This area is for finding a SPECIFIC story that you've read previously AND has strong hints of a Harry/Hermione pairing and ending. If your fic doesn't have these elements, then you'd have to post in the other section. General searches (ie, Please recommend any H/H fanfic that has this plot...) should be put in the Broad Searches for H/H fics area.
If you could find time to make a new thread here, then you could find time to read these POINTERS and rules, esp. the one for ACKNOWLEDGING EVERY REPLY. Posts that don't follow these rules would be moved or locked. Here's how to find moved posts.
MOD NOTE 21May2008: We've noticed that plenty of PK-ers have been looking for "Reprieve". Its plot's described on other posts in that linked thread.

Proven Techniques
to Hunt for Fanfics

EDITED Feb 9 2009
borrowing or revising inputs given over the years by the Fic Hunting Mods:
Another, gal-texter, Justine, NAPPA, sinta, Thieving Magpie and tonti

If you're looking for a specific Potter fanfic that you've read before, this page tells you how to look for it.

If your search is of the general type, (ie, Please recommend ANY HP fic that has this plotline or story element ...) then you should post them in our Broad Searches sub-forums for H/H, L/J, D/G, R/LL or Portkey-neutral stories.

However, you'd save yourself and our PK-mates a lot of trouble if you do the following BEFORE making a new thread here or anywhere else:
.
.
.
  • If you know the story's title or the author's name, try googling for it as follows:

-- It would help if you put part of the title in quotation marks and to combine that phrase with Hermione (or another uniquely named HP character who'd likely appear in the story). Say, if you could only remember that the fic was named something like "worst holiday", then enter the phrase "worst holiday" hermione in Google's search box.

-- You could also narrow down your Google search by doing this and this (the part that starts with The trick is ...).

-- If the above Google search doesn't help, search for the fic title or author in Portkey's fic recommendations database (fic rec-engine). Then read its Link to discussion forum thread (in the rec-engine's popup window). If there are no posts about the current whereabouts of the story, you may post "does anyone have a copy of this story" on that thread. That's where other readers of that fic would most likely see your message, although it would take time for others to see your request.

  • If you don't know the title or author's pen name, or could only guess at either, then:

-- Enter helpful keywords or phrases in PK's Filter for the fanfic archive and Google's advanced search! You'd get the same Google results by doing these steps.

-- Next, do this step to search in the Fics Recs forum. Also take a look at the Broad Searches subforums.

-- Browse over the threads in the Found forum, which contains past threads of successfully found stories that were once lost.

-- If it's a Portkey fanfic and you've left a signed review for it, try looking for it in your Review History. Log in http://users.portkey.org/ then look at User Panel on the top left > Review History link.

  • If the above methods give you a URL for the story or author's page but the story seems to be offline, enter that URL in archive.org as explained here.

  • If none of the above helps you, then that's when you can make a new topic in this Lost forum! Read this!
.
You DON'T have to read the next posts as they've already been linked at various points above.

Thanks for this Gal-texter. Can I just add that if you click on Advanced Search in Google you can restrict the search to one fan fiction site. e.g.
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=he...&as_qdr=all

This has the advantage of searching the story text as well as the summary.

EDIT JULY 17 2008:
Try this too, this one limits the search to fanfiction.portkey.org, ie, Portkey's fanfiction archive.

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=si...&as_qdr=all

Oh, thanks vm for that tip! I'm not very well-versed with Google's advanced features myself. smile.gif

EDIT: I'll make a note about this soon in the box on the top of these "lost fic" forums.

IGNORE THESE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

ABOUT ACKNOWLEDGING EVERY REPLY:

QUOTE(gal-texter @ May 10 2008, 09:34 PM) *
Make sure to post after EVERY reply, to show your appreciation that the respondent took the time to help you out. Let them and the forum mods know whether your fic has been successfully found or not.

There are quite a few people who don't do this. Some register purposely to post a "fic hunt" thread, but don't bother to acknowledge the reply made. This makes me seriously consider restricting this forum to PK regulars.

PUTTING STORY DETAILS IN YOUR THREAD'S TITLE FIELDS:

QUOTE(gal-texter @ May 10 2008, 09:34 PM) *
Provide as many unique details as possible in your thread's titles and subtitles field. Remember that there are plenty of threads vying for our PK-mates' attention.

Lemme show you what I mean. You fic hunters are relying on other Portkeyers' help, right? Which of the following would catch their eye? Click the following thumbnails:

Attached Image <-- generic topic titles VS detailed topic titles --> Attached Image

Both images are actual PK fic hunt threads. The left one shows the original topic titles posted by the fic hunters. The right image shows some topics (not necessarily the same ones on the left image) after I've edited their titles.

QUOTE(old tip)
Enter keywords in the "Search Forum" box found either on top or near the bottom of the Fic Recs forums, as well as the Ficlets and Challenges subforums in Portkey's shipping boards.

I'm changing that to:

Many "found fic" threads have been merged with their matching threads in the Fic Recs forums. Therefore, try searching in there.

-- Use the board's search engine by entering unique keywords.

News dead missing are more helpful keywords than

Harry thinks Hermione's dead; she went missing; the story starts with her looking over news articles about Harry.

Why is the former search phrase better? Because every H/H fic rec thread will contain the words "Harry" and "Hermione", therefore you'll get all those rec threads if you put their names in your search. Instead, try entering News dead missing in that link to the search engine. It'll give you a very manageable number of H/H fic rec threads to go over.

-- Try sorting the fic rec threads by number of replies, in descending order. Here's how. The more replies in a rec thread, the more likely those replies had originally been posted here as "lost fic" searches.

-- The engine's default setting is to Show results as topics, ie, threads. That above link automatically searches in the H/H Fic Recs forum and its child forums. To search in other forums, simply change the forum in the engine's Search Where box.

-- You can also use the search engine for stories you've read in the "Found Fics" or our ships' "Ficlets" or "Challenges" sections. The latter are linked in the "Other writing & fanfic forums" described in here. Read this for an actual example.

Hi! Call me Haley. :)

Hey there,

You're probably taking about A Year To Remember by MarianLibrarian.

For future reference, Portkey has a really great search engine (Search/filter on the main fanfiction page) where you can type in words found in the title, summary, or author... In this case, you could have typed in 'A Walk To Remember' in the Story Summary box, and found this result.

Not that I mind helping you out, of course, but it's something to remember next time. ^^

*has edited title* For the second or third time, don't use vague words like "I can't remember" or "lost H/H fic" in your topic titles here. Click the screencaps here to see why I dislike vague topic titles.

VipyGirl gave a good pointer. Here's another one: google for site:fanfiction.portkey.org "A Walk to Remember" and you'll get these results.

Those search keywords instruct google to look for pages it had copied from PK's fanfic side, with all copies containing the exact phrase A Walk to Remember. <-- Enclosing this in quotation marks (inside the google box) ensure that the results will include this exact wording.

If the Google links no longer work, look for its cached copies by clicking on the words Cached in that google search results page. Once you find out the story title or author name, you can use our fic recs engine and Google to track the fic down. If you get the story's URL, enter it archive.org (aka Wayback) to look for its copies of that URL's webpage.

You oughta know the drill by now: you need to reply here to acknowledge every attempt made to assist you.
