each other for the first time. I'm really sorry Hermione but we can pick up the pieces and be the best friends we were before. You just don't know how Harry has been talking about meeting you again," said Ron as he tried to comfort his best friend.
"He wanted to see me too?" Hermione asked as dried away her tears. He wanted to see her too and she felt a tinge of happiness. She longed for him for the longest time and finally she'd see him again.
She smiled at her red-head best friend.

"Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go!" she said excitedly.
"Okay, but Hermione, it doesn't start for another 3 hours..." Ron said slowly, as if wondering if his best friend had changed so much no one would recognize her.
"Oh. Well, we can always talk to Dumbledore. Didn't you say Harry's coming?" she reminded him. "I would kind of like to see him as soon as possible, since it hasn't been possible in the last three years."
She saw Ron roll his eyes but didn't care. Tonight, she would be seeing Harry, and why not get there early so as to see him more? What's the harm in that, anyway?
"Fine. I give up. Where is it again?"
"Oh, Ron." she said, and told him exactly how to Apparate there. She remembered back in their seventh, and last, year together he had had a lot of trouble Apparating correctly.
"Well--here goes nothing." she said as she and Ron Apparated to the reunion.
"Hello, Ms. Granger and Mr. Weasley. I wasn't expecting you for three more hours. However, I would be glad to let you stay and help set up." Dumbledore, wizard genius, greeted them. They nodded and set right to work.
Somehow, the thought of seeing Harry kept the work less tedius and more interesting.
Suddenly, a small pop, like the kind wizards made when Apparating, issued from behind her.

Harry had just arrived. "Hermione! Ron! I'm here!"
They turned and saw him, grinning at them; Hermione couldn't help but run and hug him, and she just reached him, Harry hugged her too, and whispered in her ear. "You don't know how long I was desiring to see you!"
Ron smiled, then he went to them, and all together continued the work...
After some time, Ron had to exit the room, and Harry said her. "You know, in those three years, I was trying to avoid you for one precise reason, that now I want to explain you..."

Harry, I-"
"No, Hermione. Don't say anything. You can scream at me, attack me, do anything you wish, but I must have my say first."
Hermione knew it was no use to argue, so she nodded in agreement and remained silent.
"Believe me, Hermione, if I had had a choice about it, I would've picked the choice where we could be together, but I didn't have a choice."
"WHY?" Hermione suddenly burst out. "Why didn't you have a choice? Why couldn't you have stayed here with me?"
"Because, Hermione," Harry replied, looking more serious. "Staying with you would've cost me the one thing I would never let myself lose: your life."
Hermione stared up at her friend and realized he was about to tell her something VERY important!
